Overview

The Burrell Scientific Kup-L-Weld® II Thermocouple Welder (Item #073-077-00-00) is a specialized device designed for welding thermocouple wires. This operating manual provides comprehensive instructions for its setup, operation, and maintenance, ensuring safe and effective use.

Function Description

The Kup-L-Weld® II is used to create strong, clean welds on thermocouple wires, essential for accurate temperature measurement in various applications. It operates by generating an arc between a carbon rod and the twisted ends of thermocouple wires, fusing them together. The device features a "WELD" button that, when depressed, applies voltage to the carbon rod to strike the arc. An adjustable current control allows the operator to fine-tune the welding intensity based on the wire gauge.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Dimensions (H x W x D): 15 x 11 x 12 inches
  • Weight: 12 pounds
  • Voltage: 110-120 VAC
  • Material (metal case): Abrasion- and corrosion-resistant paint
  • Warranty: One year
  • Current Draw: Adjustable from a minimum of 19 amps up to a maximum of 28 amps.
  • Wire Compatibility: Accommodates wire sizes from 14 gauge to 30 gauge, including chromel-alumel, chromel-constantan, copper-constantan, iron-constantan, and platinum-rhodium.

Usage Features

The Kup-L-Weld® II is designed for ease of use and operator safety.

  • Setup: The welder requires connection to a properly wired, 3-prong, grounded outlet capable of supplying 110-120 volts at 30 amperes. It should be set up in a spacious area on a stable, clean, non-slip, dry, and fireproof surface.
  • Welding Process:
    1. Twist together the ends of the thermocouple wire.
    2. Use the alligator clamp holder to grasp the thermocouple wires approximately one inch from the ends to be welded.
    3. Set the "Current Adjustment" control to the appropriate setting (maximum of 10 for most welds, adjustable from 1 to 10 depending on wire gauge). If excessive heat is observed on smaller gauge wires, the control can be turned counter-clockwise for a lower setting.
    4. Press the "WELD" button and strike an arc between the carbon rod and the wires. Voltage is present on the carbon rod only when the "WELD" button is depressed.
  • Safety Features:
    • Flash Protection Viewing Screen: A standard feature for operator safety, though it is not a substitute for proper eye protection. The screen can be locked in position by tightening thumb screws.
    • Weld Point Illumination Bulb: A 115-volt lamp illuminates the carbon rod contact area during welding, enhancing safety by eliminating the need to look over the viewing screen to observe weld contact. The lamp can be replaced by removing the lamp shield.
    • Required PPE: Safety goggles or glasses are mandatory when operating the welder, despite other safety features.
  • Borax Flux (Optional): Borax flux can be used to facilitate welding.
    • Application: Dip wire ends in water then flux, or heat wire ends momentarily with the carbon rod while gripping them in the pen-style alligator clamp holder and pressing the "WELD" button.
    • Storage: The flux cup surrounding the carbon electrode provides a convenient storage location for borax flux.
    • Caution: Fumes will result from borax flux; consult the manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of the Kup-L-Weld® II.

  • Cleaning:
    • Do not allow moisture to enter the unit.
    • The welder must not be immersed in cleaning agents.
    • Spot clean only.
  • Storage: When not in use, switch the welder to the OFF position and store it in a dry, clean, and stable place at room temperature. For shipping or service, clean the welder and place it in its original packaging carton.
  • Changing the Carbon Electrode:
    1. Disconnect the Kup-L-Weld® from the power source.
    2. Loosen the Flux Cup screw and lift the Flux Cup, being careful not to stretch connecting wires.
    3. Loosen the set screw with an Allen Wrench on the Flux Cup and remove the Flux Cup.
    4. Loosen the bolt from the copper clamp holding the Carbon and remove the Carbon.
    5. To re-install, reverse these procedures.
