Overview

This document outlines the procedure for replacing the DVD player in a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban C1500, specifically for the 2nd-row entertainment system. The DVD player is treated as a single, non-serviceable assembly, meaning individual components within the player cannot be repaired or replaced separately; the entire unit must be exchanged if any part fails.

Function Description:

The device is a DVD player, part of the entertainment system in the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban C1500. Its primary function is to play DVDs, providing entertainment for passengers, likely those in the second row given the context of "2nd Row" in the title and diagrams. The unit features a screen that can be moved to an "open position" for operation or access, and it integrates into the vehicle's headliner.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Vehicle Compatibility: Specifically designed for the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban C1500.
  • Assembly Type: The DVD player is a sealed assembly; components are not individually serviceable.
  • Mounting: It is mounted in the headliner of the vehicle, secured by four retaining bolts and a retainer/hook mechanism.
  • Wiring: Connects via a wire connector (1) and includes a harness that needs proper routing.
  • Fastener Torque: The four retaining bolts (two front, two rear) must be tightened to 9 N.m (80 lb in). This precise torque specification is crucial for secure installation and to prevent damage or loosening over time.
  • Special Tools: Requires a J 38778 Door Trim Pad Clip Remover for removal, indicating the presence of clips that secure the assembly or surrounding trim.

Usage Features:

  • Screen Operation: The screen can be moved to an "open position," suggesting it might fold down or articulate for viewing.
  • Integrated Design: The DVD player is designed to integrate seamlessly into the vehicle's interior, specifically the headliner, for a factory-installed appearance.
  • Ease of Access (for removal/installation): While requiring specific tools and steps, the process is designed to be manageable for a technician. The use of a hook mechanism simplifies the handling of the assembly during installation and removal, allowing it to rest securely while wiring is connected or disconnected.

Maintenance Features:

  • Replacement-Focused Maintenance: The most significant maintenance feature is that the DVD player is replaced as an entire assembly. This simplifies troubleshooting (if the player is faulty, replace the whole unit) but increases the cost of repair compared to replacing individual components.
  • Tooling: The requirement for a specific tool (J 38778) highlights the need for proper equipment to avoid damaging the vehicle's interior or the DVD player during maintenance.
  • Detailed Procedure: The manual provides a step-by-step guide for both removal and installation, including specific instructions for handling the unit, disconnecting/connecting wiring, and tightening fasteners to correct torque specifications. This ensures that maintenance is performed correctly and safely.
  • Wiring Harness Routing: Emphasis is placed on correctly routing the wiring harness (to the right side of a large plastic pin) during installation. This is critical for preventing chafing, interference, or damage to the wiring, which could lead to electrical issues or premature failure.
  • Fastener Notice: The "Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices" implies that there are general guidelines or warnings regarding fasteners that should be observed, reinforcing the importance of proper torque and handling.
  • Screw Cover: The presence of a rear screw cover suggests a design that conceals fasteners for a cleaner aesthetic and potentially protects them from dust or damage. This cover must be removed and reinstalled during maintenance.
