Overview

This document is a pump manual for the Aquaspeed series of centrifugal water pumps, manufactured by Waterco Europe Ltd and distributed by Certikin International Ltd. The manual provides essential information for the installation, operation, and maintenance of these pumps, which are designed for pre-filtering and re-circulation of water in swimming pools.

Function Description

The Aquaspeed pump is a centrifugal water pump specifically designed for the pre-filtering and re-circulation of water in swimming pools. Its primary function is to move water through the filtration system, ensuring clean and clear pool water. The pump is equipped with a hair and lint pot bowl to collect debris before it reaches the pump impeller, protecting the pump from damage.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Models: Aquaspeed pumps are available in various horsepower (hp) ratings: 0.50hp, 0.75hp, 1hp, 1.5hp, 2hp, and 3hp.
  • Fluid Temperature: The permissible operating temperature for the pump is between 0°C and 40°C (32°F and 104°F). Operating outside this range can cause damage.
  • Electrical Requirements:
    • Single Phase Motors: Equipped with a built-in thermal overload switch.
    • Three Phase Motors: Require a starter switch or magnetic starter with correctly sized overload protection in addition to a fused disconnect switch. Rotation must be checked and adjusted if necessary (clockwise when viewed from the motor end fan cover).
    • Wiring: All electrical wiring must be carried out by a licensed electrician in accordance with local electrical regulations. A circuit breaker is required for each pump to provide full disconnection in all poles under overvoltage category III conditions.
    • Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker: For swimming pool or pond installations, a 30mA rated earth leakage circuit breaker is mandatory.
    • Power Cord Quality:
      • For models greater than 1Kw input: 245 IEC66 (HO7RN-F) quality.
      • For models less than 1Kw input: 245 IEC57 (HO5RN-F) quality.
    • Motor Protection: Motor protection corresponding to the nominal current of the motor (found on the rating plate) must be installed.
    • Contact Distance: A contact distance of 3mm per pole is required for permanent installation of both three-phase and single-phase units to isolate the pump from mains power.
  • Installation Clearance: The pump motor cooling fan must have a minimum clearance of 150mm for proper ventilation.
  • Suction Line: The suction line should not be smaller than the unions supplied with the pump and should have as few bends or elbows as possible, without air traps.

Usage Features

  • Priming: The pump is designed to prime and re-prime automatically, provided the hair and lint pot bowl is full of water and there is sufficient supply from the suction point. If water is lost from the bowl, it must be refilled manually by removing the clear lid and pouring water in. The pump should start delivering water within a maximum of 2 minutes after starting.
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Children should not be permitted to play with the product.
    • Before working on the motor, the electrical source must be switched off.
    • Running the pump dry can rapidly damage mechanical seals, requiring replacement. Ensure adequate water in the hair and lint pot bowl before startup.
    • All suction and discharge valves must be open before starting the pump to prevent damage.
    • High suction lift or long suction lines can affect pump performance and priming time.
    • Always ensure the mains power is switched off before disconnecting electrical connections or performing any work on the pump.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a comprehensive troubleshooting section covering common issues such as:
    • Pump not priming (suction air leak, no water, closed valves/blocked lines).
    • Motor not running (no power, jammed pump).
    • Low flow (dirty filter/strainer, suction air leak, closed valves/blocked lines).
    • Motor running hot (low/incorrect voltage, direct sunlight, poor ventilation).
    • Noisy pump operation (worn bearing, air leak, suction blockage, foreign matter in impeller, cavitations).
    • Motor overload cuts out (improper connection, low voltage, binding in pump, wrong size impeller).

Maintenance Features

  • Strainer Basket Cleaning: The strainer basket in the hair and lint pot bowl should be inspected and cleaned regularly. This involves:
    1. Removing the lid and lifting out the basket.
    2. Removing debris and hosing off the basket with clean water.
    3. Inspecting the lid gasket, lubricating it with silicone-based grease if needed, or replacing it if damaged.
    4. Replacing the strainer.
    5. Re-priming the hair and lint pot bowl.
    6. Correctly locating the o-ring.
    7. Replacing the lid, tightening by hand only.
    8. Switching on the pump.
  • Winterization: In climates prone to frost or freezing, the pump should be protected from damage. If not used during winter, it should be drained completely using the provided drain plug. It is recommended to remove the pump and store it in a dry location.
  • Reactivation: Before reactivating the pump, ensure all seals and o-rings are in operational condition, re-grease if necessary, and replace if unsure of their condition. Also, check that the motor shaft moves freely.
  • Regular Verifications:
    • Correct attachments of mechanical parts and support screws.
    • Correct position, attachment, and condition of supply cables and insulating parts.
    • Motor temperature (stop and repair if irregular).
    • Pump vibration (stop and repair if irregular).
  • Professional Servicing: All electrical work and significant repairs must be carried out by a qualified electrician or authorized service agent to maintain warranty validity and ensure safety. The manual emphasizes that maintenance tasks should only be performed by qualified authorized persons who have carefully read the instructions.
