This document describes the CASIO 2477, a multi-functional watch designed for users who need precise timekeeping, tide data, moon phase information, and alarm functions, all presented with a customizable backlight.
The CASIO 2477 operates across several modes, each dedicated to a specific set of features.
The Timekeeping Mode is the primary interface for viewing and setting the current time and date. It displays the AM/PM indicator, hour, minutes, day of the week, month, and day. A unique feature is the ability to view the current Moon age and a tide graph, which are dynamically updated based on the current time and date settings. The watch also allows for the customization of the "Multi Illuminator" backlight color, which uses LEDs to provide illumination in various hues.
Moon Age and Tide Graph: When in Timekeeping Mode, holding down button B will display the current Moon age. The tide graph shows tidal movements, and the Moon phase indicator displays the current Moon phase, both in accordance with the current date. It's crucial that the Timekeeping Mode's current date and time settings, along with Home Site data, are correctly configured for accurate Moon phase, tide graph, Moon age, and World Time Mode displays. The watch requires standard time settings, even if the Home Site area observes Daylight Saving Time (DST), which can be toggled on or off separately.
Setting Time and Date: To set the time and date, the user holds down button A until the seconds start flashing, indicating the setting screen. Pressing button C cycles through seconds, DST on/off, hour, minutes, year, month, day, GMT differential, longitude, and lunitidal interval (hours and minutes) settings. Buttons B or D are used to adjust the flashing value. Pressing button B while seconds are in the 30-59 range resets them to 00 and adds one to the minutes; for 00-29, minutes remain unchanged. The day of the week automatically updates with the date settings. The year can be set from 1995 to 2039, and the watch's full automatic calendar accounts for different month lengths and leap years, meaning the date rarely needs adjustment after initial setup, unless the battery is replaced.
Daylight Saving Time (DST): DST advances the time by one hour from Standard Time. To toggle DST, the user holds down button A in Timekeeping Mode until seconds flash, then presses button C to navigate to the DST On/Off setting. Button D toggles between DST ON and DST OFF. An indicator appears on the display when DST is active.
Home Site Data: Accurate Moon phase, Moon age, tide graph, and World Time Mode times depend on correctly configured Home Site data, which includes GMT differential, longitude, and lunitidal interval. The GMT differential is the time difference from Greenwich Mean Time. The lunitidal interval is the time between the Moon's transit over the meridian and the next high tide, displayed in hours and minutes. The manual provides lists of GMT differential, longitude, and lunitidal interval information for various locations.
Configuring Home Site Data: To configure Home Site data, the user holds down button A in Timekeeping Mode until seconds flash. Pressing button C seven times brings up the GMT differential setting screen, which is adjusted with button D. Subsequent presses of button C allow setting longitude (from 179°W to 180°E in 1-degree units) and lunitidal interval (hours and minutes), also adjusted with button D.
Backlight Color Customization: The backlight color can be changed by holding down button A in Timekeeping Mode until seconds flash, then pressing button C eleven times to reach the backlight color setting screen. Button D cycles through various color settings, including Pure Red, Forest Green, and Tangerine Yellow. Some settings, like "1-3," offer dynamic colors in Timekeeping Mode based on the current tide reading (e.g., Pure Red at spring tide, Tangerine Yellow at intermediate tide, Forest Green at neap tide).
12-hour/24-hour Timekeeping: Pressing button D in Timekeeping Mode toggles between 12-hour and 24-hour formats. The 12-hour format uses "P" for PM and "A" for AM, while the 24-hour format displays times from 0:00 to 23:59 without an indicator. This setting applies across all modes.
The World Time Mode displays the current time for 44 sites (27 time zones) worldwide, including 10 famous surfing points and one user-configurable surfing point. It also shows the Moon phase for the selected time zone.
Viewing World Time: Pressing button D scrolls site codes to the east, and button B scrolls to the west. Surfing points are indicated by a specific symbol, and the user site by "ORG."
DST in World Time: Each World Time site has its own DST setting. To toggle DST for a displayed site, the user holds down button A until "DST OFF" or "DST ON" flashes, then presses button D to switch. This setting only affects the currently displayed site code.
Editing Surfing Point Data: The watch comes pre-programmed with lunitidal interval data for 10 surfing points. To change this data, the user scrolls to a surfing point, holds down button A until "DST OFF" or "DST ON" flashes, then presses button C to navigate to the lunitidal interval (hours and minutes) settings, which are adjusted with button D. DST can also be toggled here.
Configuring a User Surfing Point: A user-defined surfing point ("ORG") can be configured by inputting its GMT differential, longitude, and lunitidal interval. The process is similar to editing surfing point data, involving scrolling to "ORG," holding down button A, and then navigating through the settings with button C and adjusting with button D.
The Tide Data Mode allows viewing tide and Moon phase information for a specific date and time.
Viewing Tide Data: In this mode, buttons D (+) and B (-) change the time by one hour to view the corresponding tide. Pressing button D at 11:00 p.m. advances to midnight, but the date remains unchanged.
Specifying Site and Date: To view tide data for a specific site and date, the user holds down button A until the site code flashes. Pressing button C cycles through site code, year, month, and day settings. Button D is used to adjust these values. The year can be set from 1995 to 2039. The selected site code and date will be displayed upon re-entering the Tide Data Mode.
The Alarm Mode allows setting a daily alarm and an hourly time signal.
Setting Alarm Time: To set the alarm, the user holds down button A until the hour setting flashes. Pressing button C cycles through hour, minutes, and site code settings. Button D adjusts the values. The alarm can be set for the current Home Site or a selected World Time site. When setting for a World Time site, that site must first be selected in World Time Mode. The alarm automatically turns on when the setting screen is accessed.
Daily Alarm Operation: The alarm sounds for about 20 seconds daily at the preset time or until any button is pressed. It automatically resets to its starting value after sounding. Changing the Home Site or World Time site after setting an alarm will also change the site selected in Alarm Mode.
Testing the Alarm: In Alarm Mode, holding down button D will sound the alarm.
Turning Alarm and Hourly Time Signal On/Off: Pressing button B in Alarm Mode cycles through settings for "Both ON," "Both OFF," "Alarm only," and "Hourly Time Signal only."
The Countdown Timer Mode allows setting a timer from 1 to 60 minutes, with an alarm sounding when it reaches zero. The default start time is 15 minutes.
Using the Countdown Timer: Pressing button D starts the timer. When it reaches zero, an alarm sounds for 10 seconds or until any button is pressed. The timer automatically resets to its starting value. Pressing button D during a countdown pauses it; pressing D again resumes it. The watch beeps during the last five minutes. To completely stop the timer, pause it with button D, then press button A to return to the starting value.
Setting Countdown Start Time: To set the countdown start time, hold down button A until the minute setting flashes. Press button D to increase the setting, then press button A to exit.
Auto Return Features: If a setting screen is left with flashing digits for two or three minutes without operation, the watch automatically saves any settings made and exits the screen.
Data and Setting Scrolling: Buttons B and D are used to scroll through data in various modes and screens. Holding these buttons down during scrolling accelerates the process.
Backlight Illumination: The backlight uses an LED and a light guide panel to illuminate the entire display for easy reading in the dark. Pressing button B illuminates the display for about three seconds. The illumination may be difficult to see under direct sunlight. The backlight automatically turns off when an alarm sounds.
Battery Life: Frequent use of the backlight shortens battery life.
Calendar: The watch's built-in full automatic calendar accounts for different month lengths and leap years, so the date rarely needs adjustment after initial setup, except after battery replacement.
Accuracy: The watch performs rough calculations for Moon age using integer values, which can result in a margin of error of ±2 days compared to the actual Moon age. For accurate tide graph readings, the lunitidal interval must be correctly specified for the current location.
