Overview

The Buon Vino Super Jet Wine Filter is a device designed for home winemakers to filter wine, improving its clarity and sparkle. It is owned by the Wines and Steins club, and users are required to read this manual and view two videos before borrowing it.

Function Description:

The Buon Vino Super Jet Wine Filter pumps fluid from one container, through three filter pads, and into another container. It is specifically designed for home winemakers who filter more than 10 gallons of wine at a time. The built-in Flojet pump can also be used to rack wine from one container to another by bypassing the filter pads. Filtration is the final step in winemaking, aiming to remove particulate (micron-sized solids) from the wine. As the filter pads retain more particulate, their porosity diminishes. The device is designed to handle various stages of filtration, from coarse to fine, using different grades of filter pads.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power: Standard 110V, drawing 0.5 amps.
  • Filter Pads: Uses specific Buon Vino Super Jet Filter Pads:
    • 8.0 Micron (#1) Blue: Coarse pads for heavy wines, collecting large particles.
    • 5.0 Micron (#2) White: Finer pads for brightening and polishing.
    • 2.0 Micron (#3) Green: Finest pads for further enhancement and yeast removal (up to 80%), recommended after #2 pads.
  • Hose Lengths:
    • Input side: 8 feet of 1/2" ID tubing with a sediment tip.
    • Output side: 4 feet of 1/2" ID tubing with a hook for hanging to the side of the carboy.
  • Pressure Gauge: Built-in to indicate when filter pads need replacement.
  • Pressure Limit: Has a 35 PSI limit, beyond which it will reduce flow.
  • Draw Hose Max: 8 feet.
  • Push Side Max: 30-35 feet.

Usage Features:

  • Filter Pad Insertion: The coarse side of all three types of pads must always face towards the motor.
  • Preparation: Wine must be racked or decanted at least once before filtering.
  • Hose Connection:
    1. Insert the clear hose with the short white plastic end piece (drainage tube, No. 1) into fitting A.
    2. Insert the clear hose with the red anti-sediment tip (intake hose, No. 2) into fitting B on the pump.
  • Clamps: Two white clamps on the frame next to the motor must be detached and placed on the fittings to prevent air intake or leakage. Pliers may be used to tighten them.
  • Filter Body Assembly:
    1. Loosen the filter body screw (No. 3) and remove the steel concave cover plate and the first three plastic filtering plates.
    2. Soak filter pads in clean water for approximately 1 minute, ensuring they are saturated on both sides and not bunched together.
    3. Insert pads one by one, ensuring the coarse side faces the motor and holes align with the plastic plates.
    4. Insert plastic plates, aligning the half-moon on the top part.
    5. Place the steel concave plate last, ensuring all four half-moons are in a straight line and pads are square to the plastic plates.
    6. Tighten the filter body screw well for an airtight closing.
  • Filtering Process:
    1. Insert the intake tube (No. 2) into the wine to be filtered.
    2. Place the drainage tube (No. 1) into a clean container for filtered wine.
    3. A small drip tray is included under the filtering area to collect minor leakage.
    4. Important: The first liquid from the drainage tube will be water from the pads; discard this before collecting filtered wine.
  • Filter Pad Selection:
    • #1 pads (coarse) are for heavy wines and large particles.
    • #2 pads (finer) are for brightening and polishing.
    • #3 pads (finest) are for further enhancement and yeast removal, to be used after #2 pads.
    • All pads are single-use and non-reusable.
  • Gauge Directions:
    • For #1 and #2 pads, check PSI periodically. Turn off motor and change pads when PSI reaches 18-20.
    • For #3 pads, do not exceed a differential pressure of 10 PSI. Calculate by allowing 2 gallons of wine to flow, noting the stabilized pressure, and adding 10 PSI.
  • Check Valve: Creates self-prime in the pump. May wear out and need replacement.
  • Wine Preparation:
    • Young wine (30 days old) is not ready for fine filtration.
    • If using gelatin or bentonite, ensure they have settled sufficiently to avoid clogging pads.
    • Wine should be properly balanced and stabilized before filtering.
    • For best results, wine should be 2-3 months old and kept in a cool spot prior to filtration. Filter with #2 pads first, then #3 pads after 2-4 days.
    • For young wine (30 days old), use #1 pads first, then #2 pads immediately or after 2-4 days, then #3 pads after 2-4 days.
    • Agitation due to CO2 in young wine is normal; clarity will stabilize within 10-15 minutes.
    • Do not bottle directly from the filter; filter from carboy to carboy and allow wine to rest for a few days before bottling.
  • Filter Pad Pre-treatment (MoreWine suggestion): Run a stock sanitizing solution (potassium metabisulphite and citric acid) through the filter, followed by a cold water rinse.
  • Manufacturer's Suggestion for Pads: Wet pads before inserting, then run a couple of gallons of water through them. Neutralize pads with 1-2 teaspoons of Citric Acid in 2 gallons of water.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning:
    • Remove and discard filter pads.
    • Wash plastic plates with clean water.
    • Dry the steel concave plate.
    • Flush out the pump with 5 gallons (20 liters) of clean water by placing the intake tube in water and running the pump.
  • Lubrication: From time to time, lubricate threads on the filter body screw.
  • Storage: Wipe the frame and steel concave plate well before storing the filter.
  • General Safety:
    • Do not touch hot surfaces.
    • Do not immerse cords, plugs, or portable appliances in water.
    • Close supervision is necessary when used near children.
    • Unplug from outlet when not in use, before putting on/taking off parts, or cleaning.
    • Do not operate with a damaged cord or plug.
    • Do not dismantle the motor; call for service.
    • Do not use outdoors unless specifically intended.
    • Do not let cord hang over edges or touch hot surfaces.
    • Do not place on or near hot gas/electric burner or in a heated oven.
    • Always attach plug and check control is OFF before plugging into wall outlet.
    • Do not use for purposes other than intended.
    • Avoid contacting moving parts.
