Overview

The Davis & Waddell Essentials Electric Knife Sharpener (Model D1517) is a household appliance designed to sharpen knives, scissors, and screwdrivers. It features a two-stage grinding process, offering both coarse and fine grinding to achieve optimal sharpness. The sharpener is equipped with non-slip feet to ensure stability during use and includes removable drawers for easy cleaning of metal dusts. For user safety, it incorporates overheat protection.

Function Description:

The primary function of this electric sharpener is to restore the sharpness of various cutting tools. It utilizes a two-stage grinding system:

  • Stage 1 - Coarse Grind: This stage is designed for initial sharpening, particularly for duller blades. Users insert the knife into the right slot of the coarse grinding wheel at approximately a 16-degree angle, ensuring the handle or bolster is as close to the grinding slots as possible. The knife is then drawn slowly towards the user, maintaining constant light downward pressure without twisting. For curved knives, the handle should be lifted slightly as the tip approaches the end of the slot to maintain constant pressure on the blade contour. This process is repeated on the left slot of the coarse grinding wheel, alternating between right and left slots three times on each side to ensure the entire blade is sharpened and the blade edge proportions are maintained. Each pull typically takes 2-3 seconds for short blades, 4-5 seconds for a 20cm blade, and 6 seconds for longer blades. The maximum operating time for this stage is 2 minutes.
  • Stage 2 - Fine Grind: Following the coarse grind, the same process is repeated using the right and left slots of the fine grinding wheel. This stage refines the blade edge, providing a sharper finish.

Beyond knives, the sharpener can also be used for:

  • Scissors: To sharpen scissors, the blade is guided slowly through the tools sharpening slot with constant pressure.
  • Flat Head Screwdrivers: The tip of the screwdriver is inserted into the slot and ground for short periods to avoid over-grinding.

The appliance is activated by plugging it in and turning the switch to the "ON" position, which illuminates a red light.
