50 Seats, restraints
Using safety belts correctly for
small children
Caution
Babies and children should always
wear child restraint systems. The
pelvic bones of a very young child
are so small that a regular safety
belt will not remain low on the hips
as required. In the event of an
accident, the belt is likely to put
pressure directly on the abdomen
and result in severe injury. So
make sure that all small children
are protected using a child
restraint system.
Caution
Never hold a baby in your arms
while you are riding. A baby does
not weigh much, until there is a
crash. During a crash a baby will
become so heavy that you cannot
hold it. For example, in a crash at
only 40 km/h a 5.5 kg baby may be
released with a force represented
by the weight of a 110 kg person.
The baby would be almost
impossible to hold.
Using safety belts correctly for
older children
Children who have outgrown child
restraints should wear the vehicle’s
safety belts.
Caution
Children who are not buckled up
can be thrown from the vehicle in
a crash.
