Overview

The SoClean 2 CPAP Cleaner and Sanitizer is a device designed to disinfect CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) equipment using activated oxygen (ozone). It is compatible with most CPAP machines and masks, though some full-size masks may not fit in its chamber.

Function Description:

The primary function of the SoClean 2 is to sanitize CPAP masks, hoses, and reservoirs. It utilizes activated oxygen (O3), which is produced from regular oxygen (O2) in the air, to kill germs, bacteria, and other pathogens. The device is designed to keep the activated oxygen enclosed within the CPAP equipment and its secure chamber during the sanitizing process. After cleaning, the ozone converts back into regular oxygen. The SoClean 2 can be used with or without a heated humidifier. If a humidifier is not used, it will sanitize the CPAP hose, mask, and headgear. The device is intended for daily use to maintain the cleanliness of CPAP equipment.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Cleaning Agent: Activated oxygen (ozone, O3).
  • Mask Chamber Dimensions: 5" x 5" opening and 7" deep. This accommodates most CPAP masks.
  • Ozone Concentration (inside chamber): Up to 25 PPM (parts per million).
  • Compatibility: Works with most CPAP machines and masks. Some brands/models may require an adapter, especially for heated hoses, to ensure proper setup and maintain heated hose functionality.
  • Warranty: One year. The manufacturer states that testing simulated over 5 years of use without issues.

Usage Features:

  • Permanent Attachment: The SoClean can generally remain permanently attached to the CPAP machine, eliminating the need to disconnect components nightly. However, with a heated hose adapter, the water chamber might need to be disconnected for refilling.
  • Placement: Preferably, the SoClean should be level with the CPAP machine for easier flow. It can be placed on a shelf below the CPAP unit, but users should periodically check the clear tube of the check valve assembly for water, as this can harm the SoClean unit. If water is present, the check valve assembly should be replaced.
  • Humidifier Use: The small tube from the SoClean needs to be submerged in water if the reservoir contains water, to allow activated oxygen to clean the water. The SoClean can also run without water in the reservoir. The small hose has a minimal effect on CPAP air pressure and does not act like a leak. In rare cases with BiPAP or APAP machines, a heated hose adapter might be needed for proper pressure.
  • Pre-wash: A neutralizing pre-wash is recommended before the first use of the SoClean or when introducing new equipment. This fragrance-free, hypoallergenic cleaning solution neutralizes pre-existing odors and removes manufacturing residues. It is used like regular dish soap to wash the CPAP reservoir, hose, and mask.
  • Cleaning Time: The recommended daily run time is 5-10 minutes, preset to 7 minutes. If running the CPAP machine dry (no water in humidifier), the time can be reduced to 3-5 minutes. If an oxidation smell is experienced, the cleaning time can be increased to 12 minutes for a few weeks.
  • Reservoir Refill: Refilling the CPAP reservoir before or after the SoClean runs does not make a difference.
  • Mask Dryness: It is better to run the SoClean when the CPAP mask is completely dry.
  • Odor Management: If a strong odor is experienced, especially after initial use or with new equipment, it is a byproduct of oxidation of old materials. Increasing cleaning time to 11 minutes for a few weeks, then reducing to 7 minutes, and running the CPAP for 10 minutes before use can help reduce the odor. Using the neutralizing pre-wash and avoiding fragrance wipes can also help.
  • Heated Hose: Compatible with heated hoses, but requires a heated hose adapter.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter and Check Valve Replacement: The filter and check valve need to be replaced every six months of normal use. These components are sold together in a kit, and the machine is programmed to alert the user when replacement is due.
  • Manual Cleaning: While the SoClean sanitizes equipment, it does not remove facial oils, dust, or other foreign materials. Users should hand wash their CPAP equipment with the pre-wash solution every 5-6 weeks. The SoClean inhibits facial oil build-up but does not remove existing oils, so wiping the mask periodically or using the pre-wash is still necessary.
  • CPAP Equipment Replacement Schedule: The SoClean is designed to keep equipment free from contaminants but not to extend its life. Users should adhere to the recommended replacement schedule for CPAP equipment as advised by their doctor, insurance company, and DME.
  • Troubleshooting "Hose Not Present": This notification can be caused by the side slot plug falling out or the CPAP hose diameter not being thick enough to engage the switch when the lid is closed. An acrylic sleeve may be needed to thicken the hose diameter.
  • Troubleshooting "Flashing Lights / Time to Order": This indicates it's time to change the filter and check valve. After replacement, hold down the hourglass and manual buttons simultaneously until a smiley face icon appears to reset the message.
