Overview

The Carvin Audio TRx3210/TRx3210A is a professional line array loudspeaker system designed for a wide range of sound reinforcement applications, from small venues to large-scale events. Manufactured in San Diego, California, USA, these systems are engineered for high audio quality, reliability, and ease of deployment. The TRx series offers excellent pattern control, versatile rigging options for both flying and ground stacking, and comprehensive technical documentation.

Function Description:

The TRx3210/TRx3210A systems are modular line array loudspeakers that can be configured in various ways to suit different performance venues. They are designed to produce a smooth, consistent sound field with precise vertical and horizontal coverage. The passive TRx3210 can operate in full-range/passive mode or bi-amped 3-way mode, offering flexibility in amplification. The active TRx3210A features an integrated 2500W tri-amp with X-Drive™ DSP processing, providing optimized presets for different array configurations and ground stacks. Both models utilize Carvin's PurePath™ Horn Lens and custom MF/LF drivers to achieve superior sound clarity and projection.

Usage Features:

Line Array Effect:

The TRx3210/TRx3210A systems leverage the line array effect, where enclosures couple at 0 degrees to project sound with reduced drop-off over distance (3dB per doubling of distance compared to 6dB for conventional enclosures). The PurePath™ horn lens provides a tight 10-degree vertical x 100-degree horizontal pattern per cabinet. When configured in a "J" curve, the bottom elements act as a point source for closer listeners, while the upper elements maintain line array projection. The TRx3210 can be deployed in a full curvilinear array with 10-degree angles between elements, achieving 40 degrees of vertical and 100 degrees of horizontal coverage with just four enclosures.

Rigging and Stacking:

The systems offer two primary rigging modes:

  1. Ground Stacking (TRx3210NF): Features durable interlocking feet for stacking without flyware, ideal for use on subwoofers or elevated with SS4 poles.
  2. SureFly™ Rigging (TRx3210/TRx3210A): Utilizes SureFly™ hardware for safe and practical overhead suspension. The hardware allows for easy assembly of arrays or clusters with minimal external parts. The load is taken entirely through the SureFly™ hardware, not the cabinet's woodwork.
    • T-Bar Installation: The T-Bar attaches to the top array enclosure, with side plates inserting into the SureFly hardware. Bolts are tightened to 50 ft-lbs, and quick-release pins secure the connection.
    • Shackle Installation: A rated 5/8" shackle attaches to lug #4 on the T-Bar for a straight vertical hang. Different lug holes allow for varying degrees of forward tilt. Two-point hanging with two chain motor hoists allows for angle adjustment by raising or lowering the front/back of the array.
    • Adding Enclosures: Additional enclosures are lifted and placed underneath, aligning feet with receptacles. Side adjustment plates insert between the array module hardware.
    • Angle Adjustment: Quick-release pins allow for setting angles between enclosures (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 degrees) to create J-curves or straight arrays. The "A" position on the lower enclosure, combined with pin positions on the upper enclosure, sets angles up to 5 degrees. The "B" position on the lower enclosure sets angles for 7.5 and 10 degrees.

TRx3210 Passive System Configuration:

  • Bi-Amp Switch: A concealed switch allows conversion from full-range/passive to bi-amped 3-way mode. The switch is accessed by removing a rubber plug and sliding it to the right.
  • Pin Flip/Mode Switch: For full-range operation, a concealed switch allows selection of either pins 1+ & 1- (standard) or pins 2+ & 2- for speaker cable runs, simplifying wiring with 4-pin TwistLoc cables.
  • H.F. Attenuation Switch: This switch provides three user-selectable positions (0dB, -3dB, -6dB) to adjust high-frequency output volume. This is useful for smaller arrays (less than four units) or for "shading" in larger arrays (upper boxes at full output for distance, lower boxes attenuated for near-field listeners). This switch is only functional in FULL RANGE passive mode.

TRx3210A Active Module Settings:

  • Power Switch: Turns the system on.
  • LED Indicators: POWER (unit on), SIGNAL (signal present), LIMIT (maximum output reached, flashing is acceptable), PROTECT (protection circuit activated).
  • Digital Display: Shows system information and settings, including loaded presets.
  • Setting Buttons (UP/DOWN, LEFT/RIGHT):
    • UP/DOWN (SET): Loads presets for different speaker configurations based on the number of TRx3210A units and array angle (e.g., 1-4 boxes at 0-2.5 deg, 5-8 boxes at 0-2.5 deg).
    • LEFT/RIGHT: Accesses and sets Input Sensitivity (1.0, 1.2, 1.4, or 2.0 Vrms).
  • USB Port: For updating system firmware and additional presets.
  • Remote Level (Mute) Connector: Terminal block for 5-volt volume control, typically for permanent installations.
  • AC IN Jack (Blue PowerCon™ A-type): Connects to power source. One NAC3FCA connector is supplied.
  • AC OUT Jack (Grey PowerCon™ B-type): Powers other TRx3210A units or other PowerCon™ B-type compatible devices.
  • Fuse: Internal 250V Slow Blow 10A fuse.

Audio Processing (Passive Systems):

Carvin recommends a loudspeaker management processor (e.g., Carvin DCMLx power amps or XD360 X-Drive™ outboard processor) for optimum performance. Preset settings for full-range and bi-amping configurations are provided, covering various array sizes and subwoofer integration.

Transport:

The optional DB3210 Transport Dolly Board (Baltic Birch/Duratec™) allows up to four TRx3210 cabinets to be transported in a pre-rigged configuration. It is wide enough to allow lock pins to be inserted while on the dolly, enabling lifting of the block of four cabinets together, and is dimensioned for efficient truck packing.

Maintenance Features:

  • Field Replaceable Drivers: The dual 10-inch MF/LF drivers are front-loaded and field replaceable.
  • Grill Access: Front steel grills are foam-backed for protection and easily removed for service access.
  • Pin Storage: Quick-release pins can be stored in the handles on the inside of the SureFly hardware plates during transport to prevent misplacement or damage and to hold the inner adjustment plate from swinging down.
  • Fuse Replacement (TRx3210A): The internal fuse is accessed by removing the power cord, then the amp module from the speaker enclosure, and finally the front panel.
  • Safety Inspections: Regular safety inspections of rigging components and cabinets are recommended. Any damaged or suspect parts should not be used. Annual independent test and inspection by a qualified inspector is required in many regions.
  • Warranty: Carvin offers a five-year warranty on TRx3000 series loudspeaker products (original owner, dated sales invoice required). This covers material and workmanship defects but excludes damage from accident, misuse, abuse, modification, neglect, shipping, failure to follow instructions, unauthorized repairs, or defaced serial numbers. Open voice coils or rubbing voice coils are not covered as they indicate excessive power use.
