Overview

This document describes the DEWALT 18V Cordless Impact Wrench, model DCF900, a professional power tool designed for impact fastening applications. It is intended for driving fasteners in wood, metal, and concrete.

Function Description

The DCF900 is an 18V cordless impact wrench that operates with DEWALT battery packs. It features a variable speed trigger switch (1) that allows the user to control the tool's speed; the more the trigger is squeezed, the faster the tool operates. For maximum tool life, variable speed should only be used for starting holes or fasteners, as continuous use in this range is not recommended and may damage the switch. The tool is equipped with a brake that stops the anvil when the trigger switch is fully released.

A forward/reverse control button (2) determines the direction of rotation and also functions as a lock-off button. To select forward rotation, the user releases the trigger switch and depresses the forward/reverse control button on the right side of the tool. For reverse, the trigger switch is released, and the control button on the left side is depressed. The center position of this button locks the tool in the off position. It is important to ensure the trigger is released when changing the control button's position. A clicking sound may be heard on startup after changing the direction of rotation, which is normal and does not indicate a problem.

The tool includes a mode selector (7) that allows the user to choose between three speeds (Low, Medium, High) or the Precision Wrench™ mode. This selection should be based on the maximum speed/torque required for the application. The Precision Wrench™ mode offers greater control in both fastening and loosening. In forward, it fastens at 820 RPM until impact, then pauses for 0.75 seconds before continuing. In reverse, it impacts at a normal speed and rate, ceasing impact and reducing speed once the fastener breaks free to prevent "run-off" of loose hardware.

The DCF900 is equipped with an Electronic Protection System (EPS) that safeguards the battery pack against overloading, overheating, or deep discharge. If the EPS engages, the tool will automatically turn off, and the battery pack must be placed on the charger until fully charged.

Usage Features

To use the impact wrench, ensure the battery pack (5) is fully charged and properly inserted into the tool handle. The battery pack aligns with rails inside the handle and locks into place with an audible snap. To remove the battery pack, press the release button (4) and pull the pack out of the handle.

The tool's worklight (6) activates when the variable speed trigger (1) is depressed. The worklight switch (9) can be pressed repeatedly to cycle through low illumination, high illumination, and off. This worklight is intended for lighting the immediate work surface and not as a flashlight.

When installing an accessory on the hog ring anvil (3), firmly push the accessory onto the anvil. The hog ring (12) compresses to allow the accessory to slide on, and once installed, it applies pressure for retention. To remove an accessory, grasp it and firmly pull it off. Only impact accessories should be used; non-impact accessories may break and cause hazardous conditions. Anvils and hog rings should be inspected for damage before use.

Proper hand position is crucial for safety. One hand should be on the main handle (8). Always hold the tool securely in anticipation of a sudden reaction. The user should always observe safety instructions and applicable regulations.

Maintenance Features

The DEWALT impact wrench is designed for long-term operation with minimal maintenance, relying on proper tool care and regular cleaning. The charger and battery pack are not serviceable.

For cleaning, dirt and dust should be blown out of the main housing with dry air, especially from the air vents. Approved eye protection and a dust mask should be worn during this procedure. Solvents or harsh chemicals should never be used on the non-metallic parts of the tool, as they can weaken the materials. Instead, a cloth dampened with water and mild soap should be used. No liquid should enter the tool, and no part of the tool should be immersed in liquid.

The charger should be disconnected from the AC outlet before cleaning. Dirt and grease can be removed from the exterior of the charger with a cloth or soft non-metallic brush. No water or cleaning solutions should be used, and no liquid should enter the charger.

Battery packs should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat or cold, ideally at room temperature, for optimal performance and life. For long-term storage, fully charged battery packs are recommended. Battery packs should not be stored completely depleted and will need to be recharged before use.

The DCB118 charger is equipped with an internal fan that activates automatically to cool the battery pack when needed. The charger should not be operated if the fan is not working properly or if ventilation slots are blocked. Foreign objects should not enter the charger's interior.

The charger is designed to be wall-mountable or used upright on a table. When wall-mounting, it should be located within reach of an electrical outlet and away from obstructions. Drywall screws (purchased separately) at least 25.4 mm long, with a screw head diameter of 7-9 mm, screwed into wood to an optimal depth (leaving approximately 5.5 mm exposed), should be used to secure the charger. The slots on the back of the charger align with the exposed screws for engagement.
