Overview

This document provides a quick reference guide for the CHG Spirit Select™ Hospital Beds, detailing their operation, features, and maintenance.

General Bed Operations

The bed offers various articulation controls. Users can raise or lower the head section (backrest), knee section, or the entire bed using either the footboard or siderail controls. This is achieved by PUSHING and HOLDING the UP/DOWN arrow buttons.

For emergencies, the CPR button can be PUSHED and HELD to quickly flatten the head (backrest) and knee sections of the mattress deck.

The bed also supports Trendelenburg (TREND) and Reverse Trendelenburg (rev.TREND) positions. These functions are activated by PUSHING and HOLDING the respective TREND or rev.TREND buttons. To level the bed from either of these positions, the user should press and hold the opposite TREND function button until the bed automatically stops at a level position.

A CHAIR button allows the bed to be moved into a desired chair position by PUSHING and HOLDING it until the bed stops. To flatten the mattress deck and level the bed from the chair position, the LEVEL ALL button should be PUSHED and HELD.

The Auto Contour function, engaged by pressing the CONTOUR button, automatically raises or lowers the knee section when the head (backrest) section is articulated. An illuminated CONTOUR button indicates that the function is active. This feature is ignored if the knee Lock-Out is activated.

To flatten both the head (backrest) and knee sections of the mattress deck, the LEVEL ALL button should be PUSHED and HELD.

Lock-Out Features

Lock-Outs restrict patient use of specific siderail controls. Pressing the patient LOCK button under each function illuminates it, indicating that patient use of that particular function from any siderail control is restricted. When the LOCK button is not illuminated, patient use is permitted. Note that the footboard staff control remains functional even when patient Lock-Outs are activated.

A Master Lock-Out restricts all siderail and footboard controls. This is activated by pressing all three LOCK buttons simultaneously. When active, all three LOCK buttons will flash sequentially. To deactivate, press all three LOCK buttons simultaneously again. The Emergency CPR function and Nurse Call buttons remain functional even with the Master Lock-Out activated.

Bed Exit Alarm

The Bed Exit Alarm helps prevent falls by alerting staff when a patient exits the bed.

  1. Place the patient in the bed.
  2. Press the SET/RESET button to cycle through three sensitivity levels (zones) and stop at the appropriate level.
  3. An audible "chirp" will sound, indicating the alarm is armed.
  4. Press the CHIME button to cycle through volume and priority call options, stopping at the desired level.

The Bed Exit Alarm can be silenced by:

  • Pressing either the SET/RESET or CHIME button to pause the alarm. To resume, return the patient to the bed and press SET/RESET. If the patient is not returning, press SET/RESET to deactivate the alarm.
  • Returning the patient to their original position in the bed, which will trigger a "chirp" to re-activate the alarm.

To change the Bed Exit Alarm Chime (Song), PUSH and HOLD the CHIME button for 3 seconds to access a menu section for cycling through different chimes. Once the desired chime is heard, press the ON/ENTER button to select it.

Underbed Nightlight

The LIGHT button allows users to scroll through the brightness levels of the underbed nightlight (OFF – LOW – MED – HIGH). The Bed Exit Nightlight automatically illuminates when the patient exits the bed and turns off when the patient re-enters or after 15 minutes.

Power Status Indicator

The bed's power status is indicated by various light combinations:

  • Green AC only: Bed is plugged into the wall, and the battery is fully charged.
  • Green AC and flashing Yellow DC: Bed is plugged into the wall, and the battery is charging.
  • Yellow DC only: Bed is running on battery power.
  • Yellow DC and flashing Red ATTN: Bed is running on battery power but has used up the battery reserve. The bed should be plugged into the wall and allowed to charge for 24 hours.
  • Green AC and flashing Red ATTN: Bed is plugged into the wall, but there is a problem with the battery or another component. The battery connection should be confirmed, and the bed serviced immediately.

Scale / LCD Display

The ON/ENTER button "wakes up" the Home Screen to display Patient Weight. The UP/DOWN buttons cycle through additional Home Screens showing Head & Trend angles and warnings.

Usage Features:

  • Before each new patient: Zero the scale. This automatically resets adjusted patient weight and bed exit alarm history.
  • Before adding equipment: Use the "Change Equipment" feature to prevent new items from impacting displayed patient weight.

Menu Navigation:

  • Use UP/DOWN arrow buttons to scroll through menus.
  • Press the ON/ENTER button to make selections.
  • An audible "chirp" indicates a selection has been made.

The menu structure includes:

  • HOME SCREENS: Patient Weight, Head & Trend Angles, Warnings.
  • SCALE MENU: Select LB/KG, Change Equipment, Adjust Weight, View Weight Change, Weight Change Alarm, Reset All, Exit.
  • BED EXIT MENU: Alarm History, Bed Exit Light, Alarm Auto Reset, Alarm Auto Re-Arm, Alarm Auto Arm, Lock Zone/Chime, Alarm Chime, Autoarm Pause, Exit.
