Getting Acquainted
Congratulations upon your selection of this CASIO watch. To get the most out of your
purchase, be sure to read this manual carefully.
This watch does not have a city code that corresponds to the UTC offset of –3.5
hours. Because of this, the radio-controlled atomic timekeeping function will not
display the correct time for Newfoundland, Canada.
Keep the watch exposed to bright light
The electricity generated by the solar cell of the watch is
stored by a rechargeable battery. Leaving or using the
watch where it is not exposed to light causes the battery
to run down. Make sure the watch is exposed to light as
much as possible.
When you are not wearing the watch on your wrist,
position the face so it is pointed at a source of bright
light.
You should try to keep the watch outside of your sleeve
as much as possible. Charging is reduced significantly if
the face is covered only partially.

The watch continues to operate, even when it is not exposed to light. Leaving the
watch in the dark can cause the battery to run down, which will result in some watch
functions to be disabled. If the battery goes dead, you will have to re-configure watch
settings after recharging. To ensure normal watch operation, be sure to keep it
exposed to light as much as possible.
The actual level at which some functions are disabled depends on the watch model.
Frequent display illumination can run down the battery quickly and require charging.
The following guidelines give an idea of the charging time required to recover from a
single illumination operation.
Approximately 5 minutes exposure to bright sunlight coming in through a window
Approximately about 8 hours exposure to indoor fluorescent lighting
Be sure to read “Power Supply” for important information you need to know
when exposing the watch to bright light.
If the display of the watch is blank...
If the display of the watch is blank, it means that the watch’s Power Saving function
has turned off the display to conserve power.
See “Power Saving Function” for more information.

Radio-controlled Atomic Timekeeping
This watch receives a time calibration signal and updates its time setting accordingly.
This watch is designed to pick up the time calibration signals transmitted in Germany
(Mainflingen), England (Anthorn), the United States (Fort Collins), China (Shangqiu),
and Japan (Fukushima, Fukuoka/Saga).
Current Time Setting
This watch adjusts its time setting automatically in accordance with a time calibration
signal. You also can perform a manual procedure to set the time and date, when
necessary.
The first thing you should do after purchasing this watch is to specify your
Home City (the city where you normally will use the watch). For more
information, see “To specify your Home City”.
When using the watch outside the areas covered by the time signal transmitters, you
will have to adjust the current time setting manually as required. See “Timekeeping”
for more information about manual time settings.
The U.S. time calibration signal can be picked up by the watch while in North
America. The term “North America” in this manual refers to the area that consists of
Canada, the continental United States, and Mexico.
As of March 2010, China does not use Daylight Saving Time (DST). If China does go
to the Daylight Saving Time system in the future, some functions of this watch may
no longer operate correctly.
Using this watch in a country covered by a time calibration that is different from the
countries it supports may result in incorrect time indication due to local application of
summer time, etc.
To specify your Home City
1. In the Timekeeping Mode, hold down A for about three
seconds. You can release the button after ADJ
appears on the display.
At this time, 12H” (12-hour timekeeping) or 24H” (24-
hour timekeeping) also will be flashing on the display.
2. Press B.
The city code of the current Home City will flash,
which indicates the setting screen.
3. Press C (east) to select the city code you want to use
as your Home City.

Overview

The CASIO Operation Guide 5135 describes a radio-controlled atomic timekeeping watch. This watch is designed to receive time calibration signals from transmitters in Germany (Mainflingen), England (Anthorn), the United States (Fort Collins), China (Shangqiu), and Japan (Fukushima, Fukuoka/Saga), allowing it to automatically update its time settings. It does not support a UTC offset of -3.5 hours, meaning it cannot display the correct time for Newfoundland, Canada.

Function Description:

The watch features both digital and analog timekeeping. The analog time is synchronized with the digital time and adjusts automatically when the digital time is changed, whether manually or via signal reception.

Modes:

  • Timekeeping Mode: Displays the current time, date, and day of the week. It's the primary mode for setting the Home City, adjusting DST, and performing manual time/date settings.
  • Battery/Receive Mode: Shows the current battery level and the status of the last successful signal reception.
  • World Time Mode: Displays the current time in 29 cities (29 time zones) around the world. Times are synchronized with the Timekeeping Mode.
  • Alarm Mode: Allows configuration of five daily alarms and the Hourly Time Signal. Alarms sound for 10 seconds, and the Hourly Time Signal beeps every hour on the hour.
  • Countdown Timer Mode: A timer that can be set from 1 minute to 100 minutes.
  • Stopwatch Mode: Measures elapsed time with a unit of 1/10 second, up to a capacity of 59 minutes, 59.9 seconds.

Key Features:

  • Radio-controlled Atomic Timekeeping: Receives time calibration signals up to 6 times a day (5 times for the Chinese signal) to automatically update time. Manual receive is also possible.
  • Home City Setting: Users must specify their Home City to ensure correct time calibration signal reception. The watch automatically receives signals from the applicable transmitter based on the selected Home City.
  • Daylight Saving Time (DST): Supports Auto DST (AT), which automatically switches between standard time and summer time based on calibration data. Users can also manually turn DST on or off. Auto DST is available for specific city codes (LON, PAR, ATH, TYO, HNL, ANC, LAX, DEN, CHI, NYC).
  • Power Saving Function: When enabled, the watch enters a sleep state in the dark to conserve power. The second hand stops, and the display goes blank after 60-70 minutes in the dark. After 6-7 days in the dark, all hands stop, and auto receive, beeper tone, illumination, and display are disabled.
  • Illumination: An LED (light-emitting diode) illuminates the watch face for easy reading in the dark. It turns off automatically when an alarm sounds.
  • Button Operation Tone: Can be turned on or off. Alarms and Hourly Time Signal still operate normally even if the button tone is off.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Accuracy at normal temperature: ± 15 seconds a month (without signal reception).
  • Digital Timekeeping: Hour, minutes, seconds, a.m./p.m., day, day of the week. 12-hour and 24-hour formats are switchable. Full Auto-calendar pre-programmed from 2000 to 2099.
  • Analog Timekeeping: Hour, minutes (hand moves every 10 seconds), seconds.
  • Receivable Time Calibration Signals:
    • Mainflingen, Germany (DCF77, 77.5 kHz)
    • Anthorn, England (MSF, 60.0 kHz)
    • Fort Collins, Colorado, USA (WWVB, 60.0 kHz)
    • Fukushima, Japan (JJY, 40.0 kHz)
    • Fukuoka/Saga, Japan (JJY, 60.0 kHz)
    • Shangqiu City, China (BPC, 68.5 kHz)
  • Countdown Timer: Input range: 1 minute to 100 minutes (1-minute increments).
  • Power Supply: Solar cell and one rechargeable battery.
  • Approximate battery operating time: 4 months (from full charge to Level 4) under specific conditions (not exposed to light, internal timekeeping, display on 18 hours/day, sleep state 6 hours/day, 1 illumination operation/day, 10 seconds alarm operation/day, 4 minutes signal reception/day).

Usage Features:

  • Charging: The watch is powered by a solar cell and a rechargeable battery. It must be exposed to bright light to charge. Leaving it in the dark will run down the battery, potentially disabling functions. Charging is significantly reduced if the face is partially covered.
    • Approximately 5 minutes in bright sunlight (through a window) or 8 hours in indoor fluorescent lighting are needed to recover from a single illumination operation.
  • Signal Reception: For optimal reception, position the watch with its 12 o'clock side pointing towards a window, especially at night. Avoid metal objects nearby. Reception can be difficult or impossible inside buildings, vehicles, near appliances, construction sites, airports, high-tension power lines, or behind mountains. Signal reception is generally better at night.
  • Manual Receive: Initiated by holding down the button in Timekeeping or Battery/Receive Mode. Takes 3 to 16 minutes.
  • Home Position Adjustment: If the analog time does not match the digital time due to magnetism or impact, the hands can be manually adjusted to their correct home positions (12 o'clock for second hand, 12 o'clock for hour/minute hands).
  • Scrolling: The button is used to scroll through data in various modes and setting screens. Holding it down enables high-speed scrolling.
  • Auto Return: The watch automatically exits setting screens if no operation is performed for about two or three minutes.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Level Indicator: Displays the current battery level (HI, MID, LO, CHARGE, ALL OFF). Different levels correspond to different function availability (e.g., Level 1 & 2: all functions enabled; Level 3 & 4: some or all functions disabled; Level 5: all functions disabled, requiring recharge).
  • Reception Results: The watch displays "GET" for successful reception and "ERROR" for failed reception. A "receive successful indicator" (RCVD) appears after a successful reception and remains for the rest of the day.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common signal reception problems, such as incorrect Home City settings, manual time changes, or physical obstructions.
  • Battery Replacement: If the battery power level drops to Level 5 or the battery is replaced, the Home City setting reverts to the initial default (TYO), requiring re-configuration.
  • Calendar: The watch's full automatic calendar handles different month lengths and leap years from 2000 to 2099.
  • Illumination Precautions: Frequent use of illumination shortens battery operating time. Illumination may be difficult to see under direct sunlight.
