It is not intended for use in wet conditions or in the presence of flammable liquids or gases, and children should not be allowed to use the tool. Inexperienced operators require supervision.
The hedge trimmer is operated by a two-hand switch system for safety. To start the tool, squeeze and hold the bail handle (5) with one hand, pulling the front part back into the body. Then, push the lock-off switch (2) forward and squeeze the trigger switch (1). Once the unit is running, the lock-off switch can be released, but the trigger must remain squeezed for continuous operation. Releasing the trigger turns the unit off. It is crucial never to attempt to lock a switch in the ON position. The trimmer is designed for cutting normal shrubbery around houses and buildings, and stems greater than 19 mm should not be cut.
Proper hand position is essential for safe operation, requiring one hand on the switch handle (3) and the other on the bail handle (5). Users should maintain proper footing and balance and avoid overreaching. Always wear safety goggles and non-skid footwear.
For trimming new growth, a wide, sweeping motion, feeding the blade teeth through the twigs, is most effective. A slight downward tilt of the blade in the direction of motion provides the best cutting. To achieve exceptionally level hedges, a string can be stretched along the length of the hedge as a guide. For side trimming, orient the trimmer as shown in the manual, starting at the bottom and sweeping upwards.
The DCMHT563 operates on an 18-volt Li-Ion battery pack. DEWALT chargers require no adjustment and are designed for ease of use. The electric motor is designed for one voltage only, so users must ensure the battery pack and charger voltage correspond to the mains supply. DEWALT chargers are double insulated, eliminating the need for an earth wire. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by DEWALT or an authorized service organization.
To charge a battery, plug the charger into an appropriate outlet, then insert the battery pack (9) into the charger until it is fully seated. A blinking red light indicates charging has started. A continuously ON red light signifies a full charge. The battery pack can then be used or left in the charger. To remove the battery, press the release button (10) on the battery pack. For maximum performance and life, Li-Ion battery packs should be fully charged before first use.
Some DEWALT battery packs feature a fuel gauge with three green LED lights (11) to indicate the remaining charge. Pressing and holding the fuel gauge button illuminates these lights. If the charge level is below the usable limit, the lights will not illuminate, and the battery needs recharging. The fuel gauge is an indication of charge level and may vary based on product components, temperature, and end-user application.
The charger automatically initiates a Hot/Cold Pack Delay if the battery is too hot or too cold, suspending charging until an appropriate temperature is reached. This feature ensures maximum battery pack life. A cold battery pack will charge slower than a warm one. The DCB118 charger includes an internal fan to cool the battery pack, which activates automatically when needed. The charger should not be operated if the fan is not working properly or if ventilation slots are blocked.
DEWALT XR Li-Ion tools are equipped with an Electronic Protection System that safeguards the battery pack against overloading, overheating, or deep discharge. If this system engages, the tool will automatically turn off, and the battery pack should be placed on the charger until fully charged.
The DEWALT hedge trimmer is designed for long-term operation with minimal maintenance. Regular cleaning and proper tool care are essential for satisfactory performance. Before making any adjustments, removing/installing attachments, or storing the tool, always turn it off and disconnect the battery pack to prevent accidental start-up. The charger and battery pack are not serviceable.
After each use, the blades should be carefully cleaned with a resin solvent. A light film of lubrication should then be applied to the exposed blade. Turn the trimmer vertically with the blades facing the ground and run it for a few seconds to disperse the lubrication. Finally, slide the sheath (7) over the blade until it snaps into place.
For cleaning, blow dirt and dust out of the main housing with dry air, especially from around the air vents. Approved eye protection and a dust mask should be worn during this procedure. Never use solvents or harsh chemicals on non-metallic parts of the tool, as these can weaken the materials. Use a cloth dampened with water and mild soap. Never allow liquid to enter the tool or immerse any part of it.
Regularly check the blades for damage and wear. Do not use the tool if the blades are damaged. Avoid hard objects like metal wire or railings when trimming. If such an object is accidentally hit, immediately switch off the tool and check for damage. If the tool vibrates abnormally, switch it off, remove the battery, and check for damage. If the tool stalls, switch it off and remove the battery before attempting to clear any obstructions. After use, always fit the supplied blade sheath over the blades and store the tool safely, ensuring the blade is not exposed. Always ensure all guards are fitted when using the tool, and never attempt to use an incomplete tool or one with unauthorized modifications.
