Overview

The d&b audiotechnik Q-SUB is a high-performance subwoofer designed to complement the Q-Series loudspeaker systems, specifically the Q1 and Q7 cabinets. It serves to extend the low-frequency response of these systems, making it suitable for a wide range of sound reinforcement applications, whether flown or ground-stacked.

Function Description

The Q-SUB operates as an actively driven bass-reflex subwoofer. Its primary function is to reproduce low-frequency audio content, enhancing the overall impact and depth of sound systems. The cabinet houses a single long-excursion 18-inch driver, engineered to deliver powerful and articulate bass. The frequency response of the Q-SUB typically extends from 40 Hz up to 130 Hz in its standard configuration. For applications requiring a more focused low-end, a 100 Hz circuit setting is available, which reduces the upper operating frequency to 100 Hz.

The Q-SUB is designed for seamless integration with d&b amplifiers, such as the D12 and E-PAC. When used with a D12 amplifier, the Q-SUB can be driven in a dedicated Q-SUB mode, allowing up to two subwoofers per channel. In scenarios with low continuous levels or cooler ambient temperatures, it's possible to connect up to three subwoofers per channel. The D12 amplifier also supports the SenseDrive function, which is available when using 5-wire cabling and provides enhanced control over the driver's performance. For E-PAC users, the Q-SUB mode (firmware V4.00 or later) enables the E-PAC to drive a single Q-SUB cabinet. However, driving two Q-SUB cabinets in LO IMP mode with an E-PAC is not recommended due to a significant reduction in acoustical output.

A notable feature of the Q-SUB system is its compatibility with the Cardioid Subwoofer Array (CSA) method. CSA allows for the combination of three or multiples of three subwoofer cabinets to create an array with exceptional directivity at low frequencies. This configuration helps to reduce unwanted rearward radiation, improving sound control and clarity in the listening area. When operating in CSA mode, it's crucial that all amplifier settings (input signal, level, 100 Hz, EQ, delay) for the subwoofers in the array are identical.

Usage Features

The Q-SUB cabinet is constructed from marine plywood, ensuring durability and resistance to impact, further protected by a robust paint finish. The front of the loudspeaker is safeguarded by a rigid metal grill, covered with acoustically transparent foam that is replaceable. For ease of handling and transport, the cabinet incorporates a pair of integrated handles and four heavy-duty wheels on the rear panel.

Connectivity is provided via two EP5 or optional NL4 connectors, wired in parallel. The Q-SUB utilizes pins 3/4 and 5 for audio signal, with pin 5 specifically designated for SenseDrive when using EP5 connectors with a D12 amplifier. Pins 1/2 are reserved for Q-Series full-range systems, allowing for a streamlined cabling solution where the female connector can be used to daisy-chain additional loudspeakers.

For stacking, the Q-SUB features two runners extending from the rear to the front panel, which protect the bottom panel from scratching. Correspondingly shaped recesses in the top panel of each cabinet accommodate these runners, preventing movement when stacking multiple Q-SUBs. The cabinet also includes a total of 10 sockets in the front grill and side panels, designed to accept Z5153 Locking pins (8 mm) for secure connection to the array links of the Q1 system.

When deploying Q-SUBs with Q1 cabinets in a flown array, it is imperative that the Q-SUB cabinets are positioned at the top of the column for stability and safety. For ground-stacked applications with Q1 cabinets, an additional socket on the top of the side panels of the Q-SUB allows the Q1 cabinet to be tilted downwards by up to 6 degrees. This requires rotating the Z5152 Q Front links by 180 degrees before attachment to enable the Q1 cabinet to tilt forward.

For use with Q7 cabinets, an M20 threaded flange in the top panel of the Q-SUB accepts the d&b Z5013 Loudspeaker stand M20 with winder. This allows for the deployment of full-range Q7 cabinets, often in conjunction with the Z5150 Q Swivel bracket and the Z5024 High stand adapter, providing flexible setup options.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the Q-SUB and its associated accessories. Users are advised to regularly check the loudspeaker housings and accessories for any visible signs of wear and tear. Damaged components should be replaced promptly to maintain structural integrity and performance. All load-bearing bolts in mounting devices should also be checked regularly to ensure they are secure.

The acoustically transparent foam covering the front grill is replaceable, allowing for easy refurbishment if it becomes damaged or worn.

It is important to note that loudspeakers, including the Q-SUB, produce a static magnetic field even when not connected or in use. Therefore, during erection and transportation, care must be taken to keep the loudspeakers away from equipment and objects that could be impaired or damaged by an external magnetic field. A general guideline suggests maintaining a distance of at least 0.5 meters (1.5 ft) from magnetic data carriers (such as floppy disks, audio and video tapes, bank cards) and more than 1 meter (3 ft) from computer and video monitors.
