This document describes the CONMED ClearView™ Smoke Evacuation System, an electrosurgical device designed to evacuate and filter surgical smoke plume and aerosols generated during surgical procedures. These systems are intended for use with surgical tools such as lasers, electrosurgery systems, and ultrasonic devices.
Function Description:
The ClearView™ Smoke Evacuation System utilizes a high-suction, high-flow rate vacuum motor to draw surgical smoke from the surgical site. The smoke is then processed through a single disposable filter, which contains four stages of filtration to capture the smoke plume. The filter is fully enclosed to protect healthcare personnel from potential contamination during filter changes.
The four stages of filtration are:
- Prefilter: Traps and removes gross particulate matter and casual fluid.
- ULPA Grade Filter (Ultra Low Penetration Air): Captures particulates and micro-organisms from 0.1 to 0.2 microns with an efficiency of 99.999%. This high-tech patented design (U.S. Patent #5874052) ensures effective removal of microscopic airborne contaminants.
- Virgin Activated Carbon Filter: Uses the highest grade activated carbon, specifically designed for CONMED, to remove and adsorb odors and toxic gases produced by burning tissues. This stage preferentially removes toxic organic gases over water vapor, providing optimal odor removal and mitigating potential health hazards for healthcare professionals subjected to prolonged exposure.
- Expanded Foam Filter: Traps activated carbon fines, preventing them from migrating out of the filter.
The system is designed for continuous mode of operation.

Usage Features:
The ClearView™ system features user-friendly electronic controls on its face panel, including a suction on/off switch, suction power adjustment, filter life indicator, and service indicator light.
- Suction ON & Standby: A single ON/OFF button controls the unit. Pressing it illuminates a yellow standby LED, and another press activates suction, indicated by a green "fan running" LED. The unit can be placed back into standby by pressing the ON/OFF button again. Main power is turned off by unplugging the power cord.
- Suction Control: The amount of suction can be adjusted by pressing the suction control button. Each press increases motor speed, cycling through different flow settings: Low/Lap, Medium, High/Turbo. The system automatically adjusts filter life timing based on the selected flow setting.
- Low/Lap Flow Setting = 35 hours of filter life
- Medium Flow Setting = 24 hours of filter life
- High/Turbo Flow Setting = 18 hours of filter life
- Footswitch / Automatic Activation Device: The system comes with a pneumatic footswitch. An Automatic Activation Device or footswitch can be plugged into the front or back of the unit, allowing activation by depressing the pedal.
- Filter Life Indicator: This visual indicator on the control panel shows the remaining filter life. Upon installation of a new filter, the leftmost green LED illuminates (100% life). As the filter is used, the indicator progresses through subsequent green LEDs, then to an amber LED, and finally flashes red when the filter has expended its useful life and requires replacement. The smoke evacuator will not operate if the maximum filter life is consumed and the unit has been off for more than six hours or main power disconnected, requiring a new filter.
- Fluid Collection: This device is not intended for fluid evacuation. If fluid aspiration is expected, fluid collection devices must be installed with the vacuum hose assembly to prevent filter blockage and electrical damage.
- Accessories: CONMED offers replacement filters, tubing accessories, fluid traps, hoses & tubing, reducer fittings, electrosurgical pencil adapters, and electrosurgical smoke plume pencils.
Maintenance Features:
- Cleaning: The unit should be unplugged and wiped with a damp cloth containing a mild disinfectant solution or soapy water, then dried with a clean cloth. Steam sterilization is not recommended.
- Periodic Inspection: Annual visual inspection is recommended, checking for damage to the power cord, power plug, power inlet module, filter inlet (for proper mating, cleanliness, and absence of damage), and any obvious external or internal damage to the system.
- Filter Replacement: The filter should be changed when the Filter Life Indicator shows a red flashing LED. Failure to change the filter can lead to decreased efficiency, contamination of internal components (electric motor, vacuum pump, sound absorbing media), or non-operation of the smoke evacuator.
- Service Light: If the service light illuminates, CONMED Customer Service should be contacted for service instructions.
- User Serviceable Components: There are no user-serviceable components in the ClearView™ Smoke Evacuation System. All servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel.
- Warranty: CONMED warrants the filter system to be free from defects in material and workmanship for one year from the date of delivery, provided routine maintenance with approved replacement parts has been performed. The warranty is void if the product is used improperly or if any warnings are disregarded. Using filters or accessories not supplied by CONMED may void the warranty and cause damage or inoperability.
Cautions and Warnings:
- Read the manual thoroughly before use.
- Test the equipment before surgical procedures.
- Disconnect from the electrical outlet before inspecting components.
- The smoke evacuator produces strong vacuum; adjust airflow and wand/tubing position to prevent patient injury and suction of surgical materials.
- Avoid direct contact of tubing or wand with tissue to prevent patient injury.
- Dispose of CONMED filters and single-use accessories according to local codes and hospital policy.
- Route cords and tubing carefully to avoid tripping hazards or crimping.
- Do not operate in the presence of flammable or explosive gases.
- Connect only to a supply mains with protective earth to avoid electric shock.
- This equipment is for healthcare professionals only and may cause radio interference; mitigation measures may be necessary.
- Use of non-CONMED accessories or replacement parts may increase emissions or decrease immunity.
- Avoid stacking or adjacent use with other equipment unless normal operation is verified in that configuration.
- Do not block tubing or filter, as this can cause motor/blower overheating and unit failure.
- Ensure intake and exhaust vents are not obstructed to prevent reduced performance or damage.
