Function Description:

The C&C 99 is a sailboat designed for both cruising and racing. The manual serves as a guide for owners to understand and maintain their yacht, ensuring safe and satisfactory operation. Important Technical Specifications:

  • Hull: Single unit fiberglass molding with NPG/ISO gelcoat, vacuum assist laminate. Features Unidirectional 'E' glass in epoxy resin, reinforced and cored with CORE CELL for optimal strength, stiffness, and weight. The hull is post-cured for maximum strength.
  • Deck: Single unit fiberglass molding with a gelcoat surface. A BALSA core is incorporated into the structure for additional stiffness. Non-skid finish is molded into working areas.
  • Hull/Deck Joint: Top flange of the hull is capped with marine adhesive sealant. The deck is fitted and fastened through an extruded aluminum toerail by stainless steel bolts.
  • Rudder & Steering: Constructed of two molded composite shells, which are bonded together and injected with two-part foam for added strength. The rudderpost is carbon fiber with stainless steel sleeves and lower rudder bearings. Wheel steering is standard, with a wire cable steering system housed in an ergonomically comfortable pedestal.
  • Ballast: Keel is made of lead alloyed with antimony for strength, cast to industry tolerances. The foil shape provides hydrodynamic lift for enhanced upwind performance. Keel is fastened to the hull with stainless steel bolts, cast into the lead, and bedded with sealing material to prevent leaks.
  • Rigging: Utilizes fixed stainless steel rod or wire for support. 'Stays' provide fore and aft support (backstay, forestay), while 'shrouds' provide transverse support (main/upper shrouds, lower shrouds, intermediate shrouds). A two-spreader system supports the mast.
  • Spars: Designed with an aerodynamically shaped cross-section to reduce drag and its effect on the mainsail.
  • Fuel System: Aluminum fuel tank, pre-tested and static grounded.
  • Power Plant and Transmission: Engine specifications and information are detailed in the separate Engine Owner's Manual. Transmission includes reduction and reverse gears. Saildrive is standard.
  • Propellers: Standard folding two-bladed bronze unit.
  • Exhaust System: Horizontal type muffler. Fresh water cooling system with an auxiliary pump drawing water through the intake port, circulating it through a heat exchanger, then into the muffler and overboard. Seawater in the heat exchanger cools the engine coolant.
  • Electrical System: Designed for reliable operation. Main switch has four positions: "OFF", "ONE" (house bank), "TWO" (engine start battery), and "BOTH" (combines all batteries). Recommended batteries are series G27 deep cycle. Standard alternator supplied with the engine.
  • Electronics: Includes knotmeters, distance logs, depth sounders, wind speed indicators, radio direction finders, VHF, SSB radios, GPS, and radar.

Usage Features:

  • Commissioning: Detailed checklist for dealer and owner, covering hull, deck, sail drive, keel inspection, cleaning, waxing, battery charging, hose clamp checks, oil levels, emergency tiller testing, bilge flushing, and pump strainer cleaning.
  • Mast Stepping: Instructions for attaching backstay, shrouds, headstay, centering the mast, tightening turnbuckles, installing cotter pins, rigging boom, and connecting mast wiring.
  • Engine Operation: Refer to Engine Owner's Manual for specific starting and operating procedures. General steps include turning on main battery switch, checking water intake valve, ensuring neutral gear, and following engine manual instructions. Advisable to start engine before lowering sails for maneuverability.
  • Engine Shut Down: Close throttle to slow idle, place gearshift in neutral, stop engine. Close water intake valve if not used for long periods. Turn off main battery switch if no other electrical service is required.
  • Rigging Tuning: Two phases: at the dock and while sailing.
    • At the Dock: Center mast transversely using main halyard, tighten upper shrouds uniformly, then lower shrouds (allowing about 1 inch of play). Check mast rake (fore and aft angle) and adjust forestay. Ensure spreaders are padded and taped. Pin all turnbuckles.
    • While Sailing: Select a day with steady 8-12 knot breeze and flat sea. Sail close-hauled on starboard tack, sight up luff groove, and tighten starboard lower shroud if mast falls to leeward. Repeat on port tack. Upper shrouds should show slack at 15-20 degrees of heel. Backstay tension reduces forestay sag.
  • Fueling: Extinguish all open flames, no smoking, turn off main electrical switch and all circuits. Close inlet cap tightly after filling and wash down spills. Check for fuel tank vent blockages if filling is difficult.
  • Safety Equipment: Emphasizes the importance of carrying USCG approved fire extinguishers, life jackets (one per person), life buoys (with gravity-activated strobe and long line), safety harnesses, waterproof flashlights (at least two), approved flares, fog signaling devices (at least one "lung power" type), and an anchor with proper size, length, and chain connection.

Maintenance Features:

  • General: Regular and frequent maintenance is required, depending on usage conditions. Continually check running and standing rigging, winches, engine, bilge, head, and surface finish. Wash down deck hardware with fresh water after sailing in salt water.
  • Gelcoat Surfaces:
    • Cleaning: Wash hull and deck regularly with fresh water and mild detergent. Use sponge or soft brush on smooth surfaces, stiffer brush on non-skid areas. Rinse with fresh water.
    • Waxing/Polishing: Wax topsides annually with automotive or boat wax. Do not wax non-skid surfaces. Waxing gloss areas helps prevent fading. For dark hulls, follow Awl Grip paint recommendations.
    • Repair: Minor scratches can be buffed with abrasive compound, then waxed. Gelcoat repair kits are provided for deeper damage. Consult C&C Dealer for major damage.
    • Below Deck: Clean with detergent and water, then rinse. Wax to maintain appearance.
    • Sinks: Fiberglass sinks can be maintained like other gelcoat surfaces.
    • Stains: Scrub frequently if moored where leaves or birds roost. Protective covers can reduce maintenance.
  • Windows and Hatches: Glazed with Lexan. Clean with mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive cleaners. Lexan polish or toothpaste can be used for polishing.
  • Wood: Interior cherry and teak surfaces have varnish finish. Rinse regularly with fresh water and liquid detergent, then polish with chamois leather. Reapply varnish as needed due to UV exposure.
  • Bottom of the Yacht:
    • Painting: DO NOT SAND GELCOAT FINISH WITH SANDPAPER COARSER THAN 320 GRIT (voids warranty). Sandless primers can be used. Consult C&C Dealer for instructions.
    • Routine: Apply best quality bottom paint carefully. Frequency depends on water conditions and usage. Scrub bottom immediately after hauling if marine growth is present or if yacht will be out of water for extended periods.
  • Cove Stripe: Colored vinyl tape with C&C trademark arrows. Clean with mild detergent solution. Replacement tape available from C&C Dealer.
  • Vinyl Rub Strip: Clean with detergent and water. Good quality marine cleaner formulated for vinyl may be required.
  • Standing Rigging: Inspect regularly for integrity, broken strands, cracked swage terminals, nicks, scratches, dents. Check clevis pins for wear, proper pinning, and taping. Consult C&C Dealer for potential problems.
  • Running Rigging: Check regularly for wear, abrasions, or broken strands. Lubricate all moving parts.
  • Lifelines, Pulpits and Stanchions: Check regularly for integrity. Ensure access gates are closed. Check swage end fittings, lock rings, and turnbuckle tightness.
  • Winches and Blocks: Clean and lubricate regularly (at least twice a season). Inspect for damage. Remove and reseal winches with marine sealant if necessary. Sheaves and blocks should be sprayed with silicone lubricant. Check sheaves at masthead and spreader ends.
  • Engine: Refer to Engine Owner's Manual for maintenance.
  • Power Train: Details under Section 6.
  • Electrical: Wiring requires little maintenance. Check exposed terminals and connections several times a season (more frequently in saltwater) for tightness and corrosion. Protect connections with spray coating. "Clean, Dry, Tight" are key factors.
  • Upholstery:
    • Cloth: Stain-resistant fabric, dry-clean only. Keep aired and dried to prevent mold. Stand cushions on end when unused for prolonged periods. Clean lockers and leave doors open.
    • Ultraleather or Ultrasuede: Machine wash delicate cycle, warm water, mild detergent (Ivory Snow, Woolite, no bluing agents or bleach). Line or tumble dry low.
  • Steering: Follow manufacturer's instructions (Edson or Lewmar). Inspect thoroughly each season. Check for bending, distorting, or creaking under heavy load. Report abnormalities to C&C dealer.
  • Deck Fittings: Check regularly for leaks (chain plates, genoa tracks, line stoppers, etc.). Re-bed with marine sealant if leaking.
  • Winter Storage (Laying Up):
    • Hauling: Proper sling placement is crucial to avoid damage. Slings should not be placed on propeller or sail drive. Forward sling in main bulkhead area. Pad hull with carpet below cove line. Tie line between slings to prevent slipping.
    • Cradle Support: At least 60% of yacht weight on keel. Hull supports should bear no more than 30-36% of weight. Do not put weight on aft keel tip.
    • When Hauled: Scrub bottom, wash topsides and deck. Remove cold/damp sensitive gear. Store cushions on edge. Lubricate and cover exposed mechanical fittings. Check electrical/mechanical components for service/replacement. Cover exposed holes. Winterize raw water side of engine's cooling system; freshwater side should contain antifreeze.
    • Fresh Water System: Pump dry. Pour 2 gallons of recreational vehicle antifreeze into water tanks. Pump antifreeze through freshwater system. Remove inspection port on top of water tank and dry interior. Place baking soda in open glass container in inspection port.
    • Head and Holding Tanks: Clean bowl, pump out holding tank, and flush thoroughly. Add disinfectant/antifreeze. Follow manufacturer's instructions.
    • Batteries: Remove and store in warm, dry area. Ensure they are fully charged.
    • Diesel Engines: Change engine oil and filter. Clean fuel filters. Drain and replace fuel in fuel system. Run engine to circulate antifreeze. Remove water pump or impeller. Insert wooden plug or oily cloth into exhaust port. Loosen alternator belt.
