Overview

This document describes the Clam C-560 Thermal Hub Shelter, a portable ice fishing shelter designed for outdoor use in cold weather conditions.

Function Description:

The Clam C-560 Thermal Hub Shelter provides a temporary, enclosed space for ice fishing, offering protection from the elements. Its hub-style design allows for relatively quick setup and takedown. The shelter is intended to be anchored to ice surfaces for stability. It features thermal fabric, which likely contributes to better heat retention inside the shelter, making it more comfortable for users in cold environments. The design emphasizes portability and ease of use, making it suitable for anglers who need a reliable and efficient shelter for their ice fishing activities.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model No.: -14477-
  • Part Number (p/n): 11477
  • Instruction No.: 106240
  • Center Height: 80 inches
  • Footprint: 90x90 inches
  • Hub-to-Hub Dimensions: 110x110 inches
  • Weight: 39 lbs.
  • Fabric: Flame-resistant fabric meeting CPAI-84 specifications. The fabric is treated with a fire retardant.
  • Hub Assembly: Includes 5 hub assemblies (Part No. 103507).
  • Ice Anchors: 4 included (Part No. 102457), with an option to order more (PN 108064 for a pack of two).
  • External Anchor Straps: 4 included (Part No. 104042).
  • Hub & Pole Kit: Includes 4 poles and 1 hub (Part No. 109078).
  • Carry Bag: 1 included (Part No. 105036).
  • Buckle Assy with Strap: 4 included (Part No. 103244).
  • Instructions/Owner's Manual: 1 included (Part No. 106240).

Usage Features:

  • Setup: The shelter is a hub-style design, requiring no tools for setup. Users are advised to watch a setup video on www.clamoutdoors.com and practice at home before using it on ice. The setup process involves unfolding the shelter, ensuring the gray top faces upward, and that poles are not twisted. The blue looped hub (roof) is deployed first by pulling it upward until it pops up. Subsequently, the loops on the walls are pulled outward until all sides are popped out.
  • Anchoring: Once standing, the shelter must be anchored to the ice using the provided ice anchors and straps. An Ice Anchor Installation Tool (PN 108348, not included) is recommended for screwing anchors into the ice. Straps are fed onto the ice anchors and cinched tight. In windy conditions, additional anchors may be needed, placed several feet away from the hub on the windward side, with straps connecting the hub eye bolt to the remote anchor.
  • Ventilation: Users are instructed to open all vents for fresh air ventilation, especially when using oxygen-depleting heaters, to prevent asphyxiation.
  • Safety:
    • No Open Flames: Open flame heaters are strictly prohibited inside the shelter due to the risk of fire and the fabric's flammability. The fabric, while treated with fire retardant, is not fireproof and will burn with extended exposure to open flame.
    • Heater Contact: Ice Armor fabric can melt if it comes into contact with hot surfaces, such as heaters.
    • Unattended Use: The shelter should never be left unattended when set up.
    • Night Fishing: Due to increased traffic on lakes (snowmobiles, autos), ice fishing at night or in poor visibility can be hazardous. Users should take precautions with lights or reflectors to ensure visibility to drivers. Exterior reflectors must be visible at night to reduce collision risk.
    • Wind Conditions: External anchors should be used during excessive wind (15+mph).
    • Chemicals: Application of any foreign substance to the tent fabric may render the flame retardant properties ineffective.
  • Takedown: The takedown process involves closing all windows and leaving one or both doors open for air escape. All internal ice anchors and straps are removed and stored. The center hub on any wall is pushed inward until it collapses, followed by pushing in all other walls. Finally, the roof hub (blue loop) is pushed down until it collapses. The shelter is then folded, ensuring poles do not entangle, and placed back into the carrying case with hubs toward the bottom.

Maintenance Features:

  • Drying: It is crucial to completely dry the ice shelter after each use and before storing to prevent moisture-related damage.
  • Storage: Store the shelter in a cool, dry place, away from rodents. Some customers have found success storing it in a sealed plastic tote with dryer sheets or moth balls to deter mice.
  • Cleaning: The shelter tent can be washed using a standard soap or a bleach and water solution (10 parts water to 1 part bleach) to remove mildew smell. It is explicitly stated not to place the shelter tent into a washing machine for cleaning.
  • Zipper Maintenance: If zippers freeze or stick, zipper lubricants (gel-type or silicone spray) can be applied to help.
  • Patching: Patch kits are available for purchase online (www.clamcorp.com under "Parts/Info"). To apply a patch, spray adhesive (3M #77 or #90 recommended) on both the tent surface and the patch, wait until tacky, then press the patch onto the tent.
  • Water Repellency: Customers have used water repellent sprays or applications (like Camp Dry) on the outside of the shelter to prevent water from coming through. These products will not damage the tent.
  • Pin Holes/Cracks in Fabric: The manual addresses common concerns about pin holes and cracks in the fabric. Pin holes are explained as either wear on the color/black-out coating due to elements/friction or parts of the woven material where coating did not attach. These are considered appearance issues and do not affect the fabric's function. Cracks on the inside finish are normal, resulting from folding, and do not affect the overall function of the ice house. The fabric's design allows vapors to escape when heated, preventing leaks when snow/ice melts, as water molecules are larger than vapor molecules.
  • Warranty: The product carries a one (1) year warranty from the date of original purchase against manufacturer's defects. The warranty does not cover cracked windows, tent tears, broken/bent poles due to high wind/weather conditions, or unattended use. It is void if the product has been subject to neglect, misuse, improper installation, misapplication, alteration, or accident, including improper maintenance or use of unauthorized parts/attachments. An original, dated receipt is required for warranty claims. Warranty claims can be submitted via email (preferred method), phone, or mail to Clam Customer Service, providing full name, address, phone number, a copy of the receipt, a brief problem description, and pictures. The company reserves the right to repair or replace defective parts.
  • Limitation of Liability: Clam Corporation's liability is limited to product repair. They are not liable for any injury, loss, damage, or expense (direct or consequential) related to product use or inability to use. Clam reserves the right to make product alterations or modifications to improve performance and efficiency without obligation to modify products already in service.
  • Parts Ordering: Replacement parts and accessories can be ordered online at www.clamoutdoors.com.
