Overview

This document is an installation and operation manual for the Continental Gas Stove Series, specifically models CDVS280-1NEA, CS280-1NEA (Natural Gas), CDVS280-1PEA, and CS280-1PEA (Propane Gas). The manual provides comprehensive information for safe installation, operation, and maintenance of these vented decorative gas appliances.

Function Description:

The Continental Gas Stove Series appliances are vented decorative gas stoves designed for indoor use. They are not intended as primary heating appliances and are not for use with solid fuel. These stoves provide a realistic flame appearance and glowing ember effects, enhancing the ambiance of a room. They are certified to Canadian and American National Standards (CSA 2.22 and ANSI Z21.50) for vented decorative gas appliances. The appliances are suitable for mobile home installations if installed according to current standards (CAN/CSA Z240MH Series or ANSI Z223.1 and NFPA 54 in the United States). They are also approved for bedroom and bed-sitting room installations.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Gas Type: Natural Gas (NG) or Propane (P), as indicated on the rating plate. The appliance is field convertible between NG and P using a certified kit.
  • Altitude: Certified for elevations 0-4,500 ft. For installations above 4,500 ft, the certified high altitude input rating must be reduced by 4% for each additional 1,000 ft (305m).
  • Max. Input (BTU/HR): 30,000 for NG models, 26,000 for P models.
  • Max. Output (BTU/HR): 25,500 for NG models, 22,360 for P models (CDVS280-1); 24,600 for NG models, 21,600 for P models (CS280-1).
  • Min. Inlet Gas Supply Pressure: 4.5" (11mb) Water Column for NG, 11" (27mb) Water Column for P.
  • Max. Inlet Gas Supply Pressure: 7" (17mb) Water Column for NG, 13" (32mb) Water Column for P (maximum inlet pressure not to exceed 13" for all).
  • Manifold Pressure (Under Flow Conditions): 3.5" (9mb) Water Column for NG, 10" (25mb) Water Column for P.
  • Electrical Rating: 115V, 60HZ, Less than 12 amperes.
  • Vent Pipe System: Uses a 4" (102mm) exhaust / 7" (178mm) air intake direct vent pipe system. CS280-1 models can also use a 1" (25mm) B vent pipe.
  • Vent Lengths: Maximum allowable horizontal vent run is 20 feet (6.1m). Maximum total vertical vent length is 40 feet (12.2m). Maximum number of vent connections is two horizontally or three vertically (excluding appliance and air terminal connections) when using flexible venting.
  • Clearances to Combustibles:
    • Back Wall: 7" (178mm) for A, 2" (51mm) for B, 1" (25mm) for C (CS280-1 only).
    • Alcove: 14 3/4" (375mm) for D, 4" (102mm) for E, 9 1/2" (241mm) for F.
    • A minimum 20" (508mm) from appliance top to ceiling.
    • A minimum 1" (25mm) clearance to combustibles from bottom and sides of vent pipe.
    • For CDVS280-1, horizontal vent sections require a minimum 2" (51mm) at the top and 1" (25mm) at the bottom and sides. Vertical vent sections require a minimum 1" (25mm) all around.
    • For CS280-1, a minimum 1" (25mm) all around the B vent pipe on both horizontal and vertical runs.
  • Glass: Factory equipped with 5mm ceramic glass.

Usage Features:

  • Safety Barrier: A barrier is provided and must be installed to reduce the risk of burns from hot viewing glass, especially for children and at-risk individuals.
  • Gas Detection: In case of gas smell, users are instructed not to light any appliance, touch electrical switches, or use phones in the building. Instead, they should leave the building immediately and call the gas supplier or fire department.
  • Pilot Lighting: Always light the pilot with the glass door opened or removed, especially for the first time or if the gas supply has run out.
  • Remote Control (Optional): The appliance can be operated with an optional remote control. The receiver switch must be in the "REMOTE" position. The remote displays room temperature, set temperature, signal indicator, flame indicator, child-proof function indicator, and low battery indicator.
  • Battery Backup: The appliance is equipped with a battery backup system (using 2 "D" alkaline batteries, not supplied) that allows operation during a power failure. This system is controlled by a relay that automatically switches to battery power.
  • Venturi Adjustment: The air shutter is factory set. Closing the air shutter results in a more yellow flame, while opening it creates a bluer flame. Adjustment should only be done by a qualified installer.
  • Log Placement: PHAZER™ logs, glowing embers, and charcoal embers are provided to create a realistic glowing effect. Specific instructions are given for their placement to ensure proper flame appearance and prevent carbonization.
  • Spill Switch (CS280-1 only): A thermally activated spill switch on the chimney adaptor shuts down the gas valve if the vent is blocked or disconnected, preventing carbon monoxide buildup. A venting action check procedure is provided to ensure proper operation.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Maintenance: Recommended annually by a qualified service technician. This includes cleaning the burner, pilot assembly, control compartment, media (logs, rocks, glass), air shutter opening, and inspecting the venting system.
  • Cleaning: Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove dirt, debris, or carbon buildup. Flame sensors should be cleaned with fine emery cloth or a synthetic scrub pad.
  • Glass Care: Do not clean glass when hot or use abrasive cleaners. Buff lightly with a clean, dry soft cloth. Ammonia-free glass cleaner is recommended after the first 10 hours of operation and as needed thereafter. Razor blades, steel wool, or other metallic objects should not be used on glass surfaces.
  • Gasket Inspection: Inspect all accessible gaskets and replace as required.
  • Blower Maintenance: If equipped, the blower should be cleaned using a soft brush and vacuum. Blower replacement instructions are provided, which can be done through the firebox or from the rear panel.
  • Gas Leak Check: Periodically check for gas leaks on all gas connections using a soap and water solution. Do not use an open flame.
  • Log/Media Replacement: Only use certified PHAZER™ logs, glowing embers, and charcoal embers from an authorized dealer. Failure to properly position media can cause carbonization.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A detailed table is provided to diagnose and resolve common issues such as pilot not lighting, abnormal flame characteristics, and appliance malfunction.

The manual emphasizes that installation and service must be performed by a qualified installer or service agency to ensure safety and compliance with local and national codes. It also highlights the importance of adhering to specified clearances to combustibles and using only approved components to maintain warranty and certification.
