Power from Mains (13)
When connected to the Mains, the indicator (14) will glow red. Press
POWER button (13) IN to power equipment - the indicator (14) will
glow yellow. The LCD display will also be backlit.
EXT D.C. Input Socket (12)
A standard Roka connector allows the 2017 to operate from an
external 12V DC supply. Please observe the correct polarity - shown
below the D.C. Input Socket (12).
Disconnect the DC supply when not in use.
Suitable batteries include 12V car batteries (directly connected or via
an auxiliary socket such as the cigar lighter) or a Coomber 1959
rechargeable battery (which must be recharged using our 1958
charger).
Volume control (9)
To protect listeners, always adjust the volume control (9) to minimum
before playing a CD - particularly if headphones are being used. Turn
the volume level up once the CD is playing.
If necessary restart the CD once the volume level is set.
Balance Control (10)
The balance control (10) allows fading between the speakers.

are not disconnected and sound will be reproduced through the
internal loudspeakers and any headphones connected.

Prior to using headphones, always turn the volume down,
fit the headphones and then adjust the sound to a

Overview

The Coomber 2017 Stereo CD/Cassette Recorder is a versatile audio device designed for both playback and recording, suitable for educational and general use. It integrates a CD player, a cassette recorder, and various input/output options for enhanced functionality.

Function Description:

The device primarily functions as a stereo CD player and a cassette recorder. It allows users to play audio CDs and pre-recorded cassette tapes, as well as record audio from various sources onto cassette tapes.

CD Player Features:

  • Playback: Plays standard audio CDs.
  • Track Navigation: Features CUE/FORWARD SKIP and REVIEW/BACK SKIP buttons for moving between tracks or fast-cueing/reviewing within a track.
  • Play/Pause: A single button controls both play and pause functions.
  • Stop: Stops CD playback and resets the player, clearing any random, program, or repeat settings.
  • Open/Close: Opens and closes the CD tray, overriding all other functions.
  • Repeat Function: Allows repeating the current track (press once) or the complete CD (press twice).
  • Random Play: Enables the CD player to randomly select and play tracks from the current CD.
  • Program Mode (PROG): Users can program a custom playback order for tracks on a CD. Up to 99 tracks can be selected. The programmed playlist remains active until STOP is pressed or the CD is ejected. The PROG mode will shut down after 10 seconds of inactivity but can be reactivated by pressing PROG again, retaining previous input.
  • Intro Scan (INTRO): Plays the first ten seconds of each track.
  • Mute: Temporarily mutes the sound while the CD continues to play.
  • Time Clock: Displays total CD length, elapsed track time, or remaining total CD playing time.
  • Remote Control: Compatible with the RM05 CD remote unit, which emulates the device's CD player controls.
  • Safety Warning: The device is fitted with a LASER diode. Users are warned not to disassemble the casing or use its contents for purposes other than intended. Always close the CD tray with the unit switched on to prevent damage during transportation.

Cassette Recorder Features:

  • Playback: Plays pre-recorded cassette tapes.
  • Recording: Records from microphones, CD, or other external sources onto cassette tapes.
  • Automatic Level Control: The record level is automatically set for simple, good quality recordings from external microphones, auxiliary input, or CD.
  • Fast Forward/Cue (FF/CUE): Fast-winds the cassette forwards from the STOP position or allows fast-forwarding during playback without stopping.
  • Rewind/Review (REW/REV): Rewinds the cassette backwards from the STOP position or allows reviewing during playback without stopping.
  • Pause: Stops tape recording and playback without disengaging the tape heads and capstan wheel.
  • Stop/Eject: Opens the cassette door for tape insertion/removal and stops play, fast forward, and rewind functions.
  • Recording from Microphone: Recordings are in MONO only. Requires suitable external microphones (e.g., Coomber 1918 or 1808 models) plugged into MIC 1 or MIC 2 sockets.
  • Recording from External Source: Allows recording from a guitar, keyboard, or other external music source connected to the AUX socket. Recordings can be in STEREO or MONO depending on the source and connecting leads.
  • Recording from CD: Records the currently playing CD onto cassette.
  • Recording Difficulties: If recordings are blank, users should check the TAPE/CD selector switch position. If the RECORD key cannot be depressed, check if the left-hand safety tab on the cassette has been removed; a piece of adhesive tape can be used to cover the hole for reuse.
  • Recording Tips: To overcome initial distortion with strong signals, allow the automatic level control to settle before recording by pressing PAUSE, then RECORD, waiting a few seconds, and then releasing PAUSE. The turns counter can be reset to zero for easy navigation.

General Usage Features:

  • TAPE/CD Selector (6): A push-in/pull-out button to switch between CD and cassette modes.
  • Power (13): Powers the equipment on/off. The indicator (14) glows red when connected to mains and yellow when powered on.
  • Volume Control (9): Adjusts the overall sound level. Users are advised to set it to minimum before playing a CD, especially with headphones.
  • Balance Control (10): Fades sound between speakers. Maximum output is achieved when centered.
  • Headphone Sockets (8 & 11): A MASTER headphone socket (8) automatically disconnects internal loudspeakers. Up to five additional pairs of headphones can be connected to sockets (11). If the MASTER socket is not used, internal loudspeakers remain active. For safety, only 600 ohm headphones (e.g., Coomber 1929) are recommended.
