This document describes the DEWALT D25960 and D25961 Demolition Hammers, professional power tools designed for heavy-duty demolition and breaking applications. These tools are not intended for use in wet conditions or in the presence of flammable liquids or gases.
The demolition hammers are designed for chiselling operations. They feature an active vibration control system that neutralises rebound vibration from the hammer mechanism, reducing hand and arm vibration. This allows for more comfortable use over longer periods and extends the unit's lifespan. The tools are equipped with a robust motor and a specialized tool holder for chisels.
General Operation: The tool is operated using an on/off switch. To switch on, set the on/off switch to position 1; to switch off, set it to position 0. The tool must always be held with two hands during operation. For horizontal applications, one hand should be on the side handle and the other on the main handle. For vertical applications, both hands should be on the main handle. It is crucial to maintain proper footing and balance at all times for better control in unexpected situations.
Chisel Installation and Removal: The D25960 uses 28 mm hex shank chisels, while the D25961 uses 30 mm hex shank chisels. Only DEWALT recommended accessories should be used. Before installing or removing accessories, the tool must be turned off and disconnected from the power source. Gloves should always be worn when changing accessories, as exposed metal parts can become extremely hot.
To fit a chisel with a groove in the shank (D25960): Pull the tool retainer to the unlock position, hold the chisel with the groove facing upwards, insert the shank into the tool holder, and push the retainer backwards to lock it. Pull on the chisel to ensure it is properly locked. The hammering function requires the chisel to move axially several centimetres when locked. To remove, pull back the retainer and pull the chisel out.
To fit a chisel with a collar on the shank (D25960): Pull the tool retainer to the unlock position, insert the chisel shank into the tool holder, and push the retainer in line with the accessory shank to lock it. Pull on the chisel to check proper locking.
To fit a chisel with a groove in the shank (D25961): Pull the retainer bolt and turn it 180° to the unlock position, hold the chisel with the groove facing upwards, insert the shank into the tool holder, and pull the retainer bolt and turn it 180° back to the lock position. Pull on the chisel to check proper locking. To remove, pull the retainer bolt and turn it 180° to the unlock position.
Side Handle Adjustment: The side handle can be adjusted to suit both right- and left-hand users. To adjust, loosen the clamp knob, rotate the side handle to the desired position, and then tighten the clamp knob to secure it. The machine must always be operated with the side handle properly mounted.
Working Practices: When operating, apply a pressure of approximately 20-30 kg to the tool. Excessive force will not speed up chiselling and may decrease tool performance and shorten tool life. Always switch off the tool when work is finished and before unplugging. When working above ground level, ensure the area below is clear. In cold weather or after long periods of disuse, let the tool run with no load for several minutes before use.
Safety Precautions: Users must always wear ear protectors and eye protection. The auxiliary handles supplied with the tool must be used to prevent loss of control and potential personal injury. When performing operations where the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring or its own cord, hold power tools by insulated gripping surfaces. Ensure the material being drilled does not conceal electric or gas services, and their locations have been verified with utility companies. Keep a firm grip on the tool with both hands; operating with one hand can lead to loss of control, especially when breaking through or encountering hard materials like re-bar. Do not touch the chisel or nearby parts immediately after operation, as they can be extremely hot and cause burns. Always direct the power cable to the rear, away from the chisel. Avoid operating the tool for long periods, as vibration may be harmful to hands and arms. Use gloves and take frequent rest periods to limit exposure.
General Maintenance: DEWALT power tools are designed for long-term operation with minimal maintenance. Continuous satisfactory operation relies on proper tool care and regular cleaning. The machine is not user-serviceable; it should be taken to an authorised DEWALT repair agent periodically.
Electrical Safety: The electric motor is designed for a specific voltage, which must match the power supply. DEWALT tools are double insulated, so no earth wire is required. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by a specially prepared cord available through a DEWALT service organization. For UK & Ireland, if a new mains plug is needed, dispose of the old plug safely, connect the brown lead to the live terminal, and the blue lead to the neutral terminal. No connection should be made to the earth terminal. Follow fitting instructions for good quality plugs; a 13 A fuse is recommended. For 115 V units exceeding 1500 W, a plug to BS4343 standard is recommended, and operation should be via a fail-safe isolating transformer with an earth screen between the primary and secondary winding. If an extension cable is required, use an approved 3-core cable suitable for the tool's power input, with a minimum conductor size of 1.5 mm² and a maximum length of 30 m. When using a cable reel, unwind the cable completely.
Chisel Maintenance (Grinding and Forging): For best results, only use sharp chisel bits. Frequent sharpening guarantees long life and best performance. Chisels can be ground on grinding discs with continuous water flow. Specific angles apply for pointed, flat, wide scaling, and clay spade chisels. For forging, heat the chisel to 850-1050°C (light red-yellow). To re-harden, heat the chisel to 900°C, quench it in oil, then place it in an oven for 1 hour at 320°C (light blue). Ensure the cutting edge does not show discolouration from excessive pressure, as this can impair hardness. Chisels can be reground only a limited number of times; consult your dealer if in doubt.
Lubrication: The power tool requires no additional lubrication.
Cleaning: Blow dirt and dust out of the main housing with dry air as often as dirt is seen collecting in and around the air vents. Wear eye protection during this procedure. Never use solvents or other harsh chemicals for cleaning the non-metallic parts of the tool, as these chemicals may weaken the materials. Use a cloth dampened only with water and mild soap. Never allow liquid to enter the tool or immerse any part of it in liquid.
Environmental Protection: The product must not be disposed of with normal household waste. Separate collection of used products and packaging allows materials to be recycled and reused, preventing environmental pollution and reducing demand for raw materials. Local regulations may provide for separate collection of electrical products. DEWALT offers a facility for collection and recycling of its products at the end of their working life; products can be returned to any authorised repair agent.
