Overview

The Companion Animal Health CTS-DUO Laser System is a therapeutic laser and optical delivery system designed for veterinary use to treat minor muscle and joint pain, muscle spasm, pain and stiffness associated with arthritis, and to promote relaxation of muscle tissue and temporary increase in local blood circulation. It emits energy in the visible and near-infrared spectrum at 810 nm and/or 980 nm wavelengths.

Function Description:

The system uses a custom software application that allows operators to select from built-in treatment protocols or to adjust optical output power and treatment times. Laser emission is activated by following a sequence of predetermined steps. The optical delivery system consists of a handpiece with interchangeable treatment heads attached to a flexible optical fiber. The laser system is intended for use by licensed veterinarians or other practitioners to provide animal patients with photobiomodulation therapy.

Usage Features:

  • User Interface: The device features a touchscreen display for easy navigation and control. A password entry system ensures secure access.
  • Treatment Protocols: Operators can choose from preset protocols tailored for various species and conditions. The software automatically determines appropriate treatment power, time, and pulse frequency based on patient characteristics (weight, body type, coat length, coat color, skin color) and the selected treatment area/condition.
  • Operation Modes: The system offers a "Standby" mode for initial setup and parameter adjustment, and a "Ready" mode where the laser is prepared for emission. Laser emission is controlled by a finger switch on the handpiece, which can be held down for continuous emission or used in an "Override" setting for on/off toggling by advanced users.
  • Empower IQ™ Delivery System: This system includes a double-sheathed optical fiber and a smart handpiece with interchangeable treatment heads. The handpiece features an LED Emission Indicator Ring that changes color to provide visual feedback on dosing technique (green for ideal, red for too slow/stopped, yellow for too fast). Vibration feedback can also be enabled to alert the operator to suboptimal dosing.
  • Treatment Heads: The system comes with various treatment heads for different applications:
    • Small Non-Contact Treatment Head (Small Cone): For general use where fine control with no contact or soft tissue manipulation is desired, suitable for very small wounds or sensitive areas. Used at lower power settings (3W or below) without direct contact with hair coat or skin.
    • Small Contact Deep Tissue Applicator (Small Ball): For contact applications requiring soft tissue manipulation, suitable for muscular or tissue injuries in tight spaces or sensitive areas. Used at lower power settings (3W or below) with the head held perpendicular to the skin.
    • Large Contact Deep Tissue Applicator (Large Ball): For contact applications requiring soft tissue manipulation, suitable for muscular or deep soft tissue injuries, arthritis, edema/swelling, and other deep tissue conditions. Can be used at higher power settings (up to 18W).
    • Large Non-Contact Treatment Head (Large Cone): For general use where no contact or soft tissue manipulation is desired, suitable for wounds, otitis externa, pyotraumatic dermatitis, postsurgical incisions, and other superficial tissue conditions. Can be used at higher power settings (up to 23.5W) without direct contact with the skin.
    • XL Contact Deep Tissue Applicator (XL Ball): For contact applications requiring soft tissue manipulation and treatment power exceeding 15W, suitable for extra-large deep tissue injuries, edema/swelling, and other deep tissue conditions.
  • Patient Tracker: This feature allows users to add new patients, search existing patient information, edit/print patient characteristics, view/print/repeat treatments, and manage the database.
  • Resources Library: The system includes a library of educational resources, such as the user manual, 3D anatomical diagrams (for canine, equine, or feline species), and user training/patient education videos.
  • Safety Features:
    • Emergency Stop Button: Located on the front of the device to immediately cut electrical power to the microprocessor and laser-emitting components.
    • Laser Emission Indicators: Visual indicators on the touchscreen and front bezel, along with an audible warning, signal when the laser is in "Emission" mode. A red aiming beam from the handpiece provides a visible indication of the treatment location.
    • Remote Interlock Connector: Located on the back of the device, this connector stops laser emission when its terminals are open, allowing for connection to a treatment room door interlock.
    • Unattended Protection: The system automatically returns to "Standby" mode if left in "Ready" mode for 100 seconds without input.
    • Internal Laser Energy Monitor: Continuously monitors output current to ensure it stays within factory calibration settings, stopping emission and displaying an error if power output exceeds a safe limit.
    • Laser Safety Eyewear: Provided eyewear with optical density (OD) rating >5.0 for 808 nm and 980 nm wavelengths must be worn by anyone in the Laser Treatment Controlled Area (LTCA). Animal patients may also wear protective eyewear or have their eyes covered.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Instructions are provided for cleaning the console and treatment heads using a soft, non-fibrous wipe moistened with 70% isopropyl alcohol solution. Specific guidance is given for disassembling and cleaning the Large Deep Tissue Applicator and XL Deep Tissue Applicator.
  • Fiber Management: The laser console has a Fiber Manager and Handpiece Clip for storing the Empower IQ Delivery System, helping to prevent damage to the fiber.
  • Calibration Check Procedure: Instructions are provided for verifying the measurement system's compliance with regulatory requirements using certified, NIST traceable equipment. This procedure is recommended annually but not required unless there is evidence of significant damage or diminished output.
  • Troubleshooting: A section addresses common issues such as the laser system not turning on or scratches on the massage ball, offering solutions before contacting Customer Care.
