Overview

This document is an instruction manual for Bushnell® binoculars, covering all basic models. It provides guidance on how to optimize the viewing experience, adjust the binoculars to the user's eyes, and properly care for the instrument.

Function Description

Bushnell binoculars are optical instruments designed for magnifying distant objects, providing a clearer and brighter image for various outdoor activities such as birdwatching, hunting, and general observation. The manual details the process of adjusting the binoculars for individual users to achieve optimal focus and comfort.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual outlines several key components and their functions:

  • Ocular Lens (A): The lens through which the user looks.
  • Center Focus Knob (B): Used to adjust the focus for both ocular lenses simultaneously after initial diopter adjustment.
  • Eyecups (C): Provide comfortable viewing and help exclude extraneous light. They can be adjusted for use with or without eyeglasses.
  • Tripod Adapter Socket (D): A threaded socket (1/4-20UNC) located under a cap at the far end of the center hinge, allowing the binocular to be mounted on a tripod or monopod for stable viewing (available on full-size models only; compact models are not tripod adaptable).
  • Objective Lens (E): The front lens that gathers light from the observed object.
  • Diopter Adjustment Ring (F): Located directly below the right eyecup, this ring (or the entire right eyecup on some models) allows for fine-tuning the focus of the right ocular lens to compensate for differences in vision between the user's left and right eyes.

Lens Coatings: All models feature anti-reflective (AR) coatings on every air-to-glass surface. Selected models have multiple layers of these AR coatings ("multi-coated") on one or more surfaces, enhancing light transmission for brighter, clearer images.

Water Resistance: Not all basic Bushnell binocular models are waterproof. Users should check the product packaging for verification. Waterproof models are tested for water resistance to IPX7 standards. Non-waterproof models should not be exposed to direct moisture sources like rain or submersion.

Usage Features

The manual provides detailed instructions for several usage features:

  • Eyecup Adjustment:

    • For users wearing glasses, the eyecups should be in the "down" position (or folded down for fold-down style eyecups) to ensure the full field of view.
    • For users not wearing glasses, the eyecups should be twisted up (or left up for fold-down style eyecups) to position the eyes at the correct eye relief distance.
  • IPD (Interpupillary Distance) Adjustment:

    • The user points the binoculars at a blank area and views through them.
    • By grasping each side of the binocular, the user moves the left and right sides closer or farther apart until a single, unshaded image is seen.
  • Focus and Diopter Adjustment:

    1. Adjust eyecups and IPD first.
    2. Cover the right objective lens (with a cap or hand).
    3. Using the center focus knob, focus on a distant object with fine detail through the left side until it appears sharp.
    4. Uncover the right objective lens and cover the left objective lens.
    5. Rotate the diopter adjustment ring (or the entire right eyecup on models without a ring) to bring the object into focus for the right side. This adjustment provides "fine focus" for the right eye, compensating for slight vision differences.
    6. Once adjusted, focusing for any distance is done by simply turning the center focus knob. Users are advised to note their diopter setting for future reference.
  • Neckstrap Attachment:

    • Thread the ends of the neckstrap through the strap lug on each side of the binocular.
    • Thread the strap back through the plastic buckle on the strap.
    • Adjust the strap length to position the binoculars comfortably on the chest.
    • For aftermarket straps with metal O-rings, it is recommended to attach them to plastic zip ties on the strap lugs to prevent damage to the binocular's finish.
  • Tripod Mounting (Full-Size Models Only):

    • Unscrew or pull off the cap covering the threaded (1/4-20UNC) socket at the end of the center hinge.
    • Attach a compatible binocular tripod adapter accessory (e.g., Bushnell #161002CM) to mount the binocular on a standard tripod or monopod. This provides a stable image for prolonged viewing or high-power models.

Maintenance Features

The manual provides instructions for cleaning and general care:

  • Cleaning:

    1. First, blow or brush away any dust or debris from the lens using "canned air" or a soft lens brush.
    2. To remove dirt or fingerprints, use the supplied soft storage bag (micro-fiber cloth) and rub in a circular motion. Avoid coarse cloths (like paper towels) or excessive rubbing, which can scratch the lens.
    3. For routine cleaning, lightly breathe on the lens to provide moisture, then gently rub with the micro-fiber cloth.
    4. For a more thorough cleaning, use photographic lens tissue and lens cleaning fluid or isopropyl alcohol. Always apply the fluid to the cleaning cloth, never directly to the lens.
    5. Never use household window cleaning liquids, facial tissue, or clothing with fibers that can be abrasive or hold oils, as these can damage optical coatings.
  • Care of the Optics:

    • Avoid sharp impacts and set the binocular down gently on hard surfaces.
    • Ensure the neckstrap is securely fastened before placing it around the neck.
    • Store the binocular in a cool, dry place when not in use.
    • Be aware of the water resistance specifications for your model. Non-waterproof models should be protected from moisture, as water damage is not covered by the warranty.
