Overview

The Maxi-Lift is a manually propelled, winch-operated elevating aerial platform designed to provide a safe and stable work platform at height. It is intended for use by only one person at a time and is crucial for tasks requiring elevation.

Function Description:

The Maxi-Lift functions as a portable, single-person aerial work platform. Its core mechanism involves a winch system that elevates a work platform to a maximum height of 15 feet. The platform is manually propelled, meaning it must be pushed into position by the operator. Once in place, outriggers are extended and screw jacks are lowered to contact the floor, removing weight from the casters and ensuring stability. A level indicator, located below the winch on the frame, guides the operator in positioning the unit on a firm, level base. The platform is then raised to the desired height using a hand-crank, and a safety cage is locked into position around the operator. To lower the platform, the safety dog is disengaged, and the hand-crank is turned in the opposite direction. The safety dog must always be engaged when elevating and when the platform is occupied. For movement, the platform and cage are lowered, jacks are cranked up, and outriggers are slid in.

Usage Features:

The Maxi-Lift emphasizes safety and proper operation through several key features and requirements:

  • Operator Training: Only properly trained and authorized personnel are permitted to operate the aerial platform. This includes reading and understanding the Instruction Manual and the Manual of Responsibilities, viewing the supplied training video, and completing a proficiency examination.
  • Pre-Operation Checklist: Before each use, operators must remove all packing materials, inspect for damage, and clear any foreign materials that might block moving parts. The safety cage must be raised and locked in position, and the platform checked for proper operation. Any problems encountered require immediate cessation of use.
  • Stability and Leveling: The unit must be situated on a firm, level surface. Outriggers must be fully extended, and jacks placed in contact with the surface to remove weight from the casters. The level indicator must show the unit is level; operation on an incline is strictly prohibited.
  • Safety Cage: The safety cage must be raised and locked before raising the platform, providing a secure enclosure for the operator.
  • Winch Operation: The hand-crank and safety dog mechanism are central to elevation and lowering. The safety dog must be engaged during elevation and at all times when the platform is occupied to prevent accidental lowering.
  • Movement Restrictions: The unit must never be moved with a person on the platform. It should also not be used near moving vehicles or in areas where collisions are possible.
  • Electrical Hazard Awareness: The machine is not insulated. Operators must assume all electrical parts and wires are energized unless known otherwise and maintain a minimum safe approach distance (MSAD) from electrical power lines and apparatus as per OSHA 1910.333. The work platform does not provide protection from contact with or proximity to electrically charged conductors, and operators must account for platform sway, rock, or sag.
  • Manual Accessibility: The instruction manual must be kept inside the equipment door and should not be removed from the unit.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is critical for the safe and continued operation of the Maxi-Lift:

  • Lubrication:
    • Light Oil: Apply light oil as necessary to screw jacks, cable pulleys, cage pivots and lock bolts, gate hinge and latch, and winch bearings. Care must be taken to prevent oil from contacting the brake pad.
    • Light Grease: Apply light grease as necessary to contact points in the column assembly, winch gears (avoiding contact with the brake pad), and caster axles (using a grease gun).
  • Inspections and Adjustments: Operators and maintenance personnel are required to frequently inspect and adjust or replace the following components as necessary:
    • Worn lift cables.
    • Cable pulley bearings.
    • Winch brake disc.
  • Replacement Parts: For continued safe operation, replacement parts must be purchased from the manufacturer only. No part should be substituted without written permission from the manufacturer. When ordering parts or seeking technical support, the Maxi-Lift model number, serial number, part description, and part number should be provided.
  • Cleanliness: The platform must be kept clean to ensure proper function and safety.
  • Maintenance Training: Personnel responsible for maintenance must also undergo proper training, including viewing the training video and understanding the maintenance instructions and safety rules outlined in the manual.

The Maxi-Lift is designed to meet or exceed all applicable OSHA standards, and each unit is inspected by the manufacturer for safety and proper operation before shipment. Adherence to all warnings, instructions, and maintenance schedules is paramount for preventing serious injury or death.
