Overview

This document provides a comprehensive guide for the installation, usage, and maintenance of the Dobinsons Bullbar, specifically designed for the Toyota Landcruiser 80 Series. The bullbar is identified by part numbers BU59-3518 and BU59-3668.

Function Description

The Dobinsons Bullbar serves as a protective accessory for the front of the Toyota Landcruiser 80 Series. Its primary functions include:

  • Front-end Protection: Shields the vehicle's front from impacts, particularly in off-road conditions or collisions with animals.
  • Accessory Mounting: Provides a robust platform for mounting additional accessories such as winches, driving lights, and fog lights, enhancing the vehicle's utility and safety.
  • Aesthetic Enhancement: Contributes to the rugged and capable appearance of the vehicle.

Important Technical Specifications

The bullbar is designed for the Toyota Landcruiser 80 Series. Key technical aspects include:

  • Part Numbers: BU59-3518 and BU59-3668.
  • Installation Time: Approximately 2 hours.
  • Materials: The top loops of the Stainless Loop Deluxe steel bullbar models are manufactured from high-quality 304-grade stainless steel, which is then highly polished to achieve a high gloss finish.
  • Mounting Hardware: Includes various bolts, nuts, washers, and brackets (e.g., chassis bracket, square washers, spring washers, nut M12 x 1.50, bolt M6 x 1.0, bolt M12 x 1.25, bolt M12 x 1.50, bolt M10 x 1.25).
  • Lighting: Supports the installation of fog lights and indicator/parker lights. Wiring diagrams are provided for two types of light configurations (Type 1: Yellow, Black White from light and connector; Type 2: Yellow, White, Brown from light, Black, White, Red from connector).
  • Winch Compatibility: Designed to integrate with a winch, with specific instructions for mounting and wiring.
  • Under Bar Protection Kit: Includes a kit for under-bar protection.

Usage Features

The Dobinsons Bullbar offers several usage features, particularly when integrated with other accessories:

  • Winch Integration: The bullbar is designed to accommodate a winch, with a dedicated mounting frame. Users can test fit the winch, rotate the clutch handle and gearbox housing for easy access, and determine the control box location. The manual details how to route winch wires and the breather hose.
  • Driving Light Installation: Driving lights can be easily installed on the bullbar, with recommendations to install them before fully fitting the bullbar.
  • Fog Light Functionality: The bullbar supports fog lights, which can be connected using either original vehicle fog light wires or a supplied wiring loom if the vehicle is not OEM fog light equipped. Fog lights are designed to provide a yellow light for clear fog vision, utilizing Halogen bulbs that generate heat, which may cause condensation inside the fog light lens. Sealing the lens is an option, but the breather must not be sealed.
  • Indicator/Parker Lights: The bullbar includes provisions for indicator and parker lights, with detailed wiring instructions to connect them to the vehicle's existing wiring.
  • Under Bar Protection: An under-bar protection kit is included to further safeguard the vehicle's underside.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is crucial for ensuring the longevity and appearance of the Dobinsons Bullbar, especially for stainless steel models:

  • Regular Cleaning: The bullbar should be washed and cleaned regularly to prevent the buildup of dirt and contaminants that can degrade the surface finish. This is particularly important in coastal and high-dust areas. Regular car cleaning items like a soft sponge, car wash, and chamois are recommended, while strong cleaning chemicals should be avoided.
  • Fastener Checks: Mounting fasteners on the bullbar should be checked after the first 1000 km of use to ensure they remain tight.
  • Winch Servicing: If a winch is installed, its servicing and care should be carried out according to the winch instruction manual.
  • Stainless Loop Maintenance (Deluxe Models Only):
    • Stain Removal and Restoration: Over time, weathering can cause staining on the highly polished stainless steel loops. These stains can be removed, and the high gloss finish restored, using specific polishing methods.
    • Tools Required: An electric buffer or drill (cordless drill is more convenient), polishing compound (available from Dobinsons Spring and Suspension), and a soft, finishing-type buffing wheel (e.g., Calico loose leaf style) are needed. It is crucial to avoid using metal or harsh buffing pads and rough cutting type wheels.
    • Polishing Method:
      1. The stainless loops can be removed from the bullbar for easier work, though it's not necessary with a cordless drill.
      2. Ensure loops are clean and dry.
      3. Fit the polishing buff wheel to the drill, observing maximum wheel speed and rotation direction.
      4. Apply a small amount of polishing compound to the rotating buff wheel for a few seconds, avoiding over-dressing.
      5. Gently buff the work area with light pressure, moving back and forth.
      6. After polishing, use a soft, clean, dry rag to clean the surface and inspect for an even finish.
      7. Finally, clean thoroughly with a sponge and warm water.
  • Headlight Adjustment: Customers should be informed that headlight adjustment may be required due to changes in ride height after bullbar installation.
  • Handling Characteristics: Users should be aware that the vehicle's handling characteristics may change after the bullbar is fitted.
