Overview

This document provides the installation and user manual for the ECOHEAT EH500, a product manufactured according to European Quality Standards, utilizing prime grade materials, and tested for correct operation before leaving the facility. The manual guides users through the correct and safe installation of the product, emphasizing the importance of careful reading to avoid problems arising from misuse. CLIMER TECHNOLOGY reserves the right to modify the information in this document without prior notice.

Function Description

The ECOHEAT EH500 is a domestic hot water (DHW) system designed for indoor utilization. Its primary function is to heat water using heat pump technology, which extracts energy from the ambient environment. The system operates on an efficient principle where an evaporator extracts ambient energy, a compressor then processes this energy, and a condenser transfers the heat to the water, providing DHW. An expansion valve is also part of this refrigeration circuit. The system is designed to provide hot water efficiently, with various operating modes to optimize energy consumption and performance.

Usage Features

The ECOHEAT EH500 offers several operating modes to suit different user needs and energy preferences:

  • ECO Mode: This is the factory default mode, designed for maximum savings. In this mode, the system heats water exclusively using heat pump technology. Users can adjust the water temperature setpoint (SP1) for this mode.
  • AUTO Mode: This mode maintains a steady water temperature primarily using the heat pump. The electrical heater is activated only if the water temperature falls drastically, ensuring a consistent supply of hot water while still prioritizing energy efficiency. The water temperature setpoint (SP2) for this mode can be adjusted.
  • OverBoost Mode: This mode is selected for rapid heating. It simultaneously utilizes both the heat pump and the electric heater to quickly reach the desired temperature. Once the setpoint temperature is achieved, the system automatically reverts to its initial operating mode (either ECO or AUTO, depending on which mode was active when OverBoost was initiated). The minimum temperature at which OverBoost can be activated (SP3) is configurable.
  • Photovoltaics/Timer Mode: This mode enables automatic operation based on the availability of surplus energy from a photovoltaic (PV) installation or during off-peak electricity rates. When a zero-voltage contact is closed (e.g., by a PV inverter signaling surplus energy or a timer for off-peak hours), the system switches to this mode, and both the heat pump and electric heater work to achieve the programmed temperature, effectively storing excess energy as hot water. When the contact opens, the system returns to its previous mode.
  • Antilegionella Mode: The system includes an automatic thermal shock disinfection feature to reduce the risk of Legionella bacteria development in the tank. This disinfection process occurs automatically once a month, raising the water temperature to 70 °C. This feature can be enabled or disabled via the installer menu.

The user interface features a display and several control buttons: SET/Confirm, ON/Stand-by, Down/Change mode, and Up. The display shows various symbols indicating the system's status, such as compressor switched on, defrost active, fan switched on, alarm active, compressor working hours exceeded, unit in °C or °F, electric heater switched on, and stand-by. The keypad automatically locks after 30 seconds of inactivity, displaying "LOC," and can be unlocked by touching any key until "UnL" appears.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and efficient operation of the ECOHEAT EH500. Key maintenance aspects include:

  • Air Filter: The system incorporates an air intake filter to protect the refrigeration circuit components. This filter should be checked every 6 months for clogging. If clogged, it should be washed with water or replaced. A clogged filter can significantly affect the system's heating performance and lifespan.
  • Condensate Drain: The evaporator produces condensation, which requires proper drainage. The condensate drain should be connected to the wastewater network with a siphon, ensuring free water flow.
  • Accessibility: The design allows for easy removal of the side and front casings, providing convenient access to all parts of the system for maintenance or inspection.
  • Compressor Functioning Hours: The system allows for displaying and deleting compressor functioning hours, which can be useful for tracking operational lifespan and scheduling maintenance.
  • Alarms: The system is equipped with various alarms to indicate potential issues, such as water temperature probe alarms (Pr1, Pr2), evaporator temperature probe alarm (Pr3), low temperature alarm (AL), high temperature alarm (AH), low pressure switch alarm (LHP), high pressure switch alarm (HP), compressor maintenance alarm (FIL), and evaporator failure alarm (UtL). These alarms help in diagnosing problems, and some can be cleared by touching any key or by switching the device off and on.
  • Safety Devices: The installer is responsible for installing minimum safety devices, both hydraulic and electrical, as specified in the manual. These include ball valves, a pressure reducing valve, a non-return valve, a lined filter strainer, a safety valve, and an expansion vessel in the hydraulic circuit. Electrically, the power line must be protected by a 2-pole/16A circuit breaker. The installer must also inform the user about the function and placement of these safety devices.
  • Water Quality: The manual specifies criteria for water quality (e.g., calcium carbonate content, free carbon dioxide, alkalinity, pH, chlorine derivatives) to prevent issues like galvanic corrosion and ensure optimal system performance. Using water outside these criteria can void the warranty.
