The SmartSpark® system is a high-energy ignition system designed for industrial and commercial applications, specifically for use with gas, #2 distillate, and diesel fuels. It provides reliable ignition in harsh environments, including those with high humidity and extreme temperatures. The system is designed to operate safely in Class 1 Zone 2 hazardous areas.
Function Description
The SmartSpark® system generates a high-energy spark to ignite various fuels. It incorporates an LED indicator on the back of the exciter, which illuminates when the igniter is sparking. The LED remains lit when the igniter tip reaches its end of life, and when the igniter tip has reached its end of life, the user is allowed to replace igniter tips before they fail, preventing ignition faults from occurring. This compact, on-the-rod design makes the SmartSpark® convenient to use and maintain, offering a powerful ignition solution.
The system's operation involves applying power to the exciter, which then generates a high-energy spark at the igniter tip. The spark is used to ignite the fuel-air mixture in a burner. The system is designed for continuous operation, with an igniter duty cycle of 15 minutes on and 5 minutes off.

Usage Features
The SmartSpark® system is designed for ease of installation and operation.
- Igniter Installation: The igniter/extension rod male connector threads into the female O2 series connector on the exciter. The two components are tightened together, and the igniter tip is then connected to the igniter.
- Input Power Cable Installation: The SmartSpark® input power connector is compatible with the Chentronics® C07000224 Power Cable. The cable connects to the exciter input connector, with the red dot on the cable lining up with the red dot on the power cable connector.
- Installing the Exciter on a Burner: The igniter rod is installed into the burner's igniter guide tube and secured with a clamp or compression fitting.
- Equipment Earth Bond Location: An earth bond stud is located under the output rod, used to connect a 12 AWG wire with a 1/4in ring terminal to the stud. The ring terminal is then connected between the two nuts on the stud, ensuring proper grounding.
The system includes a blue LED indicator that visually represents the functionality of the exciter circuit.
- Always Off: Device Not Powered.
- Steady Rate: Normal Operation.
- Intermittent: Igniter tip near end of life (replace soon).
- Always On: Igniter tip end of life (replace now).
Maintenance Features
The SmartSpark® system is designed for minimal maintenance, with features that facilitate easy upkeep and troubleshooting.
- Igniter Tip Replacement: The LED indicator provides a visual cue when the igniter tip is nearing its end of life (intermittent flash) or has reached its end of life (always on), allowing for proactive replacement and preventing ignition faults.
- Troubleshooting: The manual provides instructions for troubleshooting common issues. For example, if the power cable is disconnected, the system will not operate. The manual emphasizes the importance of ensuring all connections are secure.
- Safety Precautions: The manual outlines critical safety warnings, including "HAZARDOUS VOLTAGE" and "EXPLOSION HAZARD." Users are instructed to disconnect power before servicing the equipment, ensure proper grounding, and avoid joining or separating any connection to the equipment when energized. The equipment must be installed and serviced by qualified personnel in accordance with local and national codes.
- Repairability: The equipment is field-repairable, and components can be replaced if damaged. However, the equipment is not user/field repairable and must be returned to the manufacturer for evaluation in the event of an equipment malfunction. Substitution of components may impair suitability for ATEX Zone areas.
- Technical Support: Chentronics® provides technical support for installation and operation. Contact information for support is provided in the manual.
The SmartSpark® system is a robust and reliable ignition solution, built to withstand challenging industrial environments while offering user-friendly operation and maintenance features.
