The Coleman 5007 Series Portable Propane Coffeemaker is a combustion appliance designed for outdoor use, offering the convenience of brewing coffee in various settings such as camping, picnics, or other outdoor activities. It operates on propane gas and is available in both INSTASTART™ Electronic Ignition and Standard Ignition models.
Function Description:
This coffeemaker is designed to brew coffee using a propane fuel source. It features a water reservoir, a filter basket for coffee grounds, and a carafe to collect the brewed coffee. The appliance heats water, which then passes through the coffee grounds in the filter basket, producing coffee that drips into the carafe. A warming plate keeps the brewed coffee hot. The INSTASTART™ model offers electronic ignition for easy lighting, while the Standard Ignition model requires a lighted match.

Usage Features:
Setting Up:
- Unpacking: Remove components from the carton, including the reservoir & lid, filter holder, carafe, and regulator.
- Cleaning: Clean the exterior with a damp cloth and thoroughly rinse the reservoir, filter holder, and carafe.
- Regulator Connection: Turn off the regulator valve by pressing it down and rotating clockwise. Screw the regulator into the connector at the rear of the coffeemaker hand-tight.
- Propane Cylinder Connection: Remove the plastic cap from the propane bottle and screw the propane bottle into the regulator hand-tight. Ensure the propane cylinder is correctly installed and not in an inverted position.
- Leak Check (Outdoors): Perform a leak test outdoors using soapy water on all connections and fittings. Bubbles indicate a leak. Never use a flame for leak testing. Do not use the appliance until all connections have been leak tested and are leak-free. If a leak persists, remove the cylinder and contact Coleman for service.
Brewing Coffee:
- Initial Run (Water Only): Before making the first pot of coffee, operate the coffeemaker once using only water and a paper filter to remove any manufacturing residues. Use only potable drinking water.
- Filter and Coffee: Pull out the filter holder and insert an 8-12 basket style filter. Add the desired amount of coffee and lightly shake to level it. Align the brim of the filter holder with the slot and slide it in, ensuring the filter is centered.
- Water Reservoir: Fill the carafe with the desired amount of water (up to 10 cups maximum). Open the reservoir lid and pour the water from the carafe into the reservoir. Regularly check the water level; operating without water can cause fire and burn hazards.
- Carafe Placement: Place the empty carafe onto the warming plate, ensuring it is centered and pressed against the Pause 'N Serve lever to allow coffee to flow.
Lighting the Appliance:
- INSTASTART™ Electronic Ignition:
- Set the coffeemaker on a sturdy, flat surface outdoors.
- Turn the regulator valve to "HIGH."
- Press the igniter button repeatedly until the burner lights.
- Visually check that the burner has lit. A good flame should be blue with a minimal yellow tip. If the igniter fails, follow the "Standard Ignition" instructions. If the appliance is wet, the igniter may not spark.
- Standard Ignition:
- Set the coffeemaker on a sturdy, flat surface outdoors.
- Insert a lighted match through the Match Hole and hold it near the burner.
- Open the regulator valve to "HIGH."
- If the appliance is hot, use proper protective equipment.
Turning Off:
- Turn off the regulator valve.
- Disconnect the propane cylinder after brewing is complete.
Safety Precautions:
- Carbon Monoxide Hazard: This appliance produces carbon monoxide (CO), which is odorless and invisible. Never use it indoors, in campers, tents, vehicles, or other unventilated/enclosed areas, as CO poisoning can be fatal. Ensure adequate airflow and do not block air vents.
- Explosion - Fire Hazard: Never store propane near high heat, open flames, pilot lights, direct sunlight, or where temperatures exceed 120 °F (49 °C). Propane is heavier than air and can accumulate in low places; if you smell gas, leave the area immediately. Never install or remove a propane tank while the appliance is lit, near flames, or hot. Do not use in spaces containing volatile or airborne combustibles (e.g., gasoline, solvents, paint thinner).
- Burn Hazard: Never leave the appliance unattended when hot or in use. Keep out of reach of children. Scalding may occur if the carafe lid is removed during brewing. Brewed coffee and grounds are very hot; handle with care. If the filter basket overflows or fails to drain, do not open or handle it; turn off the burner and wait for contents to cool.
- Propane Gas: Propane is invisible, odorless, and flammable. An odorant is added (rotten egg smell), but it can fade. Leaking propane sinks to the lowest level and can ignite from sources many feet away. Use only propane gas set up for vapor withdrawal. Store/use in compliance with local ordinances/codes or ANSI/NFPA 58. Turn off propane when not in use.
- General Safety: Only persons who understand and follow instructions should use or service the appliance. Do not alter the appliance or use parts not approved by Coleman. Use as a cooking appliance only.
Maintenance Features:
Cleaning the Coffeemaker:
Coleman suggests cleaning intervals: 40 brew cycles with hard water, or 80 brew cycles with soft water.
- Place a paper filter in the brew basket and install it.
- Fill the carafe to the 10-cup mark with undiluted white household vinegar and pour it into the water reservoir.
- Place the empty carafe on the warming plate.
- Light the coffeemaker and allow 4-5 cups of vinegar to pass through. Turn off and let stand for 30 minutes.
- After 30 minutes, pour vinegar back into the reservoir and place the empty carafe on the warming plate.
- Light the coffeemaker and let all the vinegar run through.
- Dispose of the vinegar and paper filter.
- To flush all traces of vinegar, fill the reservoir with water and cycle it through the coffeemaker.
- Dispose of the water and repeat steps 8 & 9.
- Note: Do not use solvents, abrasives, metal utensils, or hard brushes to clean the coffeemaker. Use a mild, non-abrasive detergent for the carafe.
Storage:
- Ensure the appliance is cool.
- Move the appliance away from flames and other ignition sources.
- Remove the propane cylinder from the regulator and replace the protective cap on the cylinder.
- Remove the regulator from the appliance. The regulator can be stored by locking its tube into clips on the rear of the coffeemaker.
- Clean the appliance with mild dish detergent after each use and dry all parts thoroughly before storing.
- Place the coffeemaker and regulator in a plastic bag and seal it.
- Store in a cool, dry place, away from pets and children.
Carafe Use & Care:
- Never place the carafe directly on a burner surface, kitchen range, oven, or in a microwave.
- Never set a hot carafe on a wet or cold surface.
- Do not use a cracked carafe or one with a loose/weakened handle.
- Clean with a mild, non-abrasive detergent; avoid cleansers, steel wool pads, or other abrasive materials.
- Avoid sharp blows, scratches, and rough handling.
- Discard the carafe immediately if it is ever boiled dry.
Troubleshooting:
- Coffee Not Brewing: Check if the water reservoir is empty, if the filter basket is properly inserted, or if the carafe is correctly placed on the warming plate. Ensure the burner is on "HIGH."
- Only Brews Water: Check if coffee grounds are in the filter basket and if a filter has been inserted.
- Brewing Slowly: The coffeemaker may need cleaning (follow "To Clean" instructions). If outside conditions are too windy, move the coffeemaker to a less windy area. Ensure the burner is on "HIGH."
- Filter Basket Overflows: Check if the filter basket is properly inserted and if the carafe is correctly placed on the warming plate. If too many coffee grounds were placed in the filter, remove the filter, discard grounds, replace the paper filter, and restart.
- Grounds in Coffee: Check if the filter is properly seated in the basket or if the filter collapsed. If collapsed, remove the filter, discard grounds, replace the paper filter, and restart.
