Using the Casio fx-83 Calculator
The Casio fx-83 calculator is currently widely available and is highly
recommended for use by engineering students at Levels 2 and 3.
The calculator has over 250 functions and it incorporates a ‘natural
display’ that supports input and output using mathematical notation,
such as fractions, roots, etc.
INITIALISING THE CALCULATOR
The keystrokes shown in Figure 1 can be used to return the calculator’s settings and modes
to their initial (default) values. Note that this operation will also clear any data from the
calculator’s memory. The fx-83’s Clear menu is shown in Figure 2.
SETTING THE CALCULATOR MODE
The fx-83 provides three different calculation modes; COMP is used for general calculations,
STAT is used for statistical calculations, and TABLE is used to generate a table of values
based on a given expression. For Level 2, you will only need to use the COMP mode. The
Mode menu is shown in Figure 3 and the keystrokes required to set the calculator to the
COMP mode are shown in Figure 4.

Overview

The Casio fx-83GT PLUS is a scientific calculator highly recommended for engineering students at Levels 2 and 3, featuring over 250 functions. It incorporates a "natural display" that supports input and output using mathematical notation, such as fractions and roots, enhancing its utility for complex calculations.

Function Description:

The fx-83GT PLUS offers three primary calculation modes:

  • COMP (Compute) Mode: This is the general calculation mode, suitable for a wide range of mathematical operations. It is the default mode for most basic engineering calculations.
  • STAT (Statistics) Mode: Designed for statistical calculations, allowing users to perform various statistical analyses.
  • TABLE Mode: This mode generates a table of values based on a given expression, useful for analyzing function behavior.

The calculator also supports different display and input/output modes:

  • MathIO Mode: This is the default mode when the calculator is first powered on. It allows for input and output using mathematical notation, displaying expressions and results as they would appear in a textbook.
  • LineIO Mode: A more conventional line-based input/output mode, which may be preferred for certain basic engineering calculations.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Display: Natural display supporting mathematical notation (fractions, roots, etc.).
  • Functions: Over 250 built-in functions.
  • Memory: The calculator has memory for storing values.
  • Angle Units: Supports degrees (Deg), radians (Rad), and grads (Gra) as units for angles.
  • Display Precision: Allows setting a fixed number of decimal places (FIX) or a fixed number of significant digits (SCI) for results.
  • Input/Output Modes: MathIO and LineIO.

Usage Features:

Initializing the Calculator:

To return the calculator's settings and modes to their initial (default) values and clear all memory data, use the following keystrokes: SHIFT -> 9 (Clear) -> 3 (All) -> = (Yes) -> AC (Reset all) The "Clear?" menu offers options: 1: Setup, 2: Memory, 3: ALL. Selecting 3: ALL performs a complete reset.

Setting the Calculator Mode:

To switch between calculation modes (COMP, STAT, TABLE), use the Mode menu. For Level 2 engineering, the COMP mode is primarily used. To set the calculator to COMP mode: MODE -> 1 (COMP) The Mode menu displays: 1: COMP, 2: STAT, 3: TABLE.

Configuring the Calculator Setup (LineIO Mode):

The Setup menu controls how calculations are performed and how expressions are entered and displayed. To change the input/output mode from MathIO to LineIO: SHIFT -> SETUP -> 2 (LineIO) The Setup menu provides options for:

  • 1: MthIO (Mathematical Input/Output)
  • 2: LineIO (Line Input/Output)
  • 3: Deg (Degrees)
  • 4: Rad (Radians)
  • 5: Gra (Grads)
  • 6: Fix (Fixed decimal places)
  • 7: Sci (Scientific notation/significant digits)
  • 8: Norm (Normal display format)

Display Symbols and Their Meanings:

The calculator display uses various symbols to indicate its current state or specific functions:

  • S: Indicates the keypad has been shifted (SHIFT key pressed). It disappears after a key press.
  • A: Indicates alpha input mode (ALPHA key pressed). It disappears after a key press.
  • M: Indicates a value has been stored in memory.
  • STO: Appears when the calculator is waiting for a variable name input to store a value (after SHIFT RCL STO).
  • RCL: Appears when the calculator is waiting for a variable name input to recall a value (after RCL).
  • STAT: Indicates the calculator is in statistical mode.
  • D: Indicates the default unit for angles is degrees.
  • R: Indicates the default unit for angles is radians.
  • G: Indicates the default unit for angles is grads.
  • FIX: Indicates the calculator is set to display a fixed number of decimal places.
  • SCI: Indicates the calculator is set to display a fixed number of significant digits.
  • Math: Indicates the calculator is set to the maths input/output mode (MathIO).
  • Up/Down Arrows: Indicate that calculation history is available and can be replayed, or that there is more data above or below the current display.
  • Disp: Indicates the display currently shows an intermediate result of a multi-statement calculation.

Maintenance Features:

  • Reset Functionality: The calculator includes a comprehensive reset function (SHIFT 9 3 = AC) that clears all settings and memory data, effectively returning it to its factory default state. This is useful for troubleshooting or preparing the calculator for a new user.
  • Memory Management: Users can clear specific memory contents or all memory data, which is important for maintaining data integrity and freeing up space.

The Casio fx-83GT PLUS is a versatile and robust tool designed to meet the computational needs of engineering students, providing a blend of advanced functionality and user-friendly features.
