FROST-PROOF YARD HYDRANT
HOW A FROST-PROOF HYDRANT WORKS
CLOSED
The hydrant is closed and no water is in the
riser pipe or head. Water is stopped by the
plunger (valve) below the frost line.
Protected like this, no freezing can occur.
CLOSED - DRAINING
Closing the handle pushes the plunger
down to seal off the water and uncover
the drain hole. This allows the water in
the head and riser pipe to drain back
down into the gravel drain bed. The
hydrant is now empty and cannot freeze.
OPEN - WATER FLOWING
Water is made available by raising the handle.
This will lift the plunger allowing water to flow and
the plunger to seal off the drain hole.
®
LEAVE THIS SHEET WITH END USER.
NOTE: WATER FLOW CANNOT BE THROTTLED.
Hydrant handle must be positioned in the FULL
open position for proper water flow and drainback
seal. This hydrant will not operate properly in a
PARTIALLY open position.

Overview

The Clayton Mark 5451 Series Frost-Proof Yard Hydrant is a heavy-duty, reliable outdoor water dispensing unit designed for long-term use, even in freezing conditions. Its primary function is to provide a convenient water source that automatically drains to prevent freezing, making it suitable for various applications where a year-round water supply is needed.

Function Description:

The hydrant operates on a simple yet effective frost-proof mechanism. When the handle is in the "closed" position, the plunger (valve) is seated below the frost line, preventing water from entering the riser pipe and head. This ensures that no water remains above the frost line to freeze. When the handle is raised to the "open" position, the plunger lifts, allowing water to flow from the supply line up through the pipe and out the hose adapter. Crucially, when the handle is returned to the "closed" position, the plunger not only seals off the water supply but also uncovers a drain hole. This allows any water remaining in the head and riser pipe to drain back down into a gravel drain bed below the frost line, leaving the hydrant empty and protected from freezing.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • No Lead Certification: The hydrant is certified to contain 0.25% Pb (lead) by weighted average, meeting "No Lead" standards.
  • Inlet/Outlet: It features a 3/4" NPT (National Pipe Taper) inlet for connection to the water supply and a 3/4" garden hose thread outlet for easy attachment of hoses.
  • Construction Materials:
    • Head: Cast Iron
    • Handle: Cast Iron
    • Connector: Brass
    • Link, Fulcrum Bolt, Fulcrum Nut, Square Head Set Screw: Steel-Zinc Plated
    • Packing Nut: Brass
    • Packing: Graphite
    • Hose Adapter 3/4": Brass
    • Bottom Valve: Brass
    • Clevis Rod/Rod Assembly: Stainless Steel/Steel-Zinc Plated
    • Pipe: Steel, Galvanized
    • Plunger: BUNA-N/Brass
  • Bury Depth: The installation instructions indicate an approximate bury depth of 24 inches, with the hole dug 1 foot deeper than the bury depth to accommodate the drain field.
  • Operating Pressure: Recommended operating pressure is 20 to 40 psi, with a maximum regulated pressure of 80 psi to prevent accelerated wear and potential leakage.
  • Drainage: Requires a properly constructed gravel drain field for effective frost-proofing.

Usage Features:

  • Easy Operation: A simple handle mechanism controls water flow.
  • Frost-Proof Design: Automatically drains water from the standpipe below the frost line when closed, preventing freezing.
  • Dual Bypass Bottom Valve: Designed for better flow and reduced risk of blockage from debris.
  • Locking Eye Holes: Allows the hydrant to be padlocked for security, preventing unauthorized use.
  • No Throttling: The hydrant must be operated in the FULL open position for proper water flow and a reliable drain-back seal. Operating it in a partially open position will prevent proper drainage and can lead to freezing.
  • Hose Attachment: Users are advised never to leave a hose attached to the hydrant after use, as this can prevent proper drainage and lead to freezing.
  • Indoor/Asphalt/Concrete Installation: If installed in these environments, a 1/8" drain pipe or tube should be connected to the drain port to route drainage to a remote drain field outside the structure, preventing muddy areas or damage to flooring.

Maintenance Features:

  • Above-Ground Repair: All components can be replaced from above ground, eliminating the need for excavation during maintenance or repair. This significantly simplifies servicing.
  • YRK1 Repair Kit: Key internal components (Connector, Link, Fulcrum Bolt, Fulcrum Nut, Square Head Set Screw, Packing Nut, Plunger) are included in the YRK1 Repair Kit, making common repairs straightforward.
  • Adjustability: The hydrant is factory-adjusted for shutoff at 20 to 40 psi. However, an adjustment procedure is provided for instances where the hydrant does not stop water flow or drain properly after installation or prolonged use. This involves loosening a set screw, pushing down the rod, and re-tightening.
  • Drain Hole Blockage Clearing: Instructions are provided to clear drain hole blockages by closing off the spout and cycling the handle to use water pressure to clear debris.
  • Durability: Built with heavy-duty materials like cast iron, galvanized steel, and stainless steel for years of reliable service. The high-strength standpipe provides protection against damage, and its superior corrosion resistance contributes to longevity.
  • Warranty: American Granby Inc. warrants the product to be free from manufacturing defects for a period of one year from the date of shipment to the original purchaser. Note that the inability to shut off water is considered an adjustment issue or a worn part, not a manufacturing defect. Replacement parts are available through AGI distributors.
