Overview

The Carvin 412 Speaker Enclosures, available in Top and Bottom configurations, are designed for guitar players who require a powerful and visually imposing setup for large stages. These cabinets are equipped with four Carvin Vintage series VL12 12-inch speakers, delivering a robust 400 watts of output specifically tailored for lead guitar. A key feature of these enclosures is their versatility, offering both stereo and mono operation modes to suit different amplification needs.

For optimal performance, Carvin recommends several practices. Users should always ensure their amplifier is set to the correct speaker impedance. Positioning the enclosure at the audience's ear level helps to maximize sound projection. For enhanced bass response, placing the speaker on the floor or stacking it on another enclosure is advised. If more volume is desired, adding additional enclosures first and then increasing power is the recommended approach.

The rear connect plate on all Carvin speaker systems facilitates "Daisy Chaining," allowing one additional speaker system to be connected to the amplifier. However, it's crucial to recalculate the total speaker impedance when daisy chaining. For instance, if a speaker has an 8Ω impedance and another 8Ω speaker is daisy chained, the total impedance becomes 4Ω. Most power amplifiers are not designed for impedances lower than 4Ω and may "thermal protect" and shut down. If a 1/4" Phone Jack is used for the input, the XLR connector can be utilized for the extension speaker or vice-versa.

The system connect plate offers maximum versatility with a choice of 1/4" Phone and XLR connectors, as well as Stereo or Mono operation. In MONO mode, all speakers are connected together, while in STEREO mode, the left and right speakers are separated. To switch between modes, the rubber cap above the left phone jack must be removed. Using a small slot screwdriver, the switch is moved UP for MONO or DOWN for STEREO. To re-secure the rubber cap, it should be pushed hard into the center until it locks, preventing air leaks. The XLR connector wiring is Pin 1: GROUND, Pin 2: HOT (red binding post on the amp), and Pin 3: Not used.

In MONO mode, the switch should be moved to the UP position. The amplifier is then plugged into the MONO/LEFT connectors. The R connectors can be used for extension speakers, and the total impedance to the amplifier in MONO is 8Ω. For STEREO mode, the switch is moved to the DOWN position. Amplifiers are plugged into the LEFT and RIGHT connectors, and the remaining connectors are used for R & L extension speakers. The total impedance to each amplifier in STEREO is 4Ω.

Carvin offers standard 8-foot PH8 speaker cables with heavy-duty 16 gauge copper wire and 1/4" phone plugs for speaker-to-amp hookups. For amplifiers with XLR speaker output connectors, the heavy-duty Carvin 6-foot XLR XP6 speaker cable can be selected. It is important not to use shielded guitar or XLR mic cables, as a shielded cable can cause the amplifier to "thermal protect" and shut down.

Regarding maintenance, several precautions are advised to protect the speaker system. Users should not exceed the power rating marked on the rear connect plate. Carvin systems are conservatively rated, allowing for occasional peak power above the normal rating, but excessive power will damage the drivers. Exposure to water, moisture, and dust is harmful to drivers and can cause failures not covered under warranty.

Carvin loudspeakers are covered by a one-year limited warranty, which specifically covers original manufacturing defects. The warranty does not cover opened or burned voice coils, torn cones caused by improper packing or abuse, or damage from rain, moisture, etc. For warranty repairs, to reduce shipping costs, defective drivers can be removed from the enclosure and returned pre-paid by UPS. It is essential to include the user's address and a detailed description of the problem. If the problem is not covered under warranty, the driver will be returned COD for the cost of shipping and reconditioning. An extended warranty can be purchased before the original warranty expires.
