ENGINE NUMBERS: All engine serial numbers can
contain as many as fifteen characters and digits. On
198,
225, 400 and440 cubic inch engines the first letter
will designate series (model year), the next three
numerals will designate cubic inch displacement, the
next one or
two letters (depending on type of engine)
will designate model, the following four numerals
designate build date, the next numeral indicates shift on
which engine was built. On 3 18,340 and 360 cubic inch
engines the first letter will designate series (model
year), the next letter will designate manufacturing plant,
the next three numerals will indicate cubic inch displace-
ment, the next one or two letters (depending on type
of
engine) will designate model, the following four nu-
merals designate build date, and the last four numerals
designate the engine sequence number. All 198 and 225
the joint face at right corner, adjacent to number
1
cylinder bore. All 3 18, 340 and 360 cubic inch engines
block just below the left cylinder head. All 400 cubic
inch engines have the serial numbers stamped on the
cylinder bore. 440 cubic inch engines have the serial
numbers stamped on the left bank, pad adjacent to front
tappet rail.
On all engines, information identifying undersized
crankshaft, oversized tappets, low compression, over-

sized cylinder bores, engine built that day and the shift
is stamped on the cylinder block at various locations
depending on engine. 198 and 225 cubic inch engines
are stamped on the joint face at right corner, adjacent
to number
1 cylinder bore, after serial number. 318,
of the block just below the left cylinder head. 400 cubic
inch engines are stamped on the right bank joint face
just forward of the number 2 cylinder bore. 440 cubic
inch engines are stamped on the left bank, pad adjacent
to front tappet rail. For additional information on

N SM I SSI 0 N NUMBERS : All manual transmission
numbers will be stamped on a pad provided on the right
side of the case. All TorqueFlite transmission numbers
will be stamped
on a pad provided on the left side of
the case oil pan flange.
BODY CODE PLATE: Includes schedule date, body
type, engine code, transmission code, tire code, trim
code and paint codes (Fig. 2).
