Frequent display illumination can run down the battery quickly and require charging.
The following guidelines give an idea of the charging time required to recover from a
single illumination operation.
Approximately 5 minutes exposure to bright sunlight coming in through a window
Approximately 8 hours exposure to indoor fl uorescent lighting

The watch continues to operate, even when it is not exposed to light. Leaving the
watch in the dark can cause the battery to run down, which will result in some watch
functions to be disabled. If the battery goes dead, you will have to re-configure watch
settings after recharging. To ensure normal watch operation, be sure to keep it
exposed to light as much as possible.

Getting Acquainted
Congratulations upon your selection of this CASIO watch. To get the most out of your
purchase, be sure to read this manual carefully.
Be sure to keep all user documentation handy for future reference.
Keep the watch exposed to bright light
The electricity generated by the solar cell of the watch is
stored by a rechargeable battery. Leaving or using the
watch where it is not exposed to light causes the battery
to run down. Make sure the watch is exposed to light as
much as possible.
When you are not wearing the watch on your wrist,
position the face so it is pointed at a source of bright
light.
You should try to keep the watch outside of your sleeve
as much as possible. Charging is reduced significantly if
the face is covered only partially.

Overview

This document is the operation guide for a CASIO watch, model 3220. It provides detailed instructions on how to use, maintain, and troubleshoot the watch's various functions.

Function Description

The CASIO watch, model 3220, is a solar-powered timepiece with a range of functions including:

  • Timekeeping: Displays the current time (hour, minute, second), year, month, and day. It supports both 12-hour and 24-hour formats and includes an auto-calendar function that accounts for leap years.
  • Radio-controlled Atomic Timekeeping: Automatically receives time calibration signals from transmitters in various regions (Japan, North America, Europe, China) to ensure accurate timekeeping. The watch can receive signals up to six times a day.
  • World Time: Displays the current time in 48 cities (31 time zones) around the world, with support for Daylight Saving Time (DST).
  • Alarms: Features five daily alarms and an hourly time signal. Alarms can be set to sound for 10 seconds or until stopped.
  • Stopwatch: Measures elapsed time, split times, and two finishes, with a measuring capacity of 23 hours, 59 minutes, 59.99 seconds.
  • Countdown Timer: Functions as a 24-hour countdown timer, with an alarm that sounds when the countdown reaches zero.
  • Illumination: An EL (electro-luminescent) panel provides illumination for easy reading in the dark. It includes an auto light switch that automatically turns on the illumination when the watch is angled towards the face.
  • Battery Power Indicator and Recovery Indicator: Displays the current status of the rechargeable battery's power level and indicates when the watch is in a power-saving state or when the battery needs to recover.
  • Power Saving: Automatically enters a power-saving state when the watch is left in the dark for a certain period, turning off the display to conserve power.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Power Source: Solar cell and a rechargeable battery (secondary battery). The watch is designed to operate for long periods without needing battery replacement, provided it receives sufficient light exposure.
  • Time Calibration Signal Reception:
    • Japan: Fukushima (JJY40/JJY60) and Fukuoka/Saga (JJY40/JJY60) at 40 kHz and 60 kHz.
    • North America: Fort Collins (WWVB) at 60 kHz.
    • Europe: Mainflingen (DCF77) at 77.5 kHz and Anthorn (MSF) at 60 kHz.
    • China: Shangqiu City (BPC) at 68 kHz.
    • Automatic reception up to six times a day. Manual reception is also possible.
  • Water Resistance: The watch is water-resistant, suitable for daily use, hand washing, rain, and showering. It is not recommended for scuba diving or other types of diving that require air tanks.
  • Operating Temperature: The watch is designed to operate within a temperature range of -10°C to 60°C (14°F to 140°F).
  • Accuracy: When not receiving a time calibration signal, the watch maintains an accuracy of ±15 seconds per month.
  • Battery Life (approximate):
    • Without exposure to light after full charge: 10 months (normal operation) or 26 months (with Power Saving function enabled).
  • Illumination Duration: The EL backlight can be set to illuminate for 1.5 seconds or 3 seconds.
  • Display: Digital display with electro-luminescent backlight.

Usage Features

  • Module Number: 3220, located on the case back.
  • Button Operations: The watch has multiple buttons (A, B, C, D) for navigating modes, setting functions, and adjusting values. A "Button Operation Tone" can be enabled or disabled.
  • Mode Navigation: The "C" button is used to cycle through the different modes: Timekeeping, World Time, Alarm, Stopwatch, and Countdown Timer.
  • Setting Time and Date: Time and date settings can be adjusted manually or automatically via time calibration signal reception. The home city must be set correctly for accurate timekeeping and signal reception.
  • Daylight Saving Time (DST): DST can be enabled or disabled automatically or manually for the home city and World Time cities.
  • Power Saving Function: The watch automatically enters a power-saving state when left in the dark. The display goes blank, but the internal timekeeping continues. Pressing any button or exposing the watch to light restores the display.
  • Auto Light Switch: This feature automatically turns on the illumination when the watch is angled towards the face, making it easy to read in low-light conditions. It can be enabled or disabled.
  • Signal Reception Indicator: Displays the strength of the received time calibration signal (L1, L2, L3) or indicates no reception (NO).
  • Checking Last Signal Reception Result: The watch stores and displays the time and date of the last successful time calibration signal reception.
  • Battery Level Indicator: A five-level indicator shows the current battery charge. Level 5 indicates a low battery and triggers a "Charge Alert."
  • Charging Guide: Provides approximate exposure times to various light sources (outdoor sunlight, daylight through a window, fluorescent light) required for different battery levels.

Maintenance Features

  • Charging: To ensure optimal performance, expose the watch to bright light regularly. Avoid leaving the watch in a dark place for extended periods.
  • Cleaning:
    • Resin Band: Clean with a soft, dry cloth. If very dirty, wash with water and a mild neutral detergent, then dry thoroughly.
    • Metal Band: Clean with a soft toothbrush or similar tool and a mild neutral detergent. Wipe with a soft, absorbent cloth.
    • Leather Band: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water and detergents.
    • Case: Clean with a soft cloth and water.
  • Water Resistance: While the watch is water-resistant, avoid operating buttons underwater. After exposure to saltwater, rinse the watch with fresh water and dry it thoroughly.
  • Temperature: Avoid exposing the watch to extreme temperatures (below -10°C or above 60°C) for extended periods, as this can affect accuracy and battery life.
  • Magnetism: Keep the watch away from strong magnetic fields, as they can cause malfunctions.
  • Electrostatic Charge: Avoid strong electrostatic charge, as it can cause display malfunctions.
  • Chemicals: Avoid contact with gasoline, paint thinner, alcohol, cosmetics, and other chemicals, as they can damage the watch's resin components.
  • Band Replacement: If the band becomes dirty, worn, or damaged, contact your original retailer or a CASIO service center for replacement.
  • Rechargeable Battery: The rechargeable battery is a special component. Do not attempt to replace it yourself. Contact a CASIO service center for battery replacement.
  • Regular Inspections: It is recommended to have the watch inspected every two or three years by a CASIO service center to ensure proper functioning and water resistance.
  • Skin Irritation: If you experience skin irritation, remove the watch immediately and consult a medical professional. Ensure the band is not too tight and is kept clean.
