Do you have a question about the Casio FR-1011S and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document is an operation manual for the CASIO FR-1011S and FR-1211S electronic printing calculators.

Function Description:

The calculators are described as advanced, precise electronic units with Digitron visual displays, capable of solving and providing printed records for all types of business calculations. They feature a "stop-start" motor system for quiet printing, and a heavy-duty, adding-machine-like keyboard designed for quick blind-touch operations. The manual aims to help users understand the various control keys and functions through simple examples.

Key Functions and Controls:

  • Power Switch (1): Moves to "ON" for calculation, displaying "0." to indicate readiness. "ON" position activates only the display. "PRINT" position activates the high-speed lineprinter, printing each keyboard entry, result, and storage with operational symbols. "ITEM" position activates an item counter, printing the number of added/subtracted items with the answer when the * or G* key is pressed. Pressing * prints the number of times the key was pressed.
  • Numeral, Two-Zero, and Decimal Point Keys (2): Used to enter numerals and decimal places in logical sequence.
  • Plus/Equal Key (3): Adds one number and obtains a product or quotient, transferring it to the total register.
  • Minus/Equal Key (4): Subtracts one number and obtains a product or quotient, transferring it to the total register, especially for negative figures.
  • Multiplication Key (5): Enters multiplicand or constant multiplier by pressing twice.
  • Division Key (6): Enters dividend or constant divisor by pressing twice.
  • Equal Key (7): Obtains the answer in multiplication/division operations.
  • Sub-Total/Non-Add/Answer-Print Key (8): Prints a sub-total (intermediate result) in addition/subtraction. Prints entries like dates or code numbers with a '#' symbol without affecting other registers. Prints only the answer (intermediate or final) when the power switch is at "ON."
  • Total Key (9): Prints a total and transfers it to the grand total register.
  • Grand Total Key (10): Prints the grand total and clears the grand total register.
  • Memory Plus (Minus) Key (11): Accumulates an entry and/or result into memory positively (negatively). Automatically accumulates product/quotient into memory positively (negatively).
  • Memory Recall Key (12): Recalls accumulated total in memory without clearing.
  • Memory Recall/Clear Key (13): Recalls accumulated total in memory and clears it simultaneously.
  • Percent Key (14): Performs percentage calculations, including regular percentages, add-ons/discounts, ratios, and increase/decrease calculations.
  • Clear Key (15): Clears keyboard entry for correction. Clears multiplication/division operations when pressed after * or G*.
  • Clear All Key (16): Clears the entire machine except the memory register and releases an overflow check.
  • Decimal Mode Selector (17):
    • F (Float): Decimal floats, and underflow system protects significant digits in all calculations.
    • CUT: Answer is automatically cut off at the decimal place indicated by the decimal place selector.
    • UP (Round-up): Answer is automatically rounded up.
    • 5/4 (Round-off): Answer is rounded off.
    • Note: Entries are cut off or rounded off in addition/subtraction. Final results in multiplication/division are cut off or rounded off, while entry and intermediate results are in floating mode.
  • Decimal Place Selector (18): Prefixes decimal places at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 6. At "ADD 2" position, numbers with decimal places can be entered without pressing the . key in addition/subtraction, and the decimal point is automatically displayed/printed at 2 decimal positions (when decimal mode selector is set to "CUT," "UP," or "5/4").
  • Paper Feed Key (19): Advances the paper tape.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Abilities: 4 basic functions, constants for multiplication/division, sub-total/total/grand total, item counting, ADD mode calculations, memory calculations, percentage calculations, and various kinds of practical calculations.
  • Capacity: 12 digits (FR-1211S), 10 digits (FR-1011S).
  • Decimal Point: Full floating, and fixed (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 6) with round-off, round-up, or cut-off.
  • ADD Mode: Decimal point is fixed at 2 positions.
  • Negative Number: Printed and/or displayed by minus (-) sign.
  • Overflow Check: Indicated by an "E" sign, locking the calculator.
  • Display: Digitron tube panel.
  • Main Component: One chip LSI.
  • Ambient Temperature Range: 0°C - 40°C (32°F - 104°F).
  • Power Consumption: 9.5 W.
  • Power Supply: AC 100/120/220 or 240 V (±10V), 50/60 Hz (Fixed).
  • Dimensions: 78mm (W) x 193mm (H) x 302mm (D) (3 1/16" W x 7 5/8" H x 11 7/8" D) excluding roll-holder.
  • Weight: 1.3 kg (2.8 lbs).

Usage Features:

  • Buffer Register: Retains up to 10 key-ins (numeral entries or function commands) for fast operation, even when the previous function is being processed.
  • Motor "Stop-Start" System: Printer remains inactive when power is on, but prints each entry and result when a function command key is pressed, then stops until printing is required again.
  • Automatic Comma Marker: Groups large figures in three's for easier reading on both print-tape and visual display.
  • Overflow Check: Indicated by an "E" sign, stopping further calculation. Released by pressing the CA key. Occurs when an entry exceeds 12 digits, the integer part of an answer exceeds 12 digits, or an accumulated total in memory exceeds 12 digits.
  • Memory Protection: Accumulated totals in memory are retained and recalled in floating mode even if overflow occurs.
  • Constant Calculations: The constant sign "K" appears in the lower left-hand corner of the readout when a number is set as a constant for multiplication/division, squares/powers, reciprocals, and percentage calculations. The constant is released by a normal multiplication/division operation or by pressing the * or G* key.
  • Direct Memory Access: Numbers (entries or results) can be transferred to memory positively or negatively multiple times.
  • Correction Features:
    • C key clears mis-entered numbers.
    • CA key clears wrong entries/commands after a command key is pressed, allowing a restart.
    • Correction of commands between multiplication and division is done by successively pressing the correct command key.
    • During grand total in addition/subtraction: + or - clears wrong entries/commands before transferring to grand total. If a mis-operation is found after transfer, subtract the same number from the grand total and re-operate.
    • During accumulated total in memory: CA clears working registers before accumulation. If a mis-operation is found after accumulation, M+ or M- adds or subtracts the same number to/from memory and re-operates.

Maintenance Features:

  • Roll-Paper Loading: Cut paper to a clean end, insert into slot (1), press FEED until paper appears at the back of the paper-cutter (2), insert roll-holders (3) into brackets, and set roll-paper onto the holder. Paper tape should be advanced by FEED key when cutting; never pull by hand to avoid malfunctions. Anti-dust type roll-paper is recommended for legible printing.
  • Ink Roller Change: The printer uses a disposable ink roller (cartridge type). Replace the ink roller with a new one (Casio ink cartridge IR-72) if impressions are too light. To change, open the printer cover (Fig. 1), remove the old ink roller by pulling it up (Fig. 2), install a new one (Fig. 3), and replace the cover. Do not fill the ink roller with fluid ink as it may run or clog the printer.
  • General Care: Place the calculator on a level surface, away from constant sunlight. Connect the power cord properly. Avoid sharing AC outlets with other electric appliances to prevent noise interference. Always use the dust cover when the calculator is off. Do not cover or place paper on the machine during operation. Avoid spilling coffee or other liquids to prevent circuit damage.
  • Servicing: If the unit needs servicing, it is recommended to keep removable accessories (roll holders, dust cover, AC cord) to prevent loss.
