Overview

This document describes the De'Longhi CGH902 contact grill, a versatile cooking appliance designed for household use.

Function Description

The De'Longhi CGH902 is a multi-functional cooking appliance that can operate in three main positions:

  • Closed position (Contact Grill/Panini Press): In this mode, the lower plate/cover rests on the upper plate/base, acting as a contact grill or panini press. It's ideal for cooking hamburgers, deboned meat, thin meat slices, vegetables, sandwiches, and quesadillas. The food cooks quickly as it's in contact with both plates simultaneously. The appliance features a special handgrip and hinge that allow the cover to adjust to the thickness of the food, ensuring even cooking. Light pressure can be applied to the handle to press and heat sandwiches to your liking. For traditional-style panini sandwiches with grill marks, grill plates are recommended.
  • Open position (Open Grill): The lower plate/cover is open at 100° with respect to the base, doubling the cooking surface. This mode is suitable for preparing hamburgers, steak, chicken (though chicken on the bone is not recommended for even cooking), and fish. It allows for grilling cuts of meat with different thicknesses and preferred cooking levels. In this position, the cover is fully open, creating a double flat cooking surface, and food needs to be turned during cooking.
  • Flat position (Griddle - Model CGH902 only): In this fully open position, the lower plate/cover is level with the upper plate/base, forming a large cooking surface. This mode is specifically for use as a griddle to prepare pancakes, eggs, cheese, fritters, bacon, and sausages for breakfast. It enables simultaneous preparation of various foods without mixing flavors, or cooking more of the same food. Food needs to be turned during cooking in this mode.

The appliance is equipped with a Mode selector to choose between Grill/Panini or Griddle functions. It also has a Grill/Panini thermostat dial (adjusts temperature from 175°F (80°C) to 450°F (230°C)) and a Griddle plate thermostat dial (adjusts temperature from WARM to SEAR).

Important Technical Specifications

  • Base and cover: Solid stainless steel structure with a self-adjusting cover.
  • Panini-Style Handle: Strong cast metal handgrip designed to adjust the cover according to food thickness.
  • Removable plates: Non-stick and dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. Two types are available:
    • Grill plates: For grilling steak, hamburger, chicken, and vegetables.
    • Griddle plates: For pancakes, eggs, bacon, and shellfish (model CGH902 only).
  • Grease drip cups: Collect grease, dishwasher safe.
  • Power cord: A short power-supply cord is provided to reduce entanglement risk. Longer detachable power-supply cords are available for use with care. If a longer cord or extension cord is used, its electrical rating must be at least as great as the appliance's rating, and if grounded, it must be a 3-wire cord. The cord should be arranged to avoid draping over surfaces where it can be pulled or tripped over.
  • Electrical rating: The marked electrical rating of any extension cord or detachable power-supply cord should be at least as great as the electrical rating of the appliance.

Usage Features

  • First Use Preparation: Before initial use, remove all packaging and labels. Clean the base, cover, and dials with a damp cloth. Thoroughly clean the cooking plates, grease drip cups, and cleaning tool.
  • Heating Up: After selecting a cooking mode, the red ON light illuminates. The appliance takes up to eight minutes to heat up, depending on the set temperature. The green "ready" light comes on when the desired temperature is reached. The thermostat regulates the temperature, so the light may cycle on and off during use.
  • Plate Insertion and Removal: Plates are labeled "lower" or "upper" and are inserted by aligning the back of the plate with metal supports, sliding it on, and pushing the front down until it clicks. To remove, press the plate release buttons to eject the plate, then slide it off the supports. Plates should only be removed or changed when the appliance has cooled down.
  • Grease Management: When used as a contact grill, one grease drip cup is placed directly under the grease drain opening. For grill/barbecue or griddle plate use, both cups are used, placed under the drain opening of each plate.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always read all instructions before use.
    • Do not touch hot surfaces; use handles or knobs.
    • Do not immerse the cord or plug in water or other liquids.
    • Close supervision is necessary when children are nearby.
    • Unplug from the outlet when not in use and before cleaning. Allow to cool before handling parts or cleaning.
    • Do not operate with a damaged cord, plug, or if the appliance has malfunctioned. Return to an authorized service center for repair.
    • Do not use accessory attachments not recommended by the manufacturer.
    • Do not use outdoors.
    • Do not let the power cord hang over edges or touch hot surfaces.
    • Do not place on or near hot gas/electric burners or in a heated oven.
    • Unplug when finished using.
    • Do not use for purposes other than intended.
    • Exercise extreme caution when moving an appliance containing hot oil or other hot liquids.
    • To disconnect, turn the control to OFF and remove the plug.
    • Only authorized personnel should perform repairs to reduce the risk of fire or electric shock.
    • The first time the appliance is used, a slight odor and smoke may occur, which is normal for non-stick surfaces.
    • Always use an oven mitt if adjusting the cover during cooking, as die-cast aluminum parts become very hot. The upper plate housing, made of plastic, may become hot but poses no burn risk.
    • Allow the appliance to cool for at least 30 minutes before performing any operations on it.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning Tool: A special black cleaning tool is supplied to clean plates after the appliance has completely cooled (at least 30 minutes). Using the tool on hot plates may cause it to melt.
  • General Cleaning:
    • Always ensure the appliance has cooled down completely before cleaning (at least 30 minutes).
    • Turn the selector to "0" and unplug from the mains.
    • The cleaning tool can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher.
    • Empty and wash the grease drip cups by hand or in the dishwasher.
    • The cooking plates are dishwasher safe, but frequent washing may reduce the properties of the ceramic coating.
    • Do not use metal objects to clean the plates.
  • User Maintenance Guidelines:
    • Never use metal tools that could scratch the non-stick plates; use wood or heat-resistant plastic tools.
    • Do not leave plastic tools in contact with hot plates, including the supplied cleaning tool.
    • Between cooking different foods, remove food residues through the grease drain opening, collect them in the drip cup, clean with kitchen paper, and then proceed with the next cooking operation.
