Coleman Lantern Usage Tips

Overview

The Coleman Pack-Away® 2-in-1 Battery Lantern, Model 5324 Series, is a versatile portable lighting device designed for various outdoor and indoor applications. It offers dual lighting modes, allowing it to function as either a directional floodlight or a 360° area lantern.

Function Description:

The primary function of this device is to provide illumination using an 11-watt fluorescent spiral tube. Its unique "2-in-1" design allows for two distinct methods of light distribution. In its "closed" position, the lantern acts as a floodlight, directing a focused beam of light, similar to holding a flashlight. This mode is activated by pushing inward on both ends of the lantern. When pulled outward on both ends to fully open, the lantern transitions to its "open" position, distributing light 360°, making it suitable for illuminating a larger area like a traditional lantern. The lantern is powered by eight "D" cell batteries, with alkaline batteries recommended for optimal performance.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: 5324 Series
  • Light Source: 11-watt fluorescent spiral tube (Part # 5324-205)
  • Power Source: 8 "D" cell batteries (alkaline batteries recommended)
  • Approximate Operation Time: Up to 19 hours with alkaline batteries
  • Operating Temperature: May not light at temperatures below 20°F (-7°C)
  • Warranty: 5-Year Limited Warranty covering defects in material and workmanship. Batteries and lightbulbs are not covered.

Usage Features:

  • Dual Lighting Modes:
    • Floodlight Mode: Achieved by pushing inward on both ends of the lantern, directing a focused beam.
    • 360° Lantern Mode: Achieved by pulling outward on both ends of the lantern, distributing light in all directions.
  • Battery Installation: Requires 8 "D" cell batteries. The battery cover, which includes a handle (Part # 5324-2001), is unscrewed by turning counterclockwise. Batteries must be installed in the correct orientation as shown on the battery housing. The cover is replaced by aligning it and turning clockwise until securely closed, with on/off symbols aligning with the switch.
  • Portability: The compact design, especially in the closed floodlight position, makes it easy to carry. The battery cover also serves as a handle for convenient transport.
  • Ease of Operation: Simple push/pull mechanism for switching between lighting modes. The on/off switch is integrated for straightforward control.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: The lantern uses 8 "D" cell batteries. To replace, turn the lantern off, unscrew the battery cover counterclockwise, remove old batteries, insert new batteries in the correct orientation, and reattach the cover by turning clockwise until secure. Alkaline batteries are recommended for longest life. It is crucial to replace batteries when the tube is not lit to full brilliance and to remove discharged batteries promptly to prevent permanent damage to the lantern from leakage.
  • Fluorescent Tube Replacement: The lantern utilizes an 11-watt fluorescent spiral tube (Part # 5324-205), which is fragile and should be handled with care.
    1. Ensure the lantern is in the off position.
    2. In an upright position with the tube visible, remove the bezel (Part # 5324-1051) by turning counterclockwise.
    3. Gently press down on the spiral tube and turn counterclockwise until both alignment tabs are visible in the reflector's locating slots. Then, remove the tube.
    4. Install a new spiral tube by aligning its tabs with the locating slots, gently pushing down, and rotating clockwise until secure.
    5. Reattach the bezel to the main body of the lantern by turning clockwise until hand-tight, avoiding overtightening.
  • Cleaning: The exterior of the lantern and the globe can be cleaned using only a damp cloth and mild dishwashing liquid.
  • Warranty Service: For repair service, customers in the U.S. can call 1-800-835-3278 (TDD 316-832-8707), and in Canada, 1-800-387-6161 or 905-501-0090, to locate an authorized service center. If direct return to a service center is necessary, the product should be packaged carefully with shipping and insurance prepaid, including the user's name, address, daytime telephone number, a description of the problem, and a copy of the original sales receipt. Batteries should not be shipped loaded in the product.

Important Considerations:

  • The warranty covers defects in material and workmanship for five years from the purchase date but specifically excludes batteries and lightbulbs, as well as damage from negligent use, misuse, improper voltage, non-Coleman accessories, failure to follow instructions, commercial use, disassembly, or repair by unauthorized personnel, and Acts of God.
  • Coleman is not liable for incidental or consequential damages.
  • Do not return the product to the place of purchase for warranty issues.
  • Always ensure the battery cover is securely tightened before transporting the lantern.
