Overview

This document describes BVA Hydraulics Mini Jacks, models J11050, J11055, J11100, and J11200, providing an instruction manual and service parts information.

Function Description

The BVA Hydraulics Mini Jacks are designed for lifting, positioning, or moving rated capacity loads. They are explicitly not designed to sustain loads as a stand-alone device. Any load lifted, positioned, or moved by these jacks must be immediately supported by appropriately rated mechanical means. The product is not suitable for applications involving lifting, positioning, moving, or supporting persons, animals, hazardous materials, mobile homes, dwellings, mirrors, plate glass, or connecting/securing hatches, components, and materials between bulkheads. The user is responsible for determining the product's suitability for a given task.

Important Technical Specifications

The Mini Jacks come in two main capacity categories:

  • 5 Ton Capacity: Models J11050 and J11055.
    • Rated Capacity: 10,000 lb. (5 ton)
    • Hydraulic Pressure @ Rated Capacity: 7,000 psi
    • J11050: Min. Height 2 3/8 in., Max. Height 3 1/8 in., Base Size 4 1/8" x 4", Weight 4.6 lb.
    • J11055: Min. Height 3 3/8 in., Max. Height 4 7/8 in., Base Size 4 1/8" x 4", Weight 5.3 lb.
  • 10 Ton Capacity: Models J11100 and J11200.
    • Rated Capacity:
      • J11100: 20,000 lb. (10 ton)
      • J11200: 40,000 lb. (20 ton)
    • Hydraulic Pressure @ Rated Capacity:
      • J11100: 7,850 psi
      • J11200: 10,800 psi
    • J11100: Min. Height 4 3/4 in., Max. Height 6 1/4 in., Base Size 4 7/8 x 4 3/8, Weight 12.6 lb.
    • J1200: Min. Height 5 1/8 in., Max. Height 6 3/4 in., Base Size 5 3/8 x 4 3/4, Weight 16.7 lb.

Usage Features

Safety First:

  • Always read, understand, and follow all provided instructions.
  • This is a lifting device only; never work on, under, or around a load supported solely by a hydraulic jack.
  • Immediately support lifted loads with appropriately rated mechanical means.
  • Use only on hard, level surfaces capable of sustaining rated capacity loads.
  • Center the load on the saddle.
  • No alterations should be made to the device. Use only manufacturer-provided attachments, adapters, and accessories.
  • Be alert and sober; never operate under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Use only high-grade hydraulic jack oil.
  • Always use a calibrated means to determine applied force and never exceed the rated capacity.

Before Use:

  • Ensure the intended load contact point can withstand the jack's applied load.
  • Familiarize yourself with the owner's manual and product components.
  • To operate, use the handle to engage the release valve:
    • CLOSED position: Turn clockwise until firm resistance is felt to pressurize hydraulic fluid and raise the ram plunger.
    • OPEN position: Turn counter-clockwise, but no more than 1/2 turn from the closed position, to lower the ram plunger.
  • Check that the pump operates smoothly. Replace damaged or missing parts with factory-authorized replacements.
  • Bleeding/Venting Trapped Air: With the release valve in the OPEN position and saddle fully lowered, remove the oil filler plug. Pump the handle 6 to 8 full strokes to release trapped air. Oil level should be even with the bottom of the oil filler plug hole. Reinstall the plug.

Operation:

  • Raising the Ram Plunger:
    1. Close the release valve by turning the handle clockwise until firm resistance is felt.
    2. Pump until the load reaches the desired height.
    3. Immediately secure the load with appropriately rated mechanical devices, including cribbing and blocking where practical.
    4. Never allow personnel to work or pass under a load until it is secured.
  • Lowering:
    1. Ensure all personnel are clear of the load.
    2. Slowly turn the release valve counter-clockwise (no more than 1/2 turn) using the manufacturer's provided handle. The more the valve is opened, the faster the load descends.
    3. If the handle is damaged or operates abnormally, discontinue use until a replacement handle assembly is acquired.
    4. Push the ram down and handle sleeve in to reduce exposure to rust and contamination after removing the jack from under the load.

Maintenance Features

Important Fluid Information:

  • Use only good grade hydraulic jack oil (Mobil DTE13M or equivalent recommended).
  • NEVER mix different types of fluid or use brake fluid, turbine oil, transmission fluid, motor oil, or glycerin, as this can cause premature jack failure and sudden load loss.

Adding Oil:

  1. With the saddle fully lowered, set the jack in an upright, level position.
  2. Locate and remove the oil filler plug.
  3. Fill with oil until it is even with the bottom of the oil filler hole.
  4. Reinstall the oil filler plug.

Changing Oil:

  • For best performance, replace the complete fluid supply at least once per year.
  1. With the saddle fully lowered, set the jack in an upright, level position.
  2. Locate and remove the oil filler plug.
  3. Lay the jack on its side and drain the fluid into a suitable container. Dispose of hydraulic fluid according to local regulations.
  4. Fill with oil until it is even with the bottom of the oil filler hole.
  5. Reinstall the oil filler plug.

Lubrication:

  • Periodically apply a light lubricating oil to pivot points to ensure free movement of pump piston linkages.
  • Note: Never apply oil to the saddle.

Cleaning:

  • Periodically check the pump piston, ram plunger, and saddle for signs of rust or corrosion.
  • Clean as needed and wipe with a clean, oil-soaked rag.
  • Note: Never use sandpaper or abrasive material on these surfaces.

Storage:

  • Store the jack with the pump piston, ram plunger/saddle fully lowered, and the release valve open (no more than 1/2 turn). This helps prevent rust and corrosion on critical surfaces.

Troubleshooting: The manual includes a troubleshooting guide for common issues:

  • Jack will not pressurize: Possible causes include a release valve not tightly closed, load being too heavy, or hydraulic unit malfunction. Corrective actions are to ensure the release valve is tightly closed, consider a higher capacity jack, or contact a service center.
  • Jack "bleeds off" after lift: Indicates a hydraulic unit malfunction, requiring contact with a service center.
  • Fluid leaks from reservoir area while lowering: Possible causes are an overfilled reservoir, or a deformed/seized ram plunger/cylinder. Corrective actions are to drain fluid to the proper level or contact a service center.
  • Ram plunger will not remain lowered: Indicates air trapped in the system. Follow instructions for bleeding air.
  • Poor lift performance: Possible causes include low fluid level, air trapped in the system, or hydraulic unit malfunction. Corrective actions are to ensure proper fluid level, bleed air, or contact a service center.
  • Will not lift to full extension: Indicates low fluid level. Corrective action is to ensure proper fluid level.
