Model 990LM
Garage Door Opener
Surge Protector
Owner's Instructions:
The Garage Door Opener Surge Protector is designed to protect LiftMaster
®
garage door openers against
damage from lightning and power surges. The Surge Protector will stop radiated surge currents from
coming through wall control and safety sensors, as well as surge currents from coming through AC power
line according to the rating chart shown below.
Plug the Surge Protector into grounded (3-wire) 120V AC outlet within four (4) feet of the garage door
opener. Plugging Surge Protector into a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) is acceptable, but not
recommended as power surges may cause the GFCI to trip and you will need to reset the outlet in order
to operate the garage door opener.
Installing the wall control wires:
At the garage door opener, remove the white-white/red wires (for wall control) from Quick-Connect terminals.
• Using a 5' piece of white-white/red 22 AWG bell wire (not included), strip 7/16" of insulation from both ends.
• With existing wall control wire and new wire, use pliers to twist same colored wires together.
• Referring to wiring diagram, insert wall control wires into red and white connectors on Surge Protector.
• Insert opposite ends of new wire into Quick-Connect terminals located on garage door opener as follows:
white to white and white/red to red.
Installing the safety sensor wires:
At the garage door opener, remove the white-white/black wires (for safety sensors) from Quick-Connect terminals.
• Using a 5' piece of white-white/black 22 AWG bell wire (not included), strip 7/16" of insulation from both ends.
• With existing safety sensor wires and new wire, use pliers to twist same colored wires together.
• Referring to wiring diagram, insert safety sensor wires into white and gray connectors on Surge Protector.
• Insert opposite ends of new wire into Quick-Connect terminals located on garage door opener as follows:
white to white and white/black to gray.
Installing the Surge Protector:
• Plug Surge Protector into AC outlet
• Plug garage door opener into outlet on front of Surge Protector
• Test garage door opener for proper operation. Be sure to test all functions including wall control, keypad, safety
sensors (Door Reversal Test - See garage door opener manual for instructions) and any other accessories.
LED Indicator: The indicator light should be illuminated when the surge protector is plugged into AC power and is
protecting your garage door opener system. If the indicator light goes out, the surge protector has sacrificed
(depleted) itself to protect the garage door opener system and should be replaced immediately.
WARNING
To prevent possible SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH from electrocution:
• Unplug garage door opener from AC outlet and be sure power is disconnected BEFORE
installing the Surge Protector.
• Connect terminals ONLY to 24 VOLT low voltage wires.

Chamberlain Connected Equipment Limited Warranty
Chamberlain warrants to the original purchaser of any Chamberlain Surge Protector that the surge protector shall be free of defects in
material and workmanship for a period of five (5) years from the date of original purchase, and will repair or replace, at its option, any
defective surge protector free of charge. The proper operation of the Chamberlain Surge Protector may destroy the protector itself.
Such an event is not a defect and is not covered by this limited warranty.
For a period of five (5) years from the date of original purchase of any Chamberlain Surge Protector, Chamberlain will repair or
replace, at its option, any LiftMaster garage door opener (“Connected Equipment”) which is damaged by a transient voltage surge (an
“Occurrence”), while properly connected through a Chamberlain Surge Protector to a properly wired AC power line with protective
ground. This limited warranty is null and void unless all wires leading into the equipment pass through an appropriate Chamberlain
Surge Protector as further described herein. Chamberlain reserves the right to review the damaged Chamberlain Surge Protector, the
damaged Connected Equipment and the site where the damaged occurred. All costs of shipping the Chamberlain Surge Protector
and the damaged equipment to Chamberlain for inspection shall be borne solely by the purchaser. Damaged equipment must remain
available for inspection until the claim is finalized.
All above warranties are null and void if the Chamberlain Surge Protector in use during the occurrence is not provided to Chamberlain
for inspection upon Chamberlain's request at the sole expense of the purchaser, Chamberlain determines that the Chamberlain Surge
Protector has been improperly installed, altered in any way or tampered with, Chamberlain determines that the damage did not result
from the occurrence or that no occurrence in fact took place, or Chamberlain determines that the Connected Equipment was not used
under normal operating conditions or in accordance with all labels and instructions. All Chamberlain Surge Protectors must be
plugged directly into the power source and must not be “daisychained” together in serial fashion with other power strips, UPS, other
surge protectors or extension cords. Any such installation voids the limited warranty. This limited warranty only protects against dam-
age to properly connected equipment where Chamberlain has determined, in its sole discretion, that the damage resulted from an
Occurrence, and does not protect against acts of God such as flood, earthquake, direct lightning strike, war, vandalism, theft, normal-
use wear and tear, erosion, depletion, obsolescence, abuse, damage due to low voltage disturbances (i. e. brownouts or sags), non-
authorized program or system equipment modification or alteration. This warranty is secondary to any existing coverage of any
Connected Equipment, including, but not limited to, any manufacturer's warranty, extended warranties or insurance
coverage.
THIS LIMITED WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF ANY OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED
WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR OTHERWISE, AND OF ANY OTHER
OBLIGATIONS OR LIABILITY ON SELLER'S PART. THIS LIMITED WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER NON-DEFECT DAMAGE,
DAMAGE CAUSED BY IMPROPER INSTALLATION, OPERATION OR CARE (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO ABUSE, MIS-
USE, FAILURE TO PROVIDE REASONABLE AND NECESSARY MAINTENANCE, UNAUTHORIZED REPAIRS OR ANY ALTER-
ATIONS TO THIS PRODUCT), REPLACEMENT OF BATTERIES AND LIGHT BULBS OR UNITS INSTALLED FOR NON-RESI-
DENTIAL USE.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL SELLER BE LIABLE FOR CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL OR SPECIAL DAMAGES
ARISING IN CONNECTION WITH USE, OR INABILITY TO USE, THIS PRODUCT. IN NO EVENT SHALL SELLER'S LIABILITY
FOR BREACH OF WARRANTY, BREACH OF CONTRACT, NEGLIGENCE OR STRICT LIABILITY EXCEED THE COST OF THE
PRODUCT COVERED HEREBY. NO PERSON IS AUTHORIZED TO ASSUME FOR US ANY OTHER LIABILITY IN CONNECTION
WITH THE SALE OF THIS PRODUCT.

Overview

The Chamberlain LiftMaster Professional Model 990LM is a garage door opener surge protector designed to safeguard LiftMaster garage door openers from damage caused by lightning and power surges. It specifically protects against radiated surge currents originating from wall controls and safety sensors, as well as surge currents from the AC power line.

Function Description:

The surge protector works by diverting excess voltage from lightning strikes and power surges away from the garage door opener system. It features dedicated connections for the wall control and safety sensors, ensuring comprehensive protection for these critical components. An LED indicator light provides visual confirmation that the surge protector is actively protecting the system. If this light goes out, it signifies that the surge protector has sacrificed itself to protect the opener and needs immediate replacement.

Important Technical Specifications:

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The surge protector must be plugged into a grounded (3-wire) 120V AC outlet within four feet of the garage door opener. While plugging into a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) is acceptable, it is not recommended as power surges may cause the GFCI to trip, requiring a manual reset.
  • Wiring:
    • Wall Control: Existing white-white/red wires from the wall control are removed from the Quick-Connect terminals of the garage door opener. A 5-foot piece of white-white/red 22 AWG bell wire (not included) is used to extend these connections. The existing and new wires are twisted together by color, and then inserted into the red and white connectors on the surge protector. The opposite ends of the new wire are inserted into the Quick-Connect terminals of the garage door opener (white to white, white/red to red).
    • Safety Sensors: Existing white-white/black wires from the safety sensors are removed from the Quick-Connect terminals of the garage door opener. A 5-foot piece of white-white/black 22 AWG bell wire (not included) is used to extend these connections. The existing and new wires are twisted together by color, and then inserted into the white and gray connectors on the surge protector. The opposite ends of the new wire are inserted into the Quick-Connect terminals of the garage door opener (white to white, white/black to gray).
  • Testing: After installation, it is crucial to test the garage door opener for proper operation, including the wall control, keypad, and safety sensors (Door Reversal Test).
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always unplug the garage door opener from the AC outlet and ensure power is disconnected before installing the surge protector.
    • Connect terminals ONLY to 24 VOLT low voltage wires.
    • The surge protector is designed for indoor use ONLY.
    • Do NOT perform installation during a lightning storm (visible lightning).

Maintenance Features:

  • LED Indicator: The illuminated LED indicator light confirms that the surge protector is actively protecting the garage door opener system. If this light goes out, it indicates that the surge protector has absorbed a significant surge and is no longer functional. In this event, the surge protector must be replaced immediately to maintain protection.
  • Warranty: Chamberlain offers a five-year limited warranty to the original purchaser, covering defects in material and workmanship. If the surge protector becomes defective, Chamberlain will repair or replace it at its option. The warranty also covers damage to a LiftMaster garage door opener ("Connected Equipment") caused by a transient voltage surge ("Occurrence") within the five-year period, provided the opener was properly connected through the Chamberlain Surge Protector to a properly wired AC power line with protective ground.
  • Warranty Conditions: The warranty is null and void if the surge protector is not provided for inspection upon request, improperly installed, altered, or tampered with. Damage not resulting from an "Occurrence," or if the Connected Equipment was not used under normal operating conditions, is not covered. Surge protectors must be plugged directly into the power source and not "daisychained" with other power strips, UPS, or extension cords. The warranty is secondary to any existing coverage of the Connected Equipment.
  • Exclusions: The warranty does not cover non-defect damage, damage caused by improper installation, operation or care (including abuse, misuse, failure to provide reasonable maintenance, unauthorized repairs or alterations), replacement of batteries and light bulbs, or units installed for non-residential use. It also excludes acts of God (flood, earthquake, direct lightning strike, war, vandalism, theft, normal wear and tear, erosion, depletion, obsolescence, abuse, damage due to low voltage disturbances like brownouts or sags), or non-authorized program/system equipment modification or alteration.
