Overview

The JUDGE™ Varmint-Proof Feeder is a robust and reliable device designed for automated deer feeding, ensuring consistent feed distribution while protecting against varmint interference. This guide provides comprehensive information on its setup, operation, and maintenance.

Function Description:

The primary function of the JUDGE™ feeder is to automatically dispense feed, typically corn, at pre-programmed times. It features a varmint-proof design to prevent animals other than deer from accessing the feed, thereby reducing waste and ensuring feed is available for the intended wildlife. The system integrates a motor, timer, and solar panel for autonomous operation, making it suitable for remote locations. The timer allows for precise control over feeding schedules and durations, ensuring efficient feed management.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Source: The feeder operates on a standard 12-volt prong-top feeder battery (not included).
  • Timer: The integrated timer allows for up to six programmable feed times per day (P1-P6). Each feed time can be set for a specific duration, controlling the amount of feed dispensed. The timer also features a clock function (AM/PM display) for accurate scheduling.
  • Solar Panel: A solar panel is included to continuously charge the 12V battery, extending the feeder's operational life without frequent battery replacements. The solar panel's angle can be adjusted for optimal sun exposure.
  • Construction: The feeder assembly includes a hopper, motor, timer, and solar panel. The legs are attached with bolts, nuts, and washers, requiring specific socket/wrench sizes (7/16" for JDG-200/300 models and 1/2" for JDG-600/1000 models).
  • Varmint-Proof Design: The feeder is specifically engineered to be varmint-proof, protecting the feed from unwanted animals.
  • Warranty: The JUDGE™ Varmint-Proof Feeders come with a 5-year limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. This warranty excludes damage from neglect, abuse, acts of God, animals/livestock, hardware, shipping costs, improper assembly/connections, and injury. Motor and electronic components have a separate 1-year limited manufacturer warranty.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The feeder requires assembly of the legs to the main feeder body using provided hardware. Washers should be used on each side of the leg bracket, and nuts should be tightened securely but not overtightened to prevent bolt shear.
  • Battery Installation: A 12-volt prong-top feeder battery (not included) must be installed. The timer and solar panel wires are connected to the battery terminals, ensuring red wires connect to positive and black wires to negative.
  • Timer Programming:
    • Setting the Clock: The "SET CLOCK" button is used to adjust the hour and minute using the "HR" and "MIN" buttons. The AM/PM setting changes automatically when passing 12:00. Holding down the buttons speeds up time adjustment.
    • Programming Feed Times: Pressing "P1" (or P2-P6 for additional times) allows programming of specific feed times using "HR" and "MIN" buttons. The "RUN TIME" button sets the duration (in seconds) for which the motor will spin.
  • Testing: A "TEST" button on the timer allows users to confirm proper connection of the motor, battery, and timer. The motor will engage for 5 seconds after a 10-second countdown. This feature helps verify functionality before filling the hopper.
  • Filling the Hopper: The feeder should not be filled until all connections are confirmed. Once ready, the lid slides open for filling with corn and then latches securely.
  • Solar Panel Adjustment: The orange knobs on the solar panel allow for adjustment of its angle to optimize sun exposure, ideally facing South/Southwest in most U.S. states.
  • Feed Level Monitoring: A sight window is included to help users monitor the feed level in the hopper, indicating when a refill is needed.
  • Connectivity: The timer connects to the wiring harness using an "elbow" DIN connector and to the motor using a "trailer" connector. The timer also connects to the solar panel via male and female "piggy-back" connectors.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Service: The feeder should be serviced at least once a year. This includes inspecting the motor, timer, solar panel, battery, and all electrical connections.
  • Bolt Tightening: All bolts should be re-tightened periodically to ensure they are snug.
  • Hopper Cleaning: Regular cleaning of the hopper is recommended to prevent caking and clogging due to feed dust.
  • Warranty Support: For warranty claims or technical assistance, users can contact info@judgefeeders.com or call 512.910.2277. Full warranty details are available on judgefeeders.com.
  • Troubleshooting: If the motor does not spin during a test, users should re-check all connections, ensure the battery is sufficiently charged, or try a new battery. A bad or weak battery is a common cause for non-operation.
