Overview

The ConnectAmerica "On the Go" device is a personal emergency response system designed for mobile use, offering a range of features to ensure user safety and connectivity. This setup guide details its functions, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The "On the Go" device is an all-in-one personal emergency response system that allows users to call for help in an emergency. It connects to a cellular network and features a prominent HELP button for immediate assistance. The device also includes optional fall detection, which can automatically trigger an emergency call if a fall is detected. A built-in speaker and microphone facilitate two-way communication with emergency operators. The device is designed for portability, allowing users to maintain their independence while having access to help whenever needed.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Connectivity: Cellular network for emergency calls.
  • Charging: Uses a dedicated charging cradle and charging cable.
  • Battery Life: Designed for adequate battery charge for daily use. A complete charge typically takes 2-3 hours.
  • GPS Technology: Utilizes GPS to identify the user's location. Performance can be affected by various factors, including obstructions, metal objects, proximity to structures that block signals from satellites, weather, and other factors. Location accuracy is typically within 30 feet or less in good conditions.
  • Water Resistance: Splash-proof and can be worn in the bath or shower.
  • Magnetic Fields: Contains strong magnetic fields that may cause permanent damage to health devices susceptible to magnetic fields, such as pacemakers or defibrillators. It is recommended to keep the device and its charging cable at least 3 inches from such health devices.
  • Pendant Lanyards: Designed to break away under certain conditions to reduce the risk of strangulation.

Usage Features

  • Setting Up Your System:
    • Charging: Plug the charging cable into an electrical outlet not controlled by a light switch. Place the "On the Go" device in the charging cradle. The LED light will turn solid red, and the device will announce, "Your device is now charging."
    • Initial Test Call: Once the device has adequate battery charge and is connected to the cellular network, it will announce, "Your device is now ready. If you need to place an emergency call, please press and hold the HELP button now." The first time the system announces this, it is important to test the system by making sure it is working properly. Press and hold the HELP button for one second. The device will announce, "Hello, it is time to test your system to make sure it is working properly. Please press and hold the HELP button for one second now." After pressing the HELP button, the device will announce, "Please make this test call when requested." Leave the device on the charging cradle until the LED light is green, indicating that your device has completed charging.
  • Placing an Emergency Call:
    • Firmly press and hold the HELP button. The device will BEEP and announce, "Placing an emergency call now. To cancel the call, please press and hold the HELP button for two seconds now."
    • Allow the call to go through and speak to the emergency operator.
  • Canceling an Emergency Call:
    • During the "Placing an emergency call now..." announcement, press and hold the HELP button for two seconds when prompted.
    • The device will announce, "Your call has been canceled."
    • If the call cannot be placed due to poor cellular connection or other issues, the device will announce, "Call failed." Attempt to place the call again or move to an area with better cellular service.
  • Powering Off Your Device:
    • Press and quickly release the HELP button three times.
    • The device will announce, "Device is powering off. Please confirm by pressing and holding the HELP button now."
    • Confirm by pressing and holding the HELP button. The device will announce, "Powering off now, goodbye."
    • It is important to note that the device is designed to always be ON, except when taking it on an airplane.
  • Turning Your Device ON:
    • Firmly press and hold the HELP button for one second.
  • Optional Fall Detection:
    • The fall detection feature only takes a few seconds to interpret movement and determine if an actual fall has occurred. If a fall is detected, the device will send a signal, which will initiate a call to the emergency response center.
    • Important: Always press your button if able, as some falls may not be detectable. The fall detection pendant does not detect 100% of falls.
    • To cancel a call made due to a Fall Detect event, after you hear the announcement, press the HELP button on your main device for two seconds when prompted. The device will announce, "Your call has been canceled."
    • Wearing Instructions: Wear your device around your neck so that it rests at chest level to avoid unnecessary swinging. Make sure the emergency button is facing forward, making it easier to press in an event of an emergency. Wearing clothing outside your clothing can reduce the percentage of falls being detected.
    • Correct Wearing: High on the chest, on top of the sternum.
    • Incorrect Wearing: Below the mid-sternum or over the stomach.
