The DEIF Multi-line 2 (ML-2) unit is a versatile control and protection system designed for generator sets. This document focuses on the conversion and upgrade from a PPU-2 to a PPU-3 system, providing essential information for installation, parameter setup, and general standard conversions. The ML-2 unit is a modular system, with its housing divided into board slot positions for various printed circuit boards (PCBs) that provide standard functionalities and options.
The ML-2 unit, specifically the PPU (Protection and Paralleling Unit) variant, is designed to manage and protect generator sets, particularly in paralleling applications. It handles critical functions such as power supply, CPU operations, self-check status, relay outputs, digital inputs, and transistor outputs. The unit also incorporates modules for load distribution, offering additional digital inputs and relay outputs. A key aspect is its measurement module, which handles 3-phase current and generator/busbar voltage measurements.
The PPU-3, as an upgraded version, builds upon the PPU-2's capabilities, integrating many of its options as standard software features. For instance, several over-/under-voltage and frequency protections, as well as reactive power protections (import/export), which were optional in PPU-2 (B1, C1), are now standard in PPU-3. The PPU-3 also introduces new options like "Positive sequence voltage low" (Option A4) and "Directional over-current" (Option A5), expanding its protective capabilities.
The unit supports various communication interfaces, including CANopen, Modbus RTU, Profibus DP, and CAN bus for external I/O modules (Beckhoff), as well as J1939 for engine communication. These interfaces facilitate integration into larger control systems and allow for remote monitoring and control.
A significant feature in PPU-3 is the M-Logic functionality, which is included as a standard, option-independent function. M-Logic is a simple, logic-based tool that allows users to define one or more input conditions to trigger specific outputs. This enables the execution of different commands at predefined conditions, such as activating relay outputs, changing genset modes, or altering running modes, effectively substituting simple PLC functions.
The ML-2 unit is designed for ease of use and configuration through PC utility software. This software, available in versions specific to PPU-2 (1.x) and PPU-3 (3.x), allows for comprehensive parameter setup, including nominal settings for frequency, power, current, and voltage. The PPU-3 offers enhanced flexibility in regulator governor setup, with added differential band adjustments.
The display units for PPU-2 and PPU-3 have different appearances, with PPU-3 offering a more modern interface. Options for engine control (Y1) and displays without control buttons (Y11) are available.
Mode selection in PPU-3 is more streamlined, configured directly through the utility software's I/O settings, unlike PPU-2's reliance on combinations of digital inputs. This simplifies the process of switching between modes such as fixed frequency, fixed power, droop, and load sharing.
The PPU-3 also introduces "Fail class" in protection parameters, allowing users to define specific actions (e.g., Trip of GB, Warning shutdown) when an alarm condition is met. Inhibits can also be configured within the protection parameters.
The modular design of the ML-2 unit, with its board slot positions, likely facilitates easier maintenance and replacement of individual PCBs. The PC utility software is a crucial tool for maintenance, enabling backup of parameter files, which is strongly recommended before any unit is powered down or upgraded. This ensures that settings can be restored quickly if needed.
The unit's self-check status output provides an indication of its operational health. For external communication via Modbus, PPU-3 offers backward compatibility with PPU-2 Modbus addresses, configurable via parameter 7514. This allows for a smoother transition during upgrades while maintaining compatibility with existing Modbus systems. However, it's important to note that the USB service port and Ethernet port (option N) will always use the PPU-3 Modbus address list.
Regular checks of factory settings are emphasized, as these are average values and may not be optimal for a specific engine/generator set. This highlights the importance of proper commissioning and parameter tuning for reliable operation. The unit is not to be opened by unauthorized personnel to maintain warranty validity.
