Overview

The Capresso MT900 (Model #498) is a 10-cup rapid brew coffee maker designed for household use, offering a blend of convenience, advanced features, and quality coffee brewing. This thermal coffee maker is engineered to deliver hot, flavorful coffee, with a focus on ease of use and consistent performance.

Function Description

The primary function of the Capresso MT900 is to brew up to 10 cups of coffee quickly and efficiently. It utilizes a rapid brew system to ensure that water reaches the optimal temperature for extracting maximum flavor from coffee grounds. A key feature is its stainless steel thermal carafe, which is designed to keep coffee hot for up to 4 hours without the need for a warming plate, thus preserving the coffee's taste and preventing it from becoming burnt or bitter.

The coffee maker incorporates a charcoal water filtration system, which significantly enhances coffee taste by removing up to 82% of chlorine and other impurities from tap water. An electronic charcoal filter indicator takes the guesswork out of maintenance, signaling when it's time to replace the charcoal insert. This ensures that fresh, clean water is always used for brewing.

For added convenience, the MT900 includes programmable features such as a 24-hour clock and an auto-on timer. This allows users to set the coffee maker to automatically start brewing at a pre-programmed time, ensuring fresh coffee is ready when desired. The illuminated display with AM/PM indicator makes it easy to set and monitor these functions.

The brewing process is initiated by a simple On/Off button with a red indicator light. For smaller batches, a dedicated 3-5 cup brewing button with a green indicator light slows down the brewing process, allowing for full flavor extraction even with reduced coffee amounts.

Usage Features

Setting up and using the Capresso MT900 is straightforward. Before first use, it's recommended to clean all loose parts with warm water and run two cycles with only water to clean the internal components.

The water tank is removable for easy filling and cleaning. Users should always fill the tank with cold water, never warm or hot, and ensure the water level does not exceed the MAX setting to prevent overflow during brewing. The water level indicator provides clear visibility of the remaining water.

The coffee maker offers flexibility in filtration. It comes with a reusable GoldTone filter, which can be used directly. Alternatively, users can opt for size 4 paper filters, ensuring to fold the bottom and side crimps for a proper fit. It's important not to use a paper filter inside the GoldTone filter. The recommended coffee amount is one level scoop per cup, with specific guidelines provided for different grind types (regular/drip grind vs. fine grind) and filter types to prevent overflow.

The charcoal water filter is activated by pressing the "Filter" button, which illuminates a green indicator light. After activation, it's recommended to run four cups of water through the machine and discard it. The electronic indicator monitors usage and time, blinking after 8 weeks or 60 brewing cycles (whichever comes first) to remind users to replace the cartridge. Resetting the indicator after replacement is a simple process of holding the "Filter" button until the light stops blinking and illuminates steadily again.

The thermal carafe plays a crucial role in maintaining coffee temperature. For best results, pre-warming the carafe with hot water is recommended. The carafe lid has a specific "brewing position" (closed indicator near the handle, Fig. 11) that must be engaged during brewing to activate the drip stop function. If the lid is in the "pouring position" (open indicator near the spout, Fig. 12) during brewing, the drip stop may not work, leading to potential overflow. The lid also features a pouring indentation, allowing coffee to be poured without fully removing the lid, which helps retain heat. It's important to keep the carafe upright during transport to prevent spills.

For automatic brewing, the "prog" button is used to set the desired auto-on time, followed by using the hour and minute buttons. Once the time is set, pressing the "auto" button activates the programmed brewing cycle, indicated by a green light. At the scheduled time, the auto light turns off, and the red on button illuminates, signifying that brewing has commenced.

The drip stop feature allows users to temporarily remove the carafe during brewing for up to 20 seconds to pour a cup, provided the carafe lid is correctly positioned.

Maintenance Features

Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential for the longevity and optimal performance of the Capresso MT900.

After each use, the GoldTone filter should be cleaned to prevent coffee oils from clogging the small filter openings and spoiling coffee taste. The filter holder and GoldTone filter are dishwasher safe (upper rack). The lid of the carafe should also be cleaned under running water. The drip-stop mechanism in the filter holder should be checked to ensure it's free of coffee particles, which could prevent it from closing properly.

The main appliance should be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. It should never be immersed in water or any other liquid, nor cleaned under running water. Scouring agents or hard implements should be avoided.

The stainless steel thermal carafe requires specific care. It should never be immersed completely in hot water or any other liquid. The exterior can be wiped with a non-abrasive wet cloth and dried. The interior should be cleaned with hot water, a mild detergent, and a non-abrasive household brush, then rinsed thoroughly. The carafe is not dishwasher safe. It's also important not to place the carafe on hot surfaces, as this can loosen the vacuum seal and impair its thermal function.

Decalcifying the coffee maker is crucial for efficient operation and should be performed every 2-4 months, or if brewing 10 cups takes more than 15 minutes. The process involves removing the GoldTone filter, dissolving a decalcifying agent (such as Capresso Cleaning Solution) in water, pouring the mixture into the water tank, and running partial and full brewing cycles with the solution, followed by several rinses with fresh cold water. Only decalcifying agents suitable for drip coffee makers should be used, and their instructions followed carefully.

Troubleshooting tips are provided for common issues, such as coffee dripping from the filter when the carafe is removed (often due to ground coffee blocking the drip stop) or ground coffee overflowing the GoldTone filter (usually due to too fine a grind or too much coffee). These issues can often be resolved by cleaning the filter holder, adjusting coffee grind, or using a paper filter.

The charcoal filter cartridge should be replaced every 8 weeks or after 60 brewings, whichever comes first. Unused cartridges can be stored indefinitely, but activated cartridges should not be used for longer than six weeks to prevent harmful bacteria build-up. Replacement cartridges are readily available.

Overall, the Capresso MT900 is designed for coffee enthusiasts who appreciate a reliable, feature-rich coffee maker that delivers excellent taste and maintains coffee temperature, all while offering user-friendly operation and maintenance.
