Overview

This document is the Owner's/Operator's Manual for the BUSHRANGER HT231 Hedge Trimmer, a power equipment designed for cutting and trimming foliage and small branches.

Function Description:

The BUSHRANGER HT231 is a two-stroke engine-powered hedge trimmer. Its primary function is to cut and trim hedges and small branches, with a design capable of handling branches up to 7 mm in diameter, though cutting larger branches will proportionally increase wear and tear on the machine. The device features a rotational rear handle for adjustable operating positions, enhancing user comfort and safety during various trimming tasks. It is crucial for operators to read and understand the manual thoroughly before use to ensure safe and effective operation, as failure to comply with instructions can lead to serious injury or death.

Usage Features:

The HT231 Hedge Trimmer is designed for user convenience and safety.

  • Starting Procedure: The engine features a primer bulb carburetor. To start, the operator must push and release the primer bulb until fuel flows freely, move the choke lever to the closed position (or open if the engine is warm), set the engine stop switch to "ON," and then pull the starter cord quickly and powerfully until the engine starts. After starting, the choke lever should be moved to the open position, and the engine allowed to warm up for a few minutes.
  • Stopping Procedure: To stop the engine, release the throttle trigger and slide the stop switch to the "STOP" position.
  • Rotational Rear Handle: The rear handle is adjustable to five different positions by pulling a lock lever and rotating the handle. This feature allows the operator to select the most comfortable and safe operating position for various cutting angles. It is critical that the handle is securely locked in position before operation, and adjustments should only be made when the engine is stopped.
  • Carburetor Adjustment: The hedge trimmer is equipped with a non-adjustable fuel mixture carburetor, with the idle speed being the only operator-adjustable setting. The idle speed screw can be rotated clockwise to increase engine speed or counter-clockwise to decrease it. The cutting blades should not move at idle speed (2700-3300 rpm), and the engine should not stall. If blades move or the engine stalls after adjustment, the unit should be serviced by an authorized dealer.
  • Fueling: Fueling should be done outdoors, away from sparks or flames, with the engine off and cool. The fuel tank should not be overfilled, stopping 10-20 mm from the top. Spilled fuel must be wiped up before starting. The fuel mixture requires a specific ratio of non-leaded regular petrol and quality two-stroke oil (50:1 or 25:1, depending on oil type). Fuel and oil should be mixed in a separate, approved container before being added to the trimmer's fuel tank.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes the importance of wearing personal protective equipment, including eye and hearing protection, heavy long pants, boots, and gloves. Operators should avoid loose clothing and secure long hair. The trimmer should not be operated when tired, ill, or under the influence of substances. Operation in enclosed spaces is prohibited due to exhaust fumes. The work area must be clear of bystanders, children, pets, and hidden hazards like wires or fencing. The machine should never be operated without proper guards.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and performance of the HT231 Hedge Trimmer.

  • Adjusting the Cutting Blades: Before operation, the cutting blades' adjustment should be checked. Loose blades can vibrate, while overly tight blades can cause overloading. Adjustment involves loosening nuts, turning screws until snug, then backing them out by one-fourth to a half turn, and then tightening the nuts. Blades should be lubricated with light oil.
  • Air Filter: The air filter should be cleaned daily or more often in dusty conditions and replaced every 100 hours. Cleaning involves removing the foam filter, washing it with warm, soapy water, drying it, and lightly applying SAE 30 motor oil before reassembling.
  • Fuel Filter: The fuel filter should be replaced every 100 hours. To replace, the fuel tank should be empty, the cap removed, and the filter pulled out with a wire hook. The old filter is removed, and a new one attached to the hose, ensuring the hose is not kinked when reinserting.
  • Spark Plug: The spark plug should be inspected every 25 hours and replaced every 100 hours. Maintenance includes cleaning electrodes with a stiff brush and adjusting the electrode air gap to 0.6-0.7 mm. The spark plug should not be overtightened during installation.
  • Cylinder Cooling Fins: The cooling fins need cleaning every 25 hours or weekly to ensure proper airflow and prevent engine overheating. This involves removing the muffler cover and cylinder cover to access and clean dirt and debris from the fins.
  • Spark Arrester: The spark arrester should be inspected and cleaned every 25 hours. If it cannot be thoroughly cleaned or is damaged, it should be replaced. Cleaning involves removing the muffler cover, tailpipe, and spark arrester, then cleaning with a safety solvent and a stiff brush.
  • Lubrication (Gearcase and Blades): The gearcase and blades require lubrication after every 15 hours of use, or every 2 hours under severe conditions (high temperatures, continuous operation). Approximately 15g of #2 lithium-base grease should be applied to the gearcase via the grease fitting until it comes out from the blade opening. The blades should be lubricated with a light (#10 wt.) oil.
  • General Cleaning and Tightening: Regular checks of all fasteners for tightness and cleaning of the entire machine are recommended. Pitch and gum deposits should be removed from the cutting blades daily.

Storage:

For long-term storage, the fuel tank should be emptied, and the primer bulb pumped until all fuel is discharged from the carburetor. The engine should be run to remove any remaining fuel. All regular maintenance should be performed. The spark plug should be removed, a small amount of oil squirted into the cylinder, and the starter cord pulled once. The spark plug should then be reinstalled. The blades should be liberally lubricated with light oil. The hedge trimmer should be stored in a dry place away from excessive heat, sparks, or open flames.
