AM Series
Single Leg Hydraulic Jack: 12,000# Capacity
Installation
Tools Required for Installation
Ratchet, sockets and wrench set
Wire cutters / crimpers
Electric drill and bits
Screw gun bit
Welding equipment (if welding jack in place)
Additional Parts Needed for Installation
# 4 gauge power wire (to connect battery +12V Positive
to the Pump)
# 4 gauge ground wire (to connect battery -12V Ground to Pump)
# 4 gauge ring terminals
Loom clips (to secure switch and harness to the trailer)
Self tapping screws or pop rivets (to secure loom clips)
Wire tie
Jack
Your AM Jack may have been provided with a mounting flange or bracket (depending on the
mounting option ordered for your system). When Bolting the Jack to the trailer we recommend using
Grade 8 bolts. Welding the Jack in place requires sound welding practices.
The Jack should be mounted so that when the trailer is level (while mounted to the tow vehicle) there is
10 inches Minimum of Ground Clearance. This is usually achieved by mounting the jack so that the
foot is slightly below the bottom edge of trailer. The bottom of the footpad should not be lower than
any other Item mounted on the trailer.

Overview

This document describes the Equalizer Systems AM Series Single Leg Hydraulic Jack, a hydraulic leveling system designed for trailers. The manual provides detailed instructions for installation, operation, and troubleshooting, along with warranty information.

Function Description

The Equalizer Systems AM Series Single Leg Hydraulic Jack is designed to raise and lower a trailer using a hydraulic system. It provides a stable and level platform for the trailer, whether for storage, maintenance, or use. The system is operated via a rocker switch, allowing the user to extend or retract the jack. A key feature is its ability to hold a position by releasing the switch, with positive check valves preventing the jack from bleeding down, even under load. The system can be powered by the trailer's 12V battery.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Capacity: 12,000 lbs
  • Power Requirement: 12V DC battery.
  • Minimum Ground Clearance: 10 inches when the trailer is level and mounted to the tow vehicle. The footpad should not be lower than any other item on the trailer.
  • Fluid Type: Dexron III automatic transmission fluid (the same as used for a GM automobile).
  • Circuit Protection (for Pumps #'s 2142, 2390, 2532, 3126, 3170): An 80 amp (minimum) circuit breaker is recommended for the positive (+12V) battery lead.
  • Wire Gauge (for Pumps #'s 2142, 2390, 2532, 3126, 3170): #4 gauge wire for both positive (+12V) and negative (-12V) battery connections.
  • Wire Gauge (for Pumps #'s 3040, 3041, 3200, 3201, 3201KS): Minimum #6 gauge wire for both positive (+12V) and negative (-) battery connections to the contactor.
  • Switch Disconnect Rating: Minimum 100 ampere DC for power disconnect switches used to isolate the system during travel or inactivity (if a key switch is not supplied).
  • Manual Override Drill Speed (Output Shaft): Minimum 2000 rpm for the drill to develop appropriate pressure output.
  • Manual Override Hex Key/Socket Size (Output Shaft): 1/4" (6mm) Allen Drive Hex Key or 7/16" (11mm) Hex Head Socket.

Usage Features

  • Ease of Operation: Simple push-and-hold rocker switch for extending and retracting the jack.
  • Position Hold: The jack maintains its position when the switch is released, thanks to positive check valves.
  • Mounting Options: Can be bolted (using Grade 8 bolts) or welded to the trailer.
  • Safety Features:
    • Keyed Switch (if equipped): The key should be removed when the jack is not in use or during transit to prevent accidental operation.
    • Power Disconnect Switch (if no key switch): A minimum 100 ampere DC disconnect switch is required to fully isolate the system during travel or inactivity.
    • Jack Stands: Always use jack stands of appropriate rating to support the trailer's weight when working under or near it, as hydraulic systems can fail.
  • Manual Override:
    • Hand Pump (for Pumps # 2142 & 3126, 3170): Allows for manual extension and retraction by pumping a handle. Retraction requires pulling out and turning a red knurled knob on the directional valve.
    • Output Shaft (for Pumps #'s 2390, 2532, 3040, 3041, 3043, 3200, 3201, 3201KS): Allows for manual operation using a drill with a hex bit. Retraction for uni-rotational pumps involves shifting a red knurled knob and running the drill clockwise. For bi-rotational pumps, retraction is counter-clockwise and extension is clockwise, without needing to shift the directional valve.
  • Fluid Level Check: When fully retracted, the fluid level in the reservoir should be approximately one inch below the fill cap.

Maintenance Features

  • Fluid Management: The system uses Dexron III automatic transmission fluid. Regular checks of the fluid level are recommended, especially when the jack is fully retracted.
  • Breather Cap: For units shipped assembled and filled with fluid, the flush-mounted fill plug must be removed and replaced with a breather cap after installation to prevent erratic operation.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a section to address common issues:
    • "The jack runs for a few seconds, then stops": Suggests a weak or diminished battery capacity.
    • "The jack only runs in one direction": Points to battery voltage issues, incorrect wiring, or insufficient battery capacity to operate the motor and shift the directional valve.
    • "I push the switch and nothing happens": Emphasizes checking positive and negative 12V connections, battery charge, and overall wiring. A discharged battery is a common cause.
    • "The jack is jerky when retracting": May indicate air in the system, low fluid level, or incorrect hose installation. Purging the jack by adding fluid and cycling it through full extension and retraction is recommended.
  • Warranty: A two-year limited warranty covers defects in material and workmanship for single and dual jack system components from the original sale date of the vehicle. Labor and freight expenses for warrantable defects are reimbursed for one year. Prior authorization is required for all warranty claims and returns.
  • Replacement Parts: Replacement parts are warranted for the remainder of the original warranty or 90 days, whichever is longer, with proof of repair and original vehicle purchase dates required.
