oil.
Allautomotivetypeairconditioningsystemsleaktosomeextent.Whenservicingthemitisimportantthatleakagebe
minimized.Muchofthenormalleakagecomesfromtheslowseepageofrefrigerantthroughtheexiblehoses.Other
commonsourcesofleaksareatjointsbetweentheexiblehoseandmetaltubingoratthreadedhoseconnections.
Theseareusuallymuchlargerleaksthanthenaturalseepagethroughthewallsofthehoseandarealmostalways
repairable.
ResearchbytheEPAhasfoundthatleakdetectioncanbedifcult,butexistinghalogenleakdetectionsystemsare
adequateforthemajortaskofndingandrepairingleakscausingcomplaints.Dyestainsarenotverysatisfactoryfor
ndingsmallleaks.
Newerelectronicleakdetectorsmayofferevenbetterleakdetectioncapabilities.However,nosinglemethodcannd
everyleak.Electronicleakdetectorsmaynotdetectleaksofallrefrigerants.Forexample,olderunitsdesignedto
detectR12maynotdetect
R134A.Besurethattheleakdetectoryouuseisstate-of-the-artandthatitisdesignedto
detecttherefrigerantinthesystemyouareservicing.
Serviceprofessionalsmustbeextremelydiligentintheirworktocorrectallpossibleleaks.Diligenceisessentialto
ensurethatnosmall,difcult-to-ndleaksgoundetected.
Beforeleavingajob,makeonelastleakcheck.Catchingaleakjustafterservicewillsaveaninconvenientand
expensivereturnvisit.
