In the image above, the Gamut Warning is set to medium gray. The medium gray
sections of the image represent colors the selected printer cannot reach. Some of
these are dark colors more saturated than the printer can manage in such dark tones.
Such colors sometimes appear muddy or dull in images. Other gray areas represent
bright colors that the printer cannot reach due to their saturation. Using Photoshop
tools such as the desaturation sponge or selective color adjustment can bring these
colors into gamut in a user controlled manner.
Advanced Topic: Profile Editing for Closer SoftProofing
Once SoftProofing settings have been configured, and a range of test images printed,
users may choose to adjust the printer profile itself (not just its Ref Black and White
settings) to achieve a closer match between the SoftProof and its matching printout,
and the non-SoftProofed image seen in most applications, and in Photoshop without
custom proofing turned on. Adjustments to the brightness slider are the most common
edit made to bring SoftProofed views into closer alignment with non-SoftProofed views
of the same image.
