Function Description
The MS. PAC-MAN/GALAGA Model 9600 is a home arcade game that combines two classic Namco titles: Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga. It is designed to replicate the arcade experience in a home setting.
Ms. Pac-Man Game Play:
The objective of Ms. Pac-Man is to score points by guiding Ms. Pac-Man through a maze, eating dots, fruit, pretzels, energy pills, and ghosts. Players earn a bonus Ms. Pac-Man life for every 10,000 points scored. The game starts with three lives, indicated by symbols at the lower left of the screen. Ms. Pac-Man begins near the center of the maze, below the ghosts' reincarnation chamber. Players use a joystick to navigate Ms. Pac-Man. Eating all dots clears the maze and advances to a new one. Floating fruit and pretzels provide bonus points. Eating an energy pill turns ghosts blue, allowing Ms. Pac-Man to gobble them for points (200 for the first, 400 for the second, 800 for the third, and 1600 for the fourth ghost on the same pill). The effects of energy pills are temporary, and ghosts' eyes return to the chamber for reincarnation after being eaten. Ghosts blink before returning to their original colors if not eaten. The game features four changing mazes with increasing difficulty and varying side exit locations, offering four ways out of each maze. Bonus fruit symbols also float freely with higher point values. The game includes a three-act cartoon series depicting Ms. Pac-Man's love story with Pac-Man, their marriage, and the birth of Pac-Baby.
Hints for Survival in Ms. Pac-Man:
- Practice clearing dots before attempting to eat ghosts.
- Stay near an energy pill, luring ghosts towards you before consuming it to maximize ghost-eating opportunities.
- Utilize maze openings as escape tunnels, noting that different mazes have different tunnel configurations.
Galaga Game Play:
In Galaga, players control a fighter spaceship, moving it left and right to defend against missiles and suicide attacks from Galaga aliens and the Galaga Commander. The game features infinite levels, with every third level being a challenging stage. Players can retrieve captured fighters from the descending Galaga Commander's tractor-beam to gain a "dual fighter" and double their firepower. Points are awarded based on the type of attacks and the enemy's condition (waiting, offensive, or formation). Destroying the boss Galaga requires two hits. A special hidden Galaga can change shape and split into multiple pieces; destroying all transformed Galagas yields 1,000-3,000 bonus points. Challenging stages (every third stage) present nine different Galaga that fly unpredictably; destroying all of them earns a 10,000 perfect score bonus.
Galaga Winning Strategies:
- Tractor-Beam: If the fighter is hit by the boss Galaga's tractor-beam, it is captured. Destroying the attacking boss Galaga releases the captured fighter, turning it into a dual fighter with doubled firepower. If no fighters remain after capture, the game ends.
- Hit Ratio: The scoreboard at the end of the game displays the number of missiles fired, Galaga destroyed, and the percentage of targets hit.
- Stages and Fighters: The current stage number is in the lower right, and remaining fighters are on the right side of the screen.
- Bonus Fighters: Additional fighters are awarded at scores of 30,000, 70,000, and every 70,000 points thereafter.
- Characters: Fighters are player-controlled spaceships that fire missiles. Dual fighters shoot two parallel missiles. Galaga are insect-shaped aliens that fly in formation and attack. The boss Galaga, at the highest position, is the only one with a tractor-beam. Destroying the boss temporarily weakens the remaining Galagas' attack power.
- Fire when Galaga is Weakened: After destroying the boss Galaga, the enemy is temporarily weakened, providing an opportunity to destroy remaining Galaga while avoiding collisions.
- Escape Plans: Attack the right and left sides of the enemy formation early to create escape zones. This prevents being surrounded, though Galaga may still attack in these zones.
- Dual Fighters: Using dual fighters doubles firepower, which is crucial for defending positions and achieving perfect scores, especially during challenging stages.
- Blue Boss: Hitting the boss Galaga and turning it blue makes it easier to destroy, even if it has captured fighters.
