Function Description:

The GLOVE™ Hug sling is a toileting sling designed to facilitate the safe and comfortable transfer of individuals, either from a seated or supine position, using a hoist. Its primary function is to provide secure support during lifting operations, ensuring both user safety and comfort. The sling is intended for use by competent persons who have completed a risk assessment and are trained in hoist and sling usage. It is crucial to select the correct size and type of sling for the individual to ensure safety and comfort during transfers.

Usage Features:

The GLOVE™ Hug sling features a 3-loop style toileting design with several components aimed at user comfort and secure fitting:

  • 'Comfort' Lining: Enhances user comfort during transfers.
  • Adjustable Length Extensor Strap: Allows for customization of the sling's length to suit different users and hoist configurations.
  • Waist Clunk-Click Buckles (3): Three buckles around the waist section provide secure fastening and allow for tightening with adjustment straps.
  • Leg Clunk-Click Buckles (3): Three buckles on the leg sections ensure secure fitting around the hips and thighs, also adjustable with straps.
  • Padded Thigh Support: Offers additional comfort and reduces pressure on the user's thighs.
  • Strap Pocket (2): Pockets are provided to store unused buckles and straps, particularly when using the sling for standing transfers where the middle leg buckle is not required.
  • Leg Lift Strap (3-Loop): Provides attachment points for the hoist, allowing for different lifting configurations.
  • Aperture: The design includes an aperture, typical for toileting slings, to facilitate hygiene tasks.

Fitting the Sling:

The user guide provides detailed instructions for fitting the sling from both seated and supine positions:

  • In a Seated Position:
    1. Slide the sling down with the label facing outwards, ensuring it is centrally aligned with the spine and leg sections are aligned with the user's thighs.
    2. Wrap the waist section across the user's waist and fasten the three waist clunk-click buckles, tightening as necessary.
    3. Bring the leg sections around the hips, feed them under and up between the thighs, and fasten the leg clunk-clip buckles, tightening as necessary.
    4. Attach leg straps to the hoist first, then the shoulder straps. Re-check and re-tighten clunk-click belt if necessary before completing the transfer.
    5. For STANDING transfers, the middle leg buckle is not required and can be stored in the pocket. Only shoulder straps are attached to the hoist, adjusted for head clearance.
    6. For ACCESS and TRANSFER, specific instructions are given for connecting the middle leg buckle (illustrated with figures a-c).
  • From a Supine Position:
    1. Roll the user onto their side. Fold the sling in half lengthways with the label inside. Position the sling with the top of the aperture aligned with the user's coccyx and the center of the sling aligned with the user's spine.
    2. Fold the uppermost section over the user like a blanket. Tuck the remaining sling material under the user, ensuring straps are tucked in. Roll the user onto their opposite side, unfurling the sling beneath them. Reposition the user onto their back with the sling fully spread underneath.
    3. Secure the waistband around the user and fasten the three waist clunk-click buckles. Note that further tightening may be needed during lifting as the user's body thins out.
    4. Feed the leg sections under the thighs and between the user's legs. Secure the leg clunk-click buckles on each leg.
    5. Raise the user to a seated position. Attach first the leg lift straps, then the shoulder lift straps to the hoist spreader bar. After checking for snagging, complete the transfer.

Maintenance Features:

  • Sling Inspection:
    • Pre-use sling checks by a competent person are recommended.
    • Slings are Class One Medical Devices and subject to Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) Examinations. LOLER examinations must be conducted by a trained and qualified person. Space is provided on the sling label to record LOLER details.
    • If there is any doubt about sling safety, remove it from use until checked and authorized by a competent person.
  • Product Care (Laundering):
    • Wash gently at 40°C using a mild soap solution or non-biological detergent without bleaching additives.
    • Do not add bleach or stain removers.
    • Air dry, cabinet dry, or tumble dry on a cool cycle (below 60°C). Do not tumble dry on a hot setting.
    • Do not place on hot pipes or heaters. Keep away from flames.
    • Do not iron.
    • Close hook & loop fastenings before laundering to prevent damage.
    • Repeated washing may lead to sling deterioration. Care & Independence strongly recommends replacing the sling at the first signs of wear or damage, rather than after a specified timeframe.
    • The sling label must remain legible throughout its working lifetime.
  • Decontamination: Slings can withstand a strong decontamination routine, but regular use may impair the lifespan. A Sling Care Instruction Guide (including decontamination advice) is available for download.
  • Damaged or Faulty Slings: Care & Independence has a strict Returns & Repair Procedure. Slings should not be returned without completing the Return/Repair form.
  • Additional Support:
    • QR Code: A QR code on the sling label provides access to product information, user guide, fitting video, sling care instructions, pre-check inspection guide, and sling sizing guide.
    • Training: Free product training is offered.
    • Consultation: Expert advice, free assessments, and full support are available.
    • Repair Services: Faded label replacement, sling repair, and LOLER examinations are provided.

The user guide emphasizes the importance of following all instructions to ensure the safe and effective use of the GLOVE™ Hug sling.
