Do you have a question about the Bushnell Bone Collector LBC1000 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Bushnell® Bone Collector™ 1000 is an ultra-compact, premium laser rangefinder designed for precise distance measurements, utilizing the latest digital technology. It provides accurate range readings from 5 to 1000 yards (5 to 914.4 meters) with a +/- 1 yard accuracy. This device is suitable for various outdoor activities, including hunting and target shooting, offering features that enhance user experience and measurement reliability.

Function Description

The Bone Collector™ 1000 operates by emitting invisible, eye-safe infrared energy pulses. A sophisticated digital microprocessor instantaneously calculates distances by measuring the time it takes for each pulse to travel from the rangefinder to the target and back. This ensures fast and consistent response and readings. The rangefinder incorporates Bushnell's patented ARC™ (Angle Range Compensation with Ballistics Intelligence) technology, which provides true horizontal distance measurements by compensating for uphill and downhill angles. This feature is particularly useful for hunters, as it helps determine the actual shooting distance, not just the line-of-sight distance. The device also features a vivid LCD with higher light transmission, improving visibility in various lighting conditions, and is built with water-resistant (IPX4) construction for durability in outdoor environments.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Laser Classification: Class 1 laser product in accordance with IEC 60825-1:2007. Complies with 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11 except for conformance with IEC 60825-1 Ed. 3., as described in Laser Notice No. 56, dated May 8, 2019.

Usage Features

To activate the device, press the Power/Fire button once. The display will show the battery level indicator, aiming circle/dot, and other relevant icons. If the display appears blurry, the rubber eyecup/diopter adjustment can be rotated to achieve a sharp image. To measure distance, place the aiming circle on a target at least 5-6 yards away and press and hold the Fire button. The range reading will be displayed below the aiming circle. Once a range is acquired, the Fire button can be released. The crosshairs outside the aiming circle will disappear, indicating the laser is no longer transmitting. The display will remain on for 30 seconds, showing the last distance measurement, before automatically switching off to conserve battery life. For continuous updated range readings, the scan mode can be activated by holding down the Fire button and sweeping the rangefinder across multiple targets. The crosshairs will flash to indicate scan operation.

The device offers Angle Range Compensation (ARC) with Ballistics Intelligence, which calculates the true horizontal distance to a target, especially when shooting at uphill or downhill angles. For example, if a target is 32 yards away at a -52° angle, the line-of-sight distance is 32 yards, but the true horizontal distance (compensated for the angle) would be 20 yards. This feature is crucial for accurate shot placement in varied terrain.

Users can select their preferred distance units (Yards, Meters, or Feet) through the Setup Menu. While the unit is off, pressing and holding the Power/Fire button enters the Setup Menu. The current unit will flash, and holding the button for three seconds will cycle through the available options. Releasing the button confirms the selection.

The display indicators include:

  1. Battery Level Indicator: Shows the remaining battery charge (Full, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4). A blinking icon indicates the battery needs replacement.
  2. Aiming Circle/Dot: The central reticle used for targeting.
  3. Active/Scan Laser Indicator: Indicates when the laser is active or in scan mode.
  4. Primary Numeric Display: Shows the line-of-sight distance.
  5. Range (Distance) Units: Displays "Y" for yards, "M" for meters, or "FEEt" for feet.
  6. Setup Mode Indicator: Appears when in the setup menu.
  7. Angle Indicator: Shows the angle of inclination or declination.

Battery Activation and Life Indicator

Before first use, remove the battery compartment cover by lifting the tab and rotating it counter-clockwise. Discard the plastic disc covering the positive battery terminal and insert a new CR2 3-volt lithium battery, negative end first. It is recommended to replace the battery at least once every 12 months. The battery icon on the display indicates the charge level. A blinking icon means the battery needs to be replaced and the unit will not operate.

Maintenance Features

The Bushnell Bone Collector™ 1000 rangefinder features multi-coated optics for high light transmission. Proper care is essential to maintain optimal performance.

  • Cleaning: To remove dust or debris, use a soft lens brush. For fingerprints or smudges, use a soft cotton cloth dampened with a circular motion. A micro-fiber cleaning cloth is ideal for routine optics cleaning. Breathe lightly on the lens to provide moisture, then gently rub with the micro-fiber cloth. For a more thorough cleaning, photographic lens tissue and a photographic-type lens cleaning fluid or isopropyl alcohol can be used. Always apply the fluid to the cleaning cloth, not directly on the lens.
  • Water Resistance: The rangefinder is manufactured and tested to withstand water exposure up to IPX4 standards, meaning it is resistant to splashing water from any direction. However, it should not be submerged.
  • Troubleshooting: If the unit does not turn on, ensure the battery is properly installed and charged. If the display is dim or weak, replace the battery with a new 3-volt lithium battery (CR2). If the unit does not respond to button presses, check the battery and replace if necessary. If the laser is not transmitting, ensure the display is illuminated and the Power/Fire button is being pressed. If the aiming circle is not visible, ensure the Power/Fire button is pressed and the unit is active. If the range reading is unstable, ensure the unit is held steady while pressing the Power/Fire button.

Safety Warnings

  • Laser Safety: As with any laser device, it is not recommended to view the emissions for long periods with magnified lenses directly. Do not point the laser transmitter into a person's eyes.
  • Battery Safety: This product uses a lithium-based battery. Lithium batteries can overheat and cause damage if physically abused. Do not use batteries that are damaged or show signs of physical wear.

Regulatory Compliance

The device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules and ISED's licence-exempt RSSs, ensuring it does not cause harmful interference and accepts any interference received. It is a Class 1 laser product in accordance with IEC 60825-1:2007. The device contains no user-serviceable parts; repairs should only be performed by an Authorized Bushnell Repair center. Unauthorized repairs or modifications could void the warranty and regulatory authority to operate the device.
