Do you have a question about the CREVIS NA-9189 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The FnIO MODBUS Adapter NA-9189 is a MODBUS TCP/IP slave node designed for industrial control systems, serving as a starter module on the left side of an FnIO system. This adapter facilitates communication between a MODBUS TCP/IP master and various expansion modules within the FnIO system, enabling the exchange of process data.

Function Description:

The NA-9189 acts as a MODBUS TCP/IP server, allowing a master device (e.g., a PLC or configuration tool) to read input data from and write output data to connected FnIO expansion modules. It supports up to 32 expansion slots, managing a total of 126 words (252 bytes) for both input and output data. The adapter uses an internal FnBus system for communication with the expansion modules, which is a proprietary bus for power and data exchange.

The device supports various MODBUS function codes for reading and writing coils and registers, including:

  • 0x01 Read Coils: Reads the status of discrete outputs (coils).
  • 0x02 Read Discrete Inputs: Reads the status of discrete inputs.
  • 0x03 Read Holding Registers: Reads the contents of holding registers.
  • 0x04 Read Input Registers: Reads the contents of input registers.
  • 0x05 Write Single Coil: Writes a single discrete output.
  • 0x06 Write Single Register: Writes a single holding register.
  • 0x08 Diagnostics: Provides diagnostic information about the device and communication.
  • 0x0F Write Multiple Coils: Writes multiple discrete outputs.
  • 0x10 Write Multiple Registers: Writes multiple holding registers.
  • 0x17 Read/Write Multiple Registers: Performs a combination of read and write operations on registers.

The adapter also includes special registers for identification, watchdog timer configuration, TCP/IP settings, and expansion slot information, allowing for detailed monitoring and configuration.

Usage Features:

The NA-9189 is designed for ease of integration into industrial automation systems.

  • IP Address Configuration: The IP address can be set using ARP commands (e.g., arp -s <IP address> <MAC address>) or BOOTP. The default IP address is 192.168.123.1.
  • Web Interface: The adapter features a simple web page accessible via its IP address (e.g., http://192.168.123.1/) for monitoring network adapter status, firmware revision, input/output image mode, expansion module count, and register ranges.
  • Modular Expansion: It supports up to 32 expansion modules, allowing for flexible system design. The total length of the module assembly is limited to 426mm, with ST-2748 modules counting as double width.
  • Plugging and Removal: Modules can be easily locked and unlocked on the DIN rail using a lever mechanism.
  • FnBus System: Communication with expansion modules occurs via the internal FnBus, which provides 6 data pins and 2 field power pins. Users are cautioned not to touch data and field power pins to avoid soiling and damage by ESD noise.
  • Process Image Mapping: The adapter manages input and output process images, which can be configured in different modes (uncompressed or compressed) to optimize data exchange.
  • Watchdog Timer: A configurable watchdog timer (0x1020, 4128) ensures system reliability by monitoring MODBUS operation and triggering user-configured fault actions if communication is lost.

Maintenance Features:

The NA-9189 includes several diagnostic and troubleshooting features:

  • LED Indicators: Five LEDs provide visual status feedback:
    • MOD (Module Status): Green/Red, indicates device operational status, errors (MODBUS error, unrecoverable fault), or standby.
    • LINK (Physical Connection): Green, indicates physical Ethernet connection.
    • ACTIVE (Exchange Data/Traffic Present): Green, indicates active data exchange.
    • I/O (Expansion Module Status): Green/Red, indicates expansion module status, configuration errors, or communication faults.
    • Field Power Status: Green, indicates supplied 24Vdc field power.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting section based on LED status, covering issues like no power, initialization failures, incorrect I/O size, communication errors, and configuration problems.
  • Network Diagnostics: Recommendations for diagnosing network issues include checking cable connections, terminator resistor installation, node address duplication, and master configuration (baud rate, I/O size).
  • Error Response: The MODBUS interface provides error codes (e.g., Illegal Function, Illegal Data Address, Slave Device Failure) to help diagnose communication problems.
  • Special Registers: Various special registers (e.g., Adapter Identification, Adapter Watchdog Time, Adapter TCP/IP, Adapter Information, Adapter User SRAM, Expansion Slot Information) allow for advanced diagnostics and configuration, providing insights into the adapter's state and connected modules.

Safety Instructions:

The manual emphasizes several safety precautions:

  • ESD Protection: Modules contain electronic components sensitive to electrostatic discharge. Proper grounding of personnel, workplace, and packing is crucial during handling. Avoid touching conductive components like FnBUS pins.
  • Explosion Hazard: The device is not suitable for use in hazardous environments where an explosion might occur.
  • Power Supply: Ensure correct voltage and frequency for the power supply to prevent damage.
  • Environmental Conditions: Maintain operating temperature within -20 to 50 °C, relative humidity between 5% and 90% (non-condensing), and avoid direct sunlight or placing modules near flammable material.
  • Wiring: Use standard cables and ensure proper wiring according to specifications.
  • Product Use: Use the product only under pollution degree 2 environment.
