Overview

The MagnaLatch® ALERT is a child safety gate latch with an integrated electronic alarm system, designed to provide an audible and visual alert when a gate is opened and remains unlatched. This device is ideal for locations where children need protection, such as play areas or swimming pools, signaling when the latch is not fully engaged and providing its intended protection. It is important to note that the MagnaLatch® ALERT is not a substitute for adult supervision.

Function Description:

The core function of the MagnaLatch® ALERT is to monitor the state of a gate latch and trigger an alarm if the gate is opened and not properly re-latched. When the gate is closed and the latch is engaged, the system is active. If the gate is opened, an immediate acknowledgment beep and flashing lights occur. This is followed by a delay of 8 seconds. If the gate remains open after this delay, a first warning is issued, accompanied by beeps and flashing lights. After another 2-second delay, a second warning is given, again with beeps and flashing lights. A further 2-second delay leads to a third warning. If the gate is still not closed and latched, the alarm escalates to an accelerating alarm with continuous beeps and flashing lights, eventually reaching a full alarm state. Closing and latching the gate at any point will reset the alarm cycle.

The device also features a low battery warning. When the battery strength falls below an acceptable level, a unique downward chirping sound will occur each time the gate is opened, indicating that the battery is running low and needs replacement.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The MagnaLatch® ALERT is specifically designed to fit and work with MagnaLatch "Series 3" Top Pull and Vertical Pull models only. It will not fit or work with any other gate latch or previous MagnaLatch® model. The installation involves attaching the ALERT module to the latch body by sliding the top of the module underneath the top housing, snapping it into place from the top, and then snapping the bottom section into place, ensuring it is fully secured at all positions.
  • Powering Up: To power up the device, the front cover must be removed by unscrewing it with a #1 Phillips-head screwdriver. The battery (type ER14250 - 1/2 AA, 3.6V Lithium Thionyl Chloride) is then inserted into the battery compartment with the (+) symbol on top and the (-) on the bottom. After battery insertion, the gate should be opened and closed 5 times to calibrate the system and ensure the battery operates at peak performance. A false low battery sounding may occur during calibration. Finally, the front cover and screw are re-attached.
  • Disarm Feature (Optional): The MagnaLatch® ALERT comes from the factory with the Disarm feature de-activated. This feature allows for temporary disarming of the alarm for a maximum of 15 minutes. To activate it, the gate must be open. The front cover is removed, and a paper clip is inserted into a specific hole located between the paper clip image and the On/Off symbol. Pressing it once will activate the Disarm feature, indicated by a "ramp-up" sound. If pressed twice, a "ramp-down" sound will be heard, indicating de-activation.
  • Temporary Disarming: To temporarily disarm the ALERT, the gate must be opened and held open until a second beep sounds. Then, a finger is placed on top of the Disarm Sensor and held for 5 seconds. Four beeps followed by a "ramp-up" sound will confirm that the ALERT is de-activated for up to 15 minutes, as long as the gate remains open. The Disarm Sensor is touch-sensitive to skin only and will not operate when wearing gloves. Closing and latching the gate at any time will re-arm the ALERT module. It is crucial not to disarm the ALERT on a pool or spa gate, as this presents a danger to children.
  • Stopping the Alarm: The alarm can be silenced simply by closing and latching the gate.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: When the low battery warning sounds, the battery needs to be replaced. For best results, use battery type ER14250 (1/2 AA - 3.6V). The replacement process is similar to the initial powering up: remove the front cover, replace the battery, calibrate by opening and closing the gate 5 times, and then re-attach the cover.
  • Cleaning: The MagnaLatch® ALERT should be kept clean and free of debris that might impair its performance. It is important not to use any abrasive or harsh chemicals for cleaning and not to use a pressure hose.
  • Troubleshooting: If the gate is closed but the alarm continues, ensure the MagnaLatch® ALERT is properly aligned and securely latched. If the disarm touch sensor is not working, verify that the Disarm feature has been activated. If the alarm is not as loud as when first purchased, the battery cover (or horn) might be blocked with debris; remove the cover, clean the opening, and replace it. For any persistent issues, contacting D&D Technologies is recommended.
  • Environmental Protection: Waste electrical products and Lithium Thionyl Chloride batteries should not be disposed of with household waste. Batteries should be returned to a point of purchase or appropriate battery collection center for recycling. Consult local authorities or retailers for recycling advice.
